$500 for a 7 bay NAS? That is a pretty dang good deal considering the price of other available options on the market with similar specs, can’t wait to get my hands on one
I would really like to see this offer at least an option for NFS and/or iSCSI in addition to SMB. I don’t need to have it running docker containers for me, but it sure would be nice to be able to easily attach storage on the NAS to a proxmox server or something similar. The price point seems very reasonable though.
If your desire is strong enough, at least in the meantime, you could also use an intermediary VM that does that for you with “s3fs” or “mountpoint for s3”, then connect to that over smb
I'd buy it right now if it had the ability to use a separate partition or volume as an NVR target for Unifi Protect. Heck, I'd settle for the Dream Machine to do this in reverse by allowing network storage from that device.
Holy shit, $500? That cant be right? Unifi usually comes with the ecosystem/brand tax but this seems like a pretty solid deal compared to something like the Synology RS422+. Seems like slightly more limited software but for a storage device thats awesome.
500 bucks isn't that bad either if you just want a rackmount NAS that stores stuff. Would have liked to see it run something like Dockers but I can understand why they didn't go with it.
True, but they are competing with every NAS manufacturer which does this. It's all about software features. I think the argument here is that it is a modular solution and you would run a server separately.
I'm actually happy that it doesn't do the docker container thing. Doing this would cost a bunch more money because you need a better CPU. It opens up a very complex set of trade-offs that undermine the nature of a relatively simple NAS. If corporate users want to run a Docker container, they can get the rack mount server that sits alongside this rack mount NAS. If home users want to do such a thing, they will run proxmox on some old piece of hardware they have laying around. In both cases "more CPU in the NAS" is not what buyers want
So many questions :). How does redundancy work for mixed drive sizes? So if you have 6 5TB drives & 1 2TB drives do you simply get 2*7=14TB or can it do something similar to SHR on synology? Have you heard if they are going to add NFS or iSCSI? I'd say price is pretty attractive if it works well.
No hybrid handling at this stage. Apparently it will only see the smallest capacity across all drives. So an 8tb drive will only been seen as 4tb if that’s what the rest of the drives are.
Any idea what happens if you put in multiple drive sizes? Also, it would be awesome if you could split part of the nas off to act as nvr storage, maybe in the future.
I wasnt planning on spending $500 tonight but this is perfect timing. I love my r720 but dont have virtualization needs anymore and it contributes to 60% of my energy costs
The product seems really nice. One feature I would love to see them add pertains to remote access of files. Right now this is accomplished via a web page (which quickly becomes a tedious process for teams accessing groups of files, the steps being download, edit, save, upload for each file). I would love to see a dropbox-like client (for the various flavors of OS) which automatically syncs selected folders to a computer. This would make accessing & editing files remotely much more efficient.
Definitely a great product for the majority of NAS users I hoped to build a multipurpose VM - NAS device, but the pricing here makes me consider splitting off the NAS functionality! I can do both for the price of one unit I was planning to build! I have grown into the UNI culture regardless of the shortcomings. Support is sketchy, but it just takes a bit longer to figure it out!
As far as a turn-key device I think it's a decent fit for most likely SOHO needs if all you need is a NAS with file storage and security options. Although I'm surprised that they didn't put at least a 2.5g RJ45 on there. The price point is fairly decent, though even given the lack of any kind of additional app support. Also I'd really like to see them expand their backup destination options. No S3? C'mon man.
Really nice first step into the space, hopefully they beef up the line over time but definitely hits the basics at a reasonably competitive price point. It'll make a nice enough small business nas, little more (at least NFS please) for tinkery home labbers needed but really not a bad start. Not sure on the expansion situation which is my main other question but still, good start for sure
499 sounds ok, but it's without any drives i assume. The question then is, will it require you to buy the drives from Unify itself, or can you buy those anywhere? If it's indeed 250 for an 8 TB drive (as shown in 0:25) it's going to cost 1500 in total for 4 drives.
i have deployed several udm i do know it likes to not recognize the drives unless they are formatted exfat so this should recognize other drives just fine
Hi there, thanks for the video. I am looking to see the following: 1. iPhone and Android Applications to backup the pictures from the phone into the UNAS. 2. something similar to google documents to create office documents directly on the UNAS. 3. backup up one entire windows computer to the UNAS, similar to synology backup for business. .
It kinda takes up a lot of space for just 7 drives. I get that they want it to fit into a rack nicely, but I'd rather just have a small box rest of top of one of my other wrack items and save the space. Though their solution would provide a much cleaner look.
Now that this item is released Im wondering whether I should still stick to getting the Synology DS1522+ as a SOLO videographer and editor using 10TB per year?
@@bossman762x39 Yeah and lack of features, some probably will missing from this compered to other NAS software solutions like forever. Bonkers that they dared to release this in 2024, I would die in embarrassment.

That's like Apple selling current gen, full featured iPhone for $500. There's GOTTA be a catch! Ya gotta sign over your first-born, right? ... RI-IIIIIIGHT?!
No, the catch is that this device is a joke if you try to compare its capabilities to other NAS software in 2024. Waste of resources. Only recommended to early adapter beta tester blind fans.
This is made for small businesses who don't have a skilled IT person, as a full time IT admin I am going to stick to Windows Server with DFS, and TrueNAS.
The price isn't bad considering its rack mounted and 7 bays, but when you start comparing it to other nas products the waters start to get a little muddy. It can only do file sharing via samba, that is extremely limited and most people considering a nas would probably enjoy some additional features. Basically you'll need something else to pair along side this which makes the lower price less of a deal. I'm sure it will be useful for some people though. It is just hard to justify over the likes of someone like Synology that gives you camera support and solid PC backup options and photo backup for around the same price and would be more useful for a home user. And if you start moving towards business use Synology still has a strong case, or there is the deploy your own with the likes of truenas or unraid.
Just looked at the specs it had a quad core arm processor from 2021. You could get an N100 board for like 200 bucks that would smoke that. Those chips could be fine in a switch or router for those basic functions but if you want a nas for media streaming and everything I gotta say it sucks
I'm sure Unifi did a great job with the software. Is there documentation that outlined the underlying filesystem being used? Personally I prefer to struggle so this is not the product for me 😊 The Unifi ecosystem is just too Apple-ish for my liking
you cannot run anything on this. This one of the most bogged down sub basic solution that I have ever seen in 2024. This can only do SMB thats it. 10G SFP+ works well if you already have a Dream Machine, which this seems to play into the ecosystem rather than sold as a stand-alone device.
