  • All you need to know about extracting oil seed rape honey. If it does crystallise in the frames you will need to put it into a warming cabinet to melt it out from the wax, this is only as a last resort.

    when do you remove it by when the osr flowers go or before. or is it just a case of before its completely capped

    • @johnbeemansaunders6567
      @johnbeemansaunders6567  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark , Normally before the Oil seed, rape, flowers goes Near the end of flowering, but check each week, looking to see if you can shake any nectar out of the frames, once the nectar does not shake out, you can then remove it, good to test with a r refractometer, but not necessary, if you get it right , happy Beekeeping from John

    Once extracted OSR seems to set like concrete after a while, do you cream the honey before placing it in jars?

    • @johnbeemansaunders6567
      @johnbeemansaunders6567  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I don’t cream it, but I do very gently warm it if it goes solid, often my friends and family eat it well before then . Also some people like it a bit crystallised on their toast me too , very good question though, I find creaming honey A bit of a workup , john .

  • @normanwells2755
    @normanwells2755 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Where we live in Alberta a lot of canola is grown. It is the same as what you refer to as OSR but here it is seeded in the spring, by May 10, flowers from about end of June until heat knocks off the flowers in early August. Crystallization is not an issue if you get after it because you should be able to choose a hot day, like >80. I believe your OSR is mostly fall seeded, resumes growth in about mid March, and it might still be cool during the flowering period so crystallization may be more of an issue for you than us? Would you agree?

    • @johnbeemansaunders6567
      @johnbeemansaunders6567  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Norman, I do agree with all you have commented, our OSR often will Crystallises in the jar after one month, our OSR has a lot of Glucose that influences crystallisation, I have had this crystallise in my supers once , I really like the flavour of this honey though, great to hear from you, John.

    Hi John enjoy your videos always learn something. Where did you get your extractor and honey roller would imagine this roller would be good for heather honey. Stay safe and well. Andrew

      Hi Andrew, I managed to buy this one from eBay £105 delivered good for the money, but you git what you pay for in the long run ,I also bought my roller from eBay, I have no experience with heather honey I do believe some beekeepers use a honey 🍯 press for this, I always reply to my comments and sometimes I get mixed up with who’s who, I don’t think you have commented before , forgive me if I’m wrong. As I’m getting older I’m getting more mixed up sorry, anyway happy beekeeping to you and your family keep well John

    Ive seen rapeseed honey for sale online, and most times it looks pure white and like set honey, but one company called vivi bee is selling a rapeseed honey that is clear yellow and looks runny. What colour should it be when its in the jar?

    • @johnbeemansaunders6567
      @johnbeemansaunders6567  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can only say that mine is always Light cream colour until it crystallises and then it is white
      . I don’t do anything to my honey it’s just natural, John

    Beautiful golden goodness 🙃, can I ask what measurement the frame holder is in the spinner? The bit where you had 2 super frames next to each other?

    Hi John thanks for the video, but can you tell me as I don't understand the need for a best sell by date on honey, as honey will last for years and years. Thanks Michael.

    • @johnbeemansaunders6567
      @johnbeemansaunders6567  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      michael flaherty hello I think you'll find it is not a best sell by date but best before date so it is still okay to eat as it would need to say don't eat past this date as honey crystallises goes quite hard and white it is still okay to eat but has gone past best before date basically I think it is a legal binding part of the label we need to put on for selling A food product such as honey I also believe they found it in one of the pharaohs tomb so I don't know the full answer but I hope I have helped in some way best advice look on the web for legal binding information for the honey label please let me know if you find out anything information that would help me and others in the future regards John

      Hi John
      On searching the internet about the best before date I came across this web site,
      www.benefits-of-honey.com/honey-expiration.html
      Which seem to explain reason for it.
      Thanks Michael

    Am a bee keeper and I never hear of honey crystallizing. I know sugar does that so if you feed your bees sugar water then sugar will be in your honey that's why it crystallize. If an wrong please let me know

    • @johnbeemansaunders6567
      @johnbeemansaunders6567  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      rena rich Hi thanks for your comments honey can crystallise without feeding sugar as it is to do with the nectar they collect oilseed rape has a lot of fructose in it which crystallises quick also Ivy can crystallise you may live in an area where there are none of these crops hope that's helpful happy beekeeping to you John

    Good video ive got the same extractor, have just got a new out apiary with rape fields all around for next year, does it set in the jars quicker? Was wondering whether I should try creamed honey? Any experience with that?

    • @johnbeemansaunders6567
      @johnbeemansaunders6567  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry i have no experience with creamed honey, i know you need seed honey to do it. I have looked into it but as i have jarred oil seed rape in the past and although it crystallises quicker than normal honey its never been spoon bending honey just very thick with big crystals.
      All the people i sell it to have been very happy with it and some prefer it to runny honey. Happy bee keeping, hope all goes well. Any more questions let me know. :)

    The honey sieve is not a filter. That's important. The strainer's lower sieve is rated for 200 microns. That means pollen goes thru it and you can call your honey "raw unfiltered" as long as you don't heat it.
