Thanks for sharing this tutorial. After I found it, my daughter used it as part of a college assignment. People like you make the world a better place.
Fantastic! After a long search on Google and trying QGIS (without success) you have finally given me the answer to getting altitudes from Lat/Lon. Many thanks for your video. You are a hero!
Thanks a lot.. I m a professional surveyor and this video is really very helpful at that place where where we need approximate value urgently. Thanks again for this video.
Thank you for the informative and straightforward method. I didn't know how to do this before your video. Maybe a suggestion for an improvement. In GE if you hold your button down to trace the grid, instead of clicking to trace your grid, moving slowly you'll get 10 times the points easily. Continue the path to crosshatch the grid, should get you a very nice tight contour. Maybe the new GE will have a better DEM. Thanks again, Peter K
Hi, thanks for the tutorial. One remark, you can change the language at the right top corner of the software. There is a drawdown button to change the language what you like. Thanks!!!
For TCX converter, you can change the language to English from top right corner button on the screen (drop down menu) saying Dutch. Change it to English.

From the process the elevation data I found for an area ranges from 7 to 23. While the actual data collected from ground ranges from 36 to 60 meters. So is this elevation data reliable !?!?
Thanks for sharing. It was a great video! I noticed that you used Google Earth Pro. Is it possible to do the same procedure in Google Earth (not the Pro)?
+Abdelali Gourfi Hi, Few people have asked this question. That is either problem with the installation or operating system. So try to re install tcx and try. Make sure that internet is connected when you do it. If it still doesn't work, try to do it in different operating system or different computer. Most of the people told it worked after doing this. Hopefully it will work for you as well.
Dear Dr. how can I get the free download software kml to shapefile converter that can help edit the elevations of points? I have downloaded the free KML2SHP converter but could not use it on my window 07. Would you help me reslove this problem/
Thank you very much, you are good man, but i want ask something you what is the resolution of elevation number, you know the free data that available on internet is 30-90m, so this makes me ask another question, what is the difference between this technique and another methods like Socet Set pro (stereo analyst) to generate high resolution dem file 2m by using raw imagery satellite like (geoeye-spot-ikonos).
Hi, The accuracy or the vertical elevation is as accurate as the the google earth. There are certain inbuilt inaccuracies as far as elevation is concerned, so accuracy of your contours or DEM are proportional. Elevation resolution is as good as or better than 1 meter, but the accuracy depends on the accuracy of google earth and your location. As far the the difference is concerned, I feel the DEM extracted by stereo pairs are better with extensive editing while generating DEM. The reasons are obvious.
This was extremely detailed and helpful except for something that is out of your control... TCX Converter is now discontinued and even if you download it from a sketchy download site, it can't seem to update altitude in files anymore, I assume because its source of data has moved since the last release! I'm kinda hosed here I guess. Any idea how to fix that?
after saving your .kml file from google earth, go to www.gpsvisualizer.com/elevation and load the file there. Click "Convert and Add Elevation," and output as a .gpx file. Download the link that it gives you and import that into TCX Converter. Do not update elevation, only export as a .csv file and continue from there, opening in excel.
Hi, Thx. for the TH-cam. I am following your tutorial and getting in TCX Converter in the ALT column a message: " DOOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN"> " in each row. I have Internet connection OK. Any idea ?. Thx.
Things went well until it came time to update the altitude. All the points in the file went from an altitude of 0 to having "ml>" listed. I'm not sure what ml> means.
+ Geospatial tutorials, I tried the same version you used in you tutorials, but still it doesn't work, but instead of octypes, it displayed the word Ml in the column of altitude
+Ali Jan I can only suggest you to try different things. Of hundreds of mails I got on this issue, most were sorted with trying new OS and reinstallation.
I am also in a bit of ambiguity as far as elevation accuracy is concerned. Many say it is SRTM. But its not true for all the areas if I am not wrong. So accuracy of the DEM generated by GE is definitely not as good as the one generated using stereo pair, but however it gives a general idea of the terrain. However using this method you can extrapolate DEM to get still better spatial resolution (not accuracy)
I did the same procedure for an area but did not find any values in place of altitude. "ML>" was written in place of Altitude. Can you pleas help me to solve this issue?

Thanks for the video, Sir. I don't have surfer so I would want to know the arcGIS method? Can you please direct me to the link where you have taught that? Thanks
Hello, thankyou for your video! I follow your process but in excel the results i get have this form : 1178690400,2007-05-09T06:00:00Z,37.221769,22.167300,OCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN"> Do you know how can I fix this ??
hello sir, im an architecture student, i used this method to generate contours. in the preliminary steps where we have to click points, i obviously drew a site boundary, and clicked points within it, after the contours are generated, im unable to align it with site, however i tried matching and aligning the longitude and latitude of site corners with the x and y axes of the contours scale and it seems like the contours are going out of site boundary on cad. please help.

