      Using a dslr you would reduce the on board sound leveller and set pro to +20. On board reduced to -12.This would provide clear audio for voice and kill more background noise.

    i kinda prefer the Rode MICRO over the PRO? Why is it better sounding? Or is it just me?
    Thanks Ryker Dane!!!

      Dont go by this video, the one thing this video messes up in is it fails to use the Rode's superior amp and in all the samples here the in camera pre amp is turned up to 15-16... If you are going to use Sony's garbage preamp then there is no reason to use a good mic at all.

    • @Nonskiller
      @Nonskiller 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly... just him showing as the Micro.. it seems better lolol. But I feel I wouldn't use the Micro in noisy areas. I would use it I would just the Pro instead.

    • @JustinCrediblename
      @JustinCrediblename 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nonskiller Just use the wind sock. it sounds fantastic! lots of high frequency data from the Micro that the Pro seemed to be missing! I don't regret choosing the micro at all! I've got $700 gift cert. money on Amazon and I have nothing to spend it on! 'definitely not going to bother with the Pro. It's too big, too heavy, too unbalanced, and I prefer the sound quality of the micro!!

    Great video! I have a new Sony A6500 and I would like to record better audio. I had decided to get the VideoMic Pro but after watching this video... I've just bought the VideoMicro for a few reasons: small size, no battery needed, great audio quality on the A6300/A6500, price (and dead-cat is included!). This video helped me a lot. THANK YOU so much!!

    The videomic pro is a must for all canon cameras because the on board pre-amp is terrible and the Rode amp is a lifesaver. The pre-amp in the sony cameras are amazing and I've found the micro to sound much better than my pro, and it leaves a much smaller footprint. The micro on my 70D sounds like absolutely garbage in any setting haha. The pro has its advantages being more of a shotgun mic picking up only whats in front of it while the micro is more of an omni directional pattern but it creates a much more lifelike sound, similar to Rodes stereo videomic. Great review, I came here from @Rode Microphones twitter share!

      The Bens Garage alot of people dont use onboard preamps for the same reason they dont use onboard mics! So, I wondet how the micro would perform on a Canon with something like a saramonic preamp? Good reviews and it sells for around $25.

    I used the video micro for some challenging interviews near a beach with a ton of wind and was shocked at the quality of the sound . From some online reviews the mic seemed a bit tinny but from my experience I found it to be quite good quality. You do need to use the fuzzy cat windscreen because the micro will pickup a ton of wind noise. I also shot some small music groups on the street and the sound was tremendous. I have been editing for over 30 years so I have heard all kinds of sound and for the money this little mic is a winner in my opinion. It is rugged and the suspension system Lyre is pretty rugged as well. The mic is entirely metal body and the connection to the mic and camera is very sturdy. I will buy another one if I can find one on sale.

    Just the video I was looking for. Thanks a million. I couldn't figure out why my audio was still coming out low with the Micro, internal audio at 16, even in quiet place. Apparently I need to take the wind sleeve off and only use it when there's loud external noise. Thanks again! I subbed for your excellent work.

    MICRO KILLING IT!!!

  • @panmaew
    @panmaew 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I believe the Micro is designed to have the included furry windshield always on to neutralize the mic's sensitivity from the upper to mid range. It does sound incredible, though, for such a short cardiod mic powered only via the 3.5mm jack.

    • @TheRykerDane

    Microphone RODE VideoMicro works on a laptop?

  • @brandonlonvelin846
    @brandonlonvelin846 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Same the micro sounds the best, and it's not ginormous like the video mic pro. It's very tiny and compact and inexpensive

    • @TheRykerDane
      @TheRykerDane  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yep it works very well!

    • @BryanMiraflor
      @BryanMiraflor 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @brandon lonvelin well the entire point of the videomic PRO is to isolate sound when you're around a lot of people; it's a shotgun mic.
      whereas the video MICRO is more of an omni directional microphone; taking sound from all sides.

  • @iandavis1355

  • @Athaeus

    The openings on the side are actually for the purpose of noise cancellation for off-axis sounds, not to pick up surround sound. You can see (and hear) this more clearly in larger shotgun microphones.

