      First batch learning mistakes:
      1st fermentation 10 days (not enough) it is too cold in our house and scoby likes it when hotter.
      2e fermentation, poured 1/3 cup of juice in 500ml bottle (was too much juice) let it sit for 4 days and didn’t screw the lid tight enough so there is not much sparkling in bottles.
      Result, kombucha is sweet but very good and we see small scoby’s on top every bottles !
      Next will be 1/8 cup juice in 500ml bottle :). Can’t wait to try, we are day 9 of 1st fermentation today :).

I also did Raspberry and now just started 10 bottles of Guava that was my Fav GT flavor... good luck it’s really rather easy I just received the flip top bottles I ordered from Amazon and they are great I just started a new batch lol

      I suggest buying a kit on Amazon for like $30 if you’ve never made it before, because the process is so dang simple and you have everything you need. But sourcing all your stuff separately is fine too. The first time I made it I was so terrified of infecting my batch. Now? Lol I just yank scobys out of jars and always brew five gallons at one time. It’s not nearly as scary as it can seem. Within a month of making my first gallon I’d upscale to two. Then three. Then four. Now five. 😂

    Such a great video, I also love the Naked mango drink for the Kombucha! I have to say another way to grow a scoby which I have done was to buy a bottle of Kombucha. I used GT's Origninal Kombucha. I assume this works best with any non flavored kombucha. I poured the bottle in the mason jar, put a small rag on top of it with a rubber band. Let it sit for 4 - 5 weeks and I'm good to go with a new Scoby!.

    I've been making mine for about four months (grew my own scoby using plain kombucha) and love it. Have tried flavouring my second fermentation with passion fruit, sultanas, frozen blueberries (favourite) and vanilla with brown sugar for a cream soda flavour (new favourite). I use black tea (English Breakfast). Haven't tried using green tea as I prefer the black tea flavour. Can't believe how easy it is to make and how delicious it is to drink.

    Very well done! I first started making k 30-some years ago (not continuous). The instructions I received came from the lady who brought it from China included boiling all the water AND the sugar to eliminate 'bad things'. I don't have a fridge that filters water. It takes a little longer since the water has to cool but I remove it from the stove, put a lid on, and wait. Break time. I also thoroughly clean the jars. If you find the k is little strong for you, you can change to part green tea, but slowly introduce the green tea. Instructions said six black tea bags per gallon (I now use Newman's Own Organic black tea which is stronger than, say, Lipton's) but changed three of the black for three green. I now am going to try stage two!

      Hey! I got my scoby and kumbucha starter a week ago and i would like to ask you for some help. I searched everything i could find online, studied how it's made, got myself all ingreedients (scoby, kombucha starter, organic black tea, a big mason jar and unrefined cane sugar) and i strictly followed every tip i could find. My scoby sank imidiatelly and it doesn't seem to do anything, there are no bubbles and from the looks itself could be dead? I'm already making water and milk kefir for quite some time now and i'm doing quite well to keep little budies happy and healthy, so idk what i'm doing wrong with Kombucha... Here are some pictures if you can tell me something more. I would surely
      be grateful for it! :)

    Hey man, I followed your guide and the results so far have been amazing. Yesterday I bottled it for second fermentation. One question though - through the first fermentation a new scoby formed on top, then sunk to the bottom and a new, third one formed on top again. Is this a common occurrence?

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes that can happen. Perhaps your pantry experienced some temperature changes that caused it to sink. If your brew is healthy it will continue to form that layer on top.

  • @flowerchild777
    @flowerchild777 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    When you went through the process of starting your own scobie, you added some kombucha and sweet black tea and covered it, set aside for 4-5 weeks... when do you have to add more sugar/tea? Or do you just keep switching out the sweet tea and transfer the "slime/scobie to the new tea, to let it grow? Thank you so much for your time and expertise.

    • @jargon113
      @jargon113 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no exact answer for this. Basically it depends on the size of the scoby. You can taste the brew that it is in, if it is very vinegary, then dump it and add fresh brewed sweet black tea. Generally it's 1-2 cups per scoby in a motel. A single scoby should be fine for 1 month at room temp, but I would give it fresh brew at least every month. With a motel (typically 4-8 scobys together) they can go through the tea in a week or two.

    Thank you very much! I made my first batch on someone else's video too and it was pretty much same recipe but I was intimidated by the second fermentation idea and this made it really straightforward. Since I love bubbly kombucha and can't drink caffeine hardly at all, the second ferment is really essential for me, and now it will be easy. Also, none of the other videos I've seen mentioned the light sensitivity and mine are sitting on top of my fridge in front of God and everybody in the Texas summer. I do have those filtered windows so it will be interesting to see if the bacteria have done well this week given that, or if not. If not, I'll know I just need to put them into a cabinet and I'll know I didn't fail. Hurray!

  • @daksmom1999
    @daksmom1999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Your video is the first one I think I understand about how to make kombucha. But, I'm still confused on one thing....in order to get a SCOBY, I have to buy a bottle of kombucha to add to the tea I make, is that correct? I want to do this entire process, so I don't want to buy a SCOBY. Then, if I like the kombucha, and I want to make more, when I make more batches, do I always have to add kombucha, either from the kombucha I bought at the store, or the from the first fermentation of the first batch I made? Also, I don't like tea without a little bit of sweetness, so, after the second fermentation, is it ok to sweeten the tea, or will that partially kill the health effects of the kombucha?

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes you will add some kombucha to every batch. This adds the beneficial bacteria and yeast to get the cycle started again. You will add store bought to the first cycle, then your own from then forward. You can add sugar if you like. Many people try to cut sugar out so the Kombucha is a nice drink for them since there is very little sugar left in the finished product.

    Nice presentation. As a society, too many have lost what I refer to as “pioneering skills”. If I sent kids to the store to get all the things I need to make noodles, then they would never come back home, because they do not know anything about food. Around 1900, companies hooked into the idea of selling convenience to the public. To the point that grocery stores are no more than restaurants who call themselves grocery stores. I have canned so many things and brewed so many things that I know you are in for a lot of fun because the variety is amazing. I have subscribed and look forward to more of your demonstrations...