Hey, Its a nice video and good idea to share. May I know how much will be the accuracy of the spot heights that we are collecting from the google earth.
Dear Sir Thankyou so much for sharing such a valuable knowledge. I followed your steps and was working till yesterday. I tried it again today using TCX converter, but today it didnot give me the altitude, instead it updates data as "ml>". I have tried it several times, but the result was the same. Can you please help? Also I wanted to know how could I convert the longitude, latitude data that are in degree, minutes, seconds into the x, y coordinate system so that I can use the data from TCX converter into other civil engineering softwares. Waiting for help!!!!!

I've gone through the steps and after all this, my map looks like the topography lines are following a square grid of about acre sized squares. How can I fix this?
I think it depends on your input. If you have selected your points at regular intervals this might happen. Select in irregularly, and as close as possible. That might solve the issue. However you need to understand one thing that, elevations in google earth is an interpolated value and not the actual one. SO there would be slight inherent inaccuracies.
Stereo pair images can be obtained from any agency providing satellite data. Decide based on your location and purpose. By the way what resolution DEM are you looking for?

how to export it as a DEM?

True. I saw that later. But could not change video as it was a small issue.
which option is it?
Can one improve on accuracy in altitude by importing from elsewhere?
Your tutorials cover all the basic steps and much usefull. Thanks
For TCX converter, you can change the language to English from top right corner button on the screen (drop down menu) saying Dutch. Change it to English.

Ya, you are right. I had seen it of late.
I WATCH MOST OF YOUR VIDEOS AND I FOUND THEM IMPORTANT.
Thank You
Great tutorial! is there any way to convert those contours to 3d model?
Sir, thank you very much for the tutorial,
I have question that i have is the altitude we are getting is of the ground level or is of the rooftops.. IDK if th question is relevant.

I mean variation in ground height and top of buildings or structures.
Yes. You need to select points accordingly. Wherever you have digitized, you will get elevation of that point

in google earth we get historical images like that is it possible to extract the elevation of that particular image?or is it possible to extract historical elevation???
Just correlate the elevation values of different years. If they are different they its possible, else no

Hi,
There is no other option. If you need it anyway, buying is the only option
If I need the contour lines of a whole country, should I zoom to each part of it and do it seperately?
For this purpose I suggest you to download 30 meter free ASTER DEM
Wow! Bravo sir! I have learnt a lot from this video, thanks.
Respected Sir, it is taking much more time to update the altitude. What to do now?
This is really awesome I need to do this alot for the work i do....usually we hire a surveyor to do a topographic survey of the area. Thanks alot for sharing this tutorial i will definitely try this out
Thank you for your comments.
Could I use the contour map prepared by this procedure instead of digitize from scanned toposheet...?
bipin peethambaran of course you can. In fact, I feel that this will be more accurate than toposheet contours in many cases.
Geo-Spatial Tutorials Thanks for your precious time sir, one more doubt, how I can fix the scale of prepared map to 1:1000...?

you can change the language of the tcx converter, it is located at the top right side of the window it is Dutch by default, change it to English
kidus tesfaye Hi,
Thanks for the info
My points coordinate are not the same once in the TCX converter than the one I clicked in Google Earth. Any idea why?
+Laurence Ferland
May be you have interchanged lat and long values.
Thank you for you quick answer. I am pretty sure it is not an interchange value as the degrees are right, but not the minutes nor the seconds.
+Laurence Ferland
Looks like one is in decimal degrees and other is DMS format
Hi, I was trying this tutorial earlier. but software Surfer is my problem. how can I got this soft ware?
The altitudes are not updating in my case. Any Suggestions Plz
after updating altitude ..iam getting OCTTYPE HTML PUBLIC .....like this instead of altitude values ..how to get altitude values..
From the process the elevation data I found for an area ranges from 7 to 23. While the actual data collected from ground ranges from 36 to 60 meters. So is this elevation data reliable !?!?
Its interpolated values from SRTM
Hi,
Z value got from TCX converter is DTM or DSM?
DSM
On the Right Upper Corner_ There is written "Dutch" click on that to change the Software LANGUAGE for example ENGLISH for your convenient.
I followed this process but the elevation varies from 6 meters to 8 meters from the actual value collected from the field using DGPS.
Thanks for sharing. It was a great video! I noticed that you used Google Earth Pro. Is it possible to do the same procedure in Google Earth (not the Pro)?
there's an error, no elevation data show up on txc
I too have this problem, pls anwer tnx
Do you have a answer for this?
Use GPS Visualizer.com instead to generate a GPX file - no downloading an installing software to do this.
thx for sharing, can i use other cordinates longitude/latitude n get elevation data directly from TCX Converter?
thx
+Abdelali Gourfi
Hi,
Few people have asked this question. That is either problem with the installation or operating system. So try to re install tcx and try. Make sure that internet is connected when you do it.
If it still doesn't work, try to do it in different operating system or different computer. Most of the people told it worked after doing this. Hopefully it will work for you as well.
+Geo-Spatial Tutorials thnx :)
thank you for your best tutorial
Hello sir, TCX converter is not updating the altitude information. Please tell me any solution for this.
Thank you very much......................Explained Very well
wow it is too good but how can we change latitude and longitude in to meter either a conversion tool

