Almost a year to the day since I received my MRX740 (pre ordered January 2021). I Didnt expect it sound so much better than my Marantz sr7015 for not much more. 2ch Music is a close comparison using the internal amps. But Using the pre amps with my Outlaw 7000x, i notice more power, and a cleaner, more dynamic audio presentation from The Anthem. On movies; the dynamics, fidelity and Nuance in the effects processing is the most noticeable upgrade. The same dolby atmos movies are a different experience with the Anthem vs the Marantz. Most native 5.1 content upmixes convincing well to 7.1+ using dolby or DTS NeurX. 7.1 content typically upmixes very well to 7.1.4. Most 5.1 upmixed to 7.1+ presentations scale so well i was convinced it was a native audio presentation. I did not have the same experience with the Marantz using the same settings with the same content. I thought i would really miss the Auro upmixer and the other DSP options, but the trade off is Better overall multi-channnel audio presentation with just the main Dolby and DTS NeurX. Im convinced this is a PROCESSOR, not a Receiver. and ARC is on another level entirely. I only wish it had independent sub outputs. Mini Dsp is in my future.
Love my Anthem AVM70. The web UI, control, and setup is stellar. Along with the ARC software too. Still some bugs to squash, but the unit and this line has huge potential. Waiting for the HDMI 2.1 upgrade as well.
YESS!! best thing to wake up to! Thank you very much for getting Anthem products tested and reviewed! Being from Canada 🇨🇦 means we have limited options for AVR’s unless you want to pay an exorbitant amount to ship across the border. Can’t wait to hear how it tested on your AP and what it sounded like in your room.
Great overview Gene! Looking forward to the bench test results and ARC assessment. Would love to get your opinion on ARC vs. Dirac, maybe in a future video?
Thanks for the video. I have just ordered the MRX 740 and am waiting for delivery. This video is a good primer for when I setup the unit and I will most likely be referencing it again.
Glad to see you have this and put it to the test. I have owned this right before there was even a firmware that would work with ARC. Can't wait to see more! Love to see that you went straight for beta updates too!
This AVR is amazing. I moved over to this from a Denon and am so happy with the switch. Still need to fine tune things so I can't wait for your future videos to help!
Great video Gene! I've been an AVM70 owner since they first hit in January 2021 and have continually been impressed with Anthem's sound presentation. ARC should be getting it's auto phase update soon for these units.
How difficult is it to match the phase/time alignment of mains and subs, especially when using LFE+Main setting? Can you still get balanced bass even when your mains are rolling off?
Looking forward to your measurement review. particularly for the pre-amp section. Connected to my Outlaw 7000x for base 7ch, the audio dynamics and fidelity is noticably better than my marantz sr7015 (preout), (though they are similar in performance using internal amps for 2ch music). Thanks Gene and Audioholics family.
Proud owner of AVM70, I like the unit, the sound is fantastic, it replace INTEGRA 80.2 so well. Running version 157 of the software, sometime when I just started the unit when I change input, the display of the change goes strange with bizarre « EGYPTIEN » characters, it is resolved after shutting down and reopening the AVM.
I had pioneer before and went to a anthem mrx 510 (I use as a pre amp) 3 years ago a older model with arc genesis. It's the most intuitive software I ever used, and what I love most about anthem? Is that they care about the 2.0 channel guys too. Very easy to seperate ht from 2 channel .. Love them

I’ve had the MRX740 since launch and have been looking forward to your measurements. One thing I find odd but maybe not a lot of people have this configuration; I run a 3.0.2 setup since I move frequently in apartments. I cannot assign the more powerful Surround amp for the Front Dolby speakers. Probably doesn’t matter for that class or loudspeaker but it seems odd that I have to use the weaker amps for those while the more powerful surround amps are disconnected. I haven’t touched ARC so I’m looking for your guide on that. It hasn’t seen an update since last summer though and back then users on the forums were reporting that reference levels were being set incorrectly when applying ARC. I think it was setting the loudness to 85 dB at the listening position for reference (0 dB volume) instead of 75 dB. Although that’s one of the gaps in my knowledge so perhaps you can make it a point in your ARC guide to explain reference mastering levels if you find any discrepancies. And again as I mentioned in your unboxing, ARC does not measure speaker distances. I’ve argued on the forum that this is really the most accurate way to measure the channel delay so I don’t see why ARC doesn’t do it like most other brands, e.g Audessey.

Yes, same interface with a couple different features in the AVM 70.
How bad is the 12db/oct crossover in practice? For example compared to Denon's asymmetric 24db/oct for the sub and 12db/oct for the speakers?
Not horrible but they should do a 4th order on the sub. They are working on FW update.
@@Audioholics Any idea if that will apply to the 520/720/1120 too? Do they have the same calibration system or are there differences?
Have the AVM 70 also. Very basic, ugly Chinese looking. But i like it. Marantz looks nice and elegant. Have problems hearing the low end EQ 60-500 on the Anthem. First time have i ever had to add two subs. Now it has very low, great mid and upper but nothing on the bottom supporting the vocals/music. Spent $11K now and i was just as happy with my 1K setup or happier. Ran ARC, don't have acoustic treatments made yet. Super Subs on, Front Cross 80, LFE 120. BW 702's, 2- SVS sb 100. My room is 15x29 (not ideal) Hard wood floors, and all the good bass ends up at the walls where i'm not and if you go to the walls you loose the sweet spot of all the rest of the frequencies. Anyone??
How do you set the speakers to Small or Large like you are saying?
@@brownstone43 You don't. You can turn off the crossover, but the words Large/Small aren't in Anthem.
Update this again with the new version.
You do realise any you do in web ui doesn’t apply they must be done in arc program did you do a arc ?
If you notice on his home screen ARC upload say's N/A so it's not engaged.
@@jasonc331 Haven't run ARC yet.
@@jasonc331 well he has no clue anthem amps do not sound good at all with out arc loaded and once arc is loaded all the sub stuff he was on about is pointless must be done through arc and do not use that super sub fronts
@@Samzep I'm just 100% Happy with the way he is going about it, He's testing the units functioning out of the box. First time we will get to the see them on a AudioPresion. You know he's going to try to find any bugs ( and we know there are some) Then he will load ARC and give us more. To me this is a win win for all of us that own the units as this will get firmware updates out, because they aren't going to want any bad press that they can correct! Thanks Gene!
@@Audioholics I know, I was explainninng how they can tell. when the ARC upload date say N/A ,when you do it puts the date and the Name you choose inside the ARC app.
I just want to say I purchase the 1140 and you cant assign the heights 1 and 2 to anything but a hieght 3. The 1140 is worthless I am so mad I brought this amp I wanted the heights to have the 140watts perchannel but you cant I am so mad I should have stayed with Marantz. I called Anthem and they maybe one day they would code it to work can you believe that no wonder they knocked down the price almost 500 off. Product sucks and fan makes noise. If you dont have a salamander or rack you will get your gun and shoot it.
Low quality Product and low reability , good luck