  • @fanshen

    This was really helpful. Thanks for making the effort. Mostly prefer the pro - but the one with the water background was pretty loud and didn't filter out the water well when you spoke. Makes me wonder what it would be like to film in a room of people but focusing on 1. Maybe best to just get a lav for that.

    Thanks for a very clear and to the point comparison. I think both cameras are top in the specific environment I want to film. I read that there is a $ 150 difference in price.

  • @TheMarsgia

    The +20db is the best choice to get the best sound possible. Lower the levels in-camera, and set the mic on +20 db, it will create a better sound than using 0db + high in-camera levels.

    The Rode mics obviously sound better than the onboard, but you could use an equalizer in your editing software to make the cheaper mic sound more like the more expensive and vice versa and save a bunch of money. The micro mic does sound clearer (more information above 10k) the more expensive one sounds fuller (you could boost 160-200hz) a little eq on the cheap one and you’d get comparable results to the more expensive, assuming you prefer the more expensive. .

  • @raymondrak961
    @raymondrak961 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    A lapel wireless system might have been better outdoors. Any comparison indoors between an omnidirectional mic (Sony on camera) vs. an omnidirectional mic (Rode) will always favor the omnidirectional. And why no wind screen on the Micro?

  • @ShaunMcPherson
    @ShaunMcPherson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey! great video thank you! just fyi, it's my understanding that the "ports" on the side of the micro are actually for rejecting a little side noise, just a little, compared to a full shotgun mic's many "ports" to make the mic super directional, and reject side and rear noise! I love the micro.

    Wow, that new Rode VIDEO MICRO sounds awesome in every scenario, although at 6:10 the lack of wind sock resulted in much more wind noise than the Rode VideoMic Pro. I'm just assuming that the included windsock handles that fine.

    You really need to redo this test with the Rode videoMicro. No one in their right mind would run the preamp that hot, in fact you should always start at 0 or 1/8th or 1/4 gains.
    I used the Rode VideoMicro with my A6000 and A7SII, it's fantastic, use windscreen, and push your gain down to 1/4 or 1/8th. The passive mic is be design, run a little hot.
    If you really want better quality, I used a Tascam DR-05, and used the input there and set limits on that, and allow that dedicated system compress and boost as needed. You can set that to half, and it won't clip or come out too tinny with sudden bursts or loud environment. You can even in system set and EQ pass.

    micro 50$, pro 180$... most of the time you don't have earphones on so the quality difference is not really noticeable. the price is and it's awesome. I ordered the videomic go for my 70D and I really hope that it is not too quiet and still good

    i want to use the micro over the vmp because of how small and compact it is.. but it's not as good as the vmp mic. I've tried both on my t4i and the micro is just not the right fit for that camera.

    I was looking at the Sony 630 today and was told in shop it could only take Sony's small external mic looking at the port on side it only had two micro USB ports CAN i ask how did you attach your rode Mic as it looks like it has a round connector and unless I missed it there is nowhere to plug it in?

      The sony a6300 should have a mic input. Thats how I plugged it in

    Is there any way to get the Micro to not cut off all of the low end frequencies?.. Micro, Seems to thin out the audio and roll off all the low end.. The Videomic Pro sounds much more full, flat, and natural with the low end frequencies still intact.... I like the Pro's sound.... and Thanks!

      You could put an EQ on your audio track in your editing software. Boost a little 160-200hz and the cheaper mic will have a fuller sound to it

    Is it possible to go out from my audio interface TRS balanced.. with a long run.. directly into a 3.5 mm a7iii mic input jack without losing the balance?

      hmm, not sure about that

      @@TheRykerDane oh I figured out the answer... It is no. But I got a beachtek preamp with XLR in and 3.5 mm route which does the trick. It's good for capturing an audio backup for in-camera just in case... Studio setting that is.

    I own both. Technically you'd think the pro would sound better. Turn on the mic +20 and turn down the camera mic right... for some reason I always get better audio from the Mico.

    The pro, like a lot of mics and a lot of rode mics as far as I can hear, is muffled and bloated sounding. People confuse that with sounding rich or full, but it's just muffled with a heavy low frequency emphasis and low resolution. The reason the micro sounds better is that you can hear more texture and detail. There is a cost to be paid in sibilance and potentially irritating high frequencies, but sound is never perfect, not even to ears lol. I'm stoked that this doesn't sound like most of the other Rode mics.