Dear Dr. how can I get the free download software kml to shapefile converter that can help edit the elevations of points? I have downloaded the free KML2SHP converter but could not use it on my window 07. Would you help me reslove this problem/
There are many online converters. Latest versions of ArcGIS also can do it for you.
Hi,
The accuracy or the vertical elevation is as accurate as the the google earth.
I am following your tutorial and getting in TCX Converter in the ALT column a message: " DOOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
" in each row. I have Internet connection OK. Any idea ?. Thx.
Things went well until it came time to update the altitude. All the points in the file went from an altitude of 0 to having "ml>" listed. I'm not sure what ml> means.
+ Geospatial tutorials,
I tried the same version you used in you tutorials, but still it doesn't work, but instead of octypes, it displayed the word Ml in the column of altitude
+Ali Jan
I can only suggest you to try different things. Of hundreds of mails I got on this issue, most were sorted with trying new OS and reinstallation.
Thanks, very informative and was able to get my job done.
Hi . I get through the process but I didnt get the last part on GIS....could I use SAGA GIS?
Hi,
I have never worked with SAGA. SO I cant comment. But should be possible. In ArcGIS, QGIS, Surfer it is possible.
It is visible in curseres or area
Great post. I cant wait to start generating my own DEM's!
What the spatial resolution of dem extracted by GE?
I was looking for that answer myself. From what I have read, GE generates elevation from SRTM which is 30m resolution.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for this tutorial :)
Also, the button to change the language is on the top right.
Cheers!
I did the same procedure for an area but did not find any values in place of altitude.
"ML>" was written in place of Altitude. Can you pleas help me to solve this issue?

Welcome.
hello sir.. where can i find the two software > surfer and TCX converter?
Surfer is a paid software. You can get evaluation version. TCX can be downloaded online for free. You can also replace surfer with ArcGIS
oh thanks sir for your valuable information...
Hello, thankyou for your video!
I follow your process but in excel the results i get have this form :

Do you know how can I fix this ??
why does surfer cant detect the xls file of the contour? It only sees the csv format.
Does it work in demo version of Surfer?
+Dwayne Jugo Yes it works. It detects xls format also. Pl. recheck.
hello sir, im an architecture student, i used this method to generate contours. in the preliminary steps where we have to click points, i obviously drew a site boundary, and clicked points within it, after the contours are generated, im unable to align it with site, however i tried matching and aligning the longitude and latitude of site corners with the x and y axes of the contours scale and it seems like the contours are going out of site boundary on cad. please help.
There might be some projection issues. There is a video on changing projection. Follow that
Is their any automatic way to obtain equally spaced spotheights from googlle earth
Dear Sir after we got a contour line how to built a forfile project ?

Which software can solve to make a profile of project from contour line
+Khamphanh Chittavong
Can you describe your problem. I did not understand your requirement.
Daer sir
i am sorry.
i mean how to make a Longitudinal Profile
from contour line.
+Khamphanh Chittavong
I am unable to understand. Generally we draw profile for Z axis (elevation). How does profile of Longitude help? Anyway if you replace Z axis by longitude, you will be able to do it.
Hello sir @Geo-Spatial Tutorials i want to know Is there any software for downloading latest high resolution google earth images
You can directly download from Google Earth and the georeference it
Hello sir , I cant find any Altitude in TCX, every times is ml> . how can i solve my problem?
same here the altitude refuse showing up
Hi, That is very nice tut but do you know any software similary to Surfer ?
There are many. You can do it in ArcGIS also
Thanks a lot ......................on the up right side corner there is an option to change language in the tcx software
Hello,my ALT shows OCTYPE HT... why is that. After updating the altitude information

Firstly, thanks alot for this video, it's very intersting.I have the same prb, and i have internet connected. Can you give me the installation please.
just search in google, you will get it
I have demo version of surfer 13, in which some functions are disabled. So, sir provide me the link for full version.
Hey, Its a nice video and good idea to share. May I know how much will be the accuracy of the spot heights that we are collecting from the google earth.
It may not be very accurate. The base is SRTM interpolated data.
Dear Sir
Thankyou so much for sharing such a valuable knowledge.
Have you find help yet? I have the same problem.
Nice and clear tutorial, thanks.
Dear Dr. thanks, I have done it and succeeded. But the other issue is pending still.
What other problem are you talking about?
trying to update the altitudes but ml> is popping out, one has mentioned removing dots or commas, please someone help. Thanx

+Geo-Spatial Tutorials is there a more accurate way to get topography for a large site without a survey?
Ideal way would be to get very high resolution stereo pair images and create a DEM
I appreciate all the advice. How or where can I obtain these images?
Stereo pair images can be obtained from any agency providing satellite data. Decide based on your location and purpose. By the way what resolution DEM are you looking for?
can't work sir after some steps when i click up date Altitude it gives me ml> so what shall i do
I found the solution to this: gis.stackexchange.com/questions/177864/update-altitude-does-not-work-on-tcx-converter
tell me alternative software insted of tcx converter because i dont have tcx converter
I do not know any other software. You can just download it by searching in Google
