  • 9 Week Old Leonberger Puppy Training
With two small children at home, waiting to train (puppy school start date etc) wasn't an option this time. Leonberger puppies grow crazy fast! For reference, when he came home at 8 weeks he was 21lbs. By 10 weeks he was 31lbs. With the growth comes reach and they are quickly able to get into things you thought were out of reach. But with Little O being my 4th personal dog in addition to family dogs growing up, I felt ready for the independent training adventure.
Our leonberger puppy is incredibly food motivated and eager to please so training has been incredibly easy so far! We train as a group with our other dog and kids (so lots of distractions) and alone as well and both outside and inside in order to vary the distractions.
We have been working on the following commands at 9 weeks and will build on this list as he grows:
    -Come
    -Sit
    -Lay down
    -Watch me
    -Touch
    -Paw
In addition to these he is mostly potty trained and he is getting better with his crate and car rides. Unlike our first Leonberger, Monzie, this guy doesn't attempt to jump up on anyone and we have been celebrating and encouraging his 'four on the floor' attitude.

Good job! I miss the chunky clumsy cuteness of a leo puppy.

It is over way to soon!! Every day he’s changing. Something gets chunky and then it grows over night and “leans” out again.
Working on consistency still but I’m so proud of his eagerness to learn!

I just learned of this breed. How much does it cost to feed a leonberger? They are massive!

What do you feed Little O during training?

At this time(in the video), chicken. I’d pan fry chicken breasts and then rip it into small pieces and freeze in small batches. Every few days I’d pull a batch out to thaw for training. Now I’m using a store bought bag of liver treats. He’s also crazy about croissants 😬 but eggs seem to cause a reaction so he’s not getting anything with egg now as we explore food sensitivities.

    Any potty training tips?

They each begin to move/walk in a certain way right before they need to go. Watching them closely the first week they are with you, you can learn their “way”. Scoop em up and run outside! The shock of you grab and dashing will keep them from doing any accidents on you 😉 always keep a treat in your pocket or by the potty door for a reward but more importantly, throw them a party. Squeal with glee, pet and fawn all over them after they do their business outside. Leo’s live to please their humans.
Don’t train to a pee pad. You’ll have to then untrain that behaviour later.
If you don’t have a backyard, live in an apartment etc, ensure you go out around 10-20 minutes after a meal and every 3 hours around the clock. It’s like having a newborn! We carried ours outside so that there would never be accidents in the elevators or hallways for them to smell and come back to for future accidents. Usually by 4 months carrying a Leo isn’t a realistic option anymore but ours have been potty trained long before then.
Don’t scold/smack for accidents. They are just doing what nature tells them they need to do. Instead work through the routine. Get them outside (ideally while another person is cleaning up, use an enzyme cleaner) and going through the motions, even if they don’t do anything.

Hi, quick tip, teach Lil O with diffrent commands - preferably in a diffrent language so every dog knows exactly when and what he is supposed to do.

That’s an interesting perspective on training! Not one I’ve considered before. The dogs have commands in 2 languages already but English is primary. Never thought to give each a language!
