Correction: I think the new 3DS had a 2nd thumb stick added (you could also get a "bolt on" one for the original 3DS) - so the 2DS is lacking that 2nd stick!
when charging the old 2DS model, is it normal when full charged the AC LED indicator stay red? Or was it suppose to stay blue when full charge? I don't know if my 2DS broke or not..
I love the 2DS, mainly because I thought the 3DS "3-D" was gimmicky. I understand some folks like it, but I wasn't into it. The cost-reduced version (the 2DS) is a great alternative. It fits better in my hands too. :) Great video and well done as usual. :)
Thanks =D I get that, I can understand some people just dont like the 3D. It is a bit gimmicky but it does blow me away lol (I am easily impressed lol).
Finally got around to trying to repair my daughter’s 2DS, but no luck. I feel more confident disassembling the unit, and it definitely needs a new port. The symptoms are similar, but no amount of wiggle, or adjusting the clamp works. For now I will have to look into replacing the port, and keep swapping out batteries.
It's possible that the connector took a knock, and it broke the pad or trace where the connector is soldered on. It may need the connector removing, pads and traces there inspecting and patching if required.
The thing I love about your videos is you keep the pains in the arse parts where things get fiddly, don't work right, or things like springs go wonky, etc. In short, you're a mortal like me. 😊
Nice video Chris, never knew about the little SD card fix and I liked the tip on the counter clockwise screw click (going to use that one). Cheers, Vince :-)
Just repaired my New 2DS XL that was not powering on/ not charging. After opening it up I noticed some corrosion near the power button's solder points which aren't too far from the battery. I remember seeing a small amount of liquid on the bottom of my device, but did not imagine any had actually went through. Gave the board and the components near the corrosion a good cleaning and it started charging again.
Great video! Weird how you post this after i recently bumped my power connector pretty hard and I have the same issue. I've taken it apart before to hardmod it, did all that work and never got around to getting the correct media card reader for the pc to finish modding. So I have to go back into it, put it back to normal, then check the power connector. Keep up the great work!
Great video as always. Shoulder buttons seem to be the most annoying to deal with as it's often hard to get them lined up long enough to put a device back together. And I both love and hate the way those ribbon connectors work. They're easy to get open and I much prefer the way they work to the old fashioned type, but they're annoying when it comes to re-inserting the ribbon. Anyway, I don't know squat about portables so I was really surprised to see how good the screen looks and Luigi's Mansion looks fantastic on that!
Ah yes! the 2DS / 3DS /XL / chapters, a great deal of patients is required on these handhelds, the hardest for me would be the 3DS standard. Those black clips are an absolute nightmare a few decided to separate ( snap) there is no known way to fix when that happens that's economically viable. The method i used with them clips is to slowly using your finger move to closed position then apply a small bit of pressure until you feel it click . Another common fault with the power connector would be the plastic melting if your soldering tip was near the socket for too long. Great job on this cleanup.. i wouldn't bother replacing that power socket it would be more trouble than its worth :) THUMBS UP!
I haven't fully watched the video, but here's a question: My old 2DS's SD card slot doesn't work, and when the SD card was in the slot, (Btw, I chewed on it a lot as a kid because I didn't know what it was and I was trying to get it out and stuff) it just slowed down my 2DS, but no software or games showed up. I know that the SD card still works cus' I've put it in my laptop and inspected the folders. Why is it doing this? When I insert a new SD card, it either says write protected or no SD card inserted. Please help!!! :( Edit: And my stylus is stuck in the hole now. Great. Please respond quick :(
You probably need to replace the SD card slot tbh! The write protection problem will related to the switch being bent / damage inside the slot, and the fact it doesnt read the card probably means some of the pins that marry up with the SD card contacts are bent or broken.
I did homebrew my 2ds xl(not the one that requires the sd card to run) and I used raspberry pi imager to formate the 128gb sd card to FAT32 and it worked!
Nice repair. The difference in the two screen sizes is a legacy thing from the original DS/DSi (smaller lower screen), to allow DS games to scale correctly (whilst still giving touch control) and the 3DS (top screen) in which they increased the screen size for improved play for 3DS games. The bottom screen is used on it's own when playing original DS games. The analogue stick was first available on the original 3DS and all subsequent 2/3DS versions but the second right hand analogue nub control was added on the >new< versions of both the 3DSXL and the 2DSXL.
Thanks =D Ah, I didn't know that about the legacy thing! The original 3DS had no analogue stick (mine doesn't), but they did release a "Circle Pad Pro" which I did buy with Resident Evil Revelations. It works really well and I guess that's why they pushed it into the "new new 3DS" models lol.
i'm not sure if theirs a cradle charger for the 2ds but it was the best thing i bought for my 3ds as it cuts down on mechanical wear and tear, eventually i can imagine the hinges will go but atleast it should keep it charged up without risk of damaging the connector so much.

Chris i want to make Ironclad and Ghostlop MVS carts for personal use. I'm stuck selecting what 'speed' to not go over with the EPROMS (120ns 150ns etc....) , what do you suggest ?
I have the same problem with the Sd card, but when I try to move the pin, it just jumps back and I dont know if thats normal, or if I should just get a new one
The 3ds charger is actually a dsi charger orginaly I orginaly had a white dsi and I did lose both white stylus but I got it from Costco America(I am American) it same with red stylus pack and only found one red one then I sold my dsi to half price books(only in America)
Any chance you know what the problem is with a 3ds, when the charging light comes and doesn't blink, acting like it's charging, but then it's NOT charging? I tried a new battery and it didn't work. So the battery isn't the issue either
There could be alsorts of reasons for that really =/ I would start my measuring the battery voltage under charge and follow its connections backwards - that can be super difficult on a board this complex. It's possible there's some damage to the charge circuit.
Would this work for a 2ds that won’t hold a charge? I figured it might be a battery issue but it’s still doing it after I replaced it. It has full charge, but as soon as I unplug it the low battery lights would flash. Plus it also shuts off randomly when I do have it on the charger. Would it be possible to fix it without replacing the port?
It could be a bad power socket, yes! But it could also be a fault with the charge circuit somewhere on the 2DS motherboard. It's also worth trying a different charger, just in case that charger has started to fail.
So my lil brother spilled Gatorade on my 2ds and it soaked thru. I took it apart to air dry for a bit. The charger works but the power button won’t at all could you help
Maybe the gatorade got under the button contacts or inbetween pins on the ICs. You could strip it down carefully and clean the PCB with IPA. Then drive it off again before testing!
I bet someone's caught the charger cable with their foot and ripped it out. I've done that myself a number of times with a tablet until it finally gave up the ghost.
can you make a repair vid on older ds models, like DS/DS lite/DSi/DSi XL because i have a dsi and dsi xl which on the outside look like they are in great condition but wont turn on when pushing the power button, ive tried charging them in case its to do with low battery power but the charging light wont even come on. i havent tinkered with the insides in case id mess something up and make the process of repairing them even more difficult.
