When I did my amp some years ago it had the mica insulators. They were still the original ones as the outputs had never been touched. I only replaced the outputs just to freshen it up.
I did a Kenwood that was 50 pounds, Lazy Suzan is the only way to do it. Audiokarma is my main source of information and MFT has great parts lists that I can believe in.
Hi Pat - Great video! Do you have a wiring diagram that you can provide for testing the preamp section shown in your video? I'd like to test my 1050 as I am updating it. Thanks
Hello Pat! As an vintage audio enthusiast I appreciate your videos and helpful knowledge. Could you please include a part replacement list that you came up with? Again thank you for your time!
Thanks for your comment. I get most of my information from audiokarma. Many of the guys there know these stereos inside and out. On many models there will be a complete parts list. I have notice that on some Pioneers they will replace every transistor. I look at the video of the 737 you did. Looks great and I'm sure that it sounded great.
Wonderful job, well done. I do some restorations now and again myself. Never had a Pioneer on the bench though. I just wonder why you replace all transistors, are they really out of spec?
Thanks. This receiver was most likely driven hard in its day. The amp board ran hot and one of the output transistors had a very low HFE. Other transistors were known to be a problem. There is a wealth of information on Pioneers in audiokarma.org.
Pat, love your video. I bought a sx 1050 along with a pair of Klipsch Heresy speakers right out of college in Jan 1977. The receiver had intermittent sound issues at about 10 years old. Over the years, I've had repair guys try to fix it on numerous occasions. The repairs never took. It's well taken care of and mostly boxed up in a closet most of the last 25 years. I still love it and want someone to resurrect it. Would you be interested in taking on another project? I'm in south Alabama and will pay whatever it takes.
Thanks Mark, My goal is to get to a point where I can take in customers equipment but I am not there yet. I will suggest going to Audiokarma.org. and ask around there. This is where I go to get my information, they know their stuff and won't do you wrong. There is a section just for Pioneers. The SX-1050 is well worth getting fixed.
Go to audiokarma.org in the pioneer section, you will find a parts list and all of the advice that you would need. The people there are great and know their stereos. I couldn't have done this without their help.
Hi I just want to mention that I really enjoy your channel. I just pick up the SX 780 unit from yard sale. The unit was dirty but has power on it. I have a question, the balance knob is not working. It is just not responding well. There is no in between, when I turn the knob. It goes on and off like a switch. It should change the output gradually but it is not. I also noticed that the right channel VU meter is slightly weaker than left channel. I do not have equipment to test it out, like pro, but I notice slight different in the sound, when I put head phone. Do you think it is issue with balance knob or just Vu meter? If you have any suggestion or tool that I can use like multi-meter (to check the output) Please let me know. TY.
Thanks mkmeggy2, I have solved a lot of problems by just cleaning the controls with DeoxIT. There are lots of videos showing how to do this. The signal will pass through just about every switch and knob so anyone can be a problem. Be safe when opening up your stereo, unplug it.
Just a rough estimate if you haven't answered this before but approximately how much a rough estimate does it cost to recap a 1050 like you did sir?? Thanks
Thanks for watching my video. The two big filter caps ran about $30 each. The eight output transistors were about $5.50 each. The rest of the caps, transistors and diodes were most likely less then $75. I have no idea how much labor someone would charge.
A little DeoxIT may fix it. The problem is that on this unit all of the controls are hard to get to to clean. With the power off you could work all of the controls back and forth, sometimes this will help remove the dirt which is inside of them.
I have been following you for quite a while now and I know the quality of work do you its more than impressive, congratulations. What I'm primarily interested in is a Marantz 2270 or similar to the last Marantz you did , when you find one and do the magic that you do I WILL buy it all you have to do is contact me and it's a done deal. as far as this Pioneer is concerned I had a mid seventies Pioneer 939 that I remember fondly but I don't really feel like getting into a bidding war.on Craigslist. I'm in no hurry because I want something of the high quality work that you do so again please remember me and let me know the next time you have something of that ilk thanks again Patrick and sorry to be bugging you
It's good how you emphasise the use of the DBT.
Very important.
Even after the DBT I did have a output transistor short out on me. Not to sure on those silicone insulators. May not use them again.

The Lazy Suzan is a great help. Reminds me of the Guru MTF's advice when attempting to repair the heavy Monster amps.

Hey. Very nice work and great video!
Thanks, I couldn't have done it without the help of the guys on audiokarma.org. A great group of people that really knows their stereos.
Great job on the Pioneer!Good video very interesting and informative.Wish I knew a lot about electronics I am learning though.Cheers
What is the square wave used for? doesn't the sine wave do the same?

You went to town on this one
Thanks, this was one of my first ones that I did. I used AudioKarma on every step.

@@patrickoconnell3896 Thank you so much,Well I really enjoyed your video very interesting great job also👍👍👍
I have pioneer sx-1050. A channel fades out. When I lightly tap any of the controls it works again. Is this a easy repair. Is it a dirty connection

pat im interested in the Pioneer 1050 if you could get back to me and let me know if you're interested in selling it thanks Larry
+Larry Brown Thanks Larry, it is on Ebay right now. I am patraoc on ebay.
