    Thank you for posting this. We actually self-produced a half hour tv pilot already and we're trying to get it into the right show-runner's hands. We've had a few promising meetings but so far nothing has come out of it. We've submitted to a few film festivals that accept filmed TV Pilots and we're waiting to see if we got in. When you're on the outside of Hollywood, it's quite difficult to break in.

    Two and a half men is such a good example of a good pilot.
    Ends old life: Alan gets kicked out of his house after having an argument with his wife.
    Begins new life: he goes to his rich older brother's looking for some (apparently temporary) shelter.
    Will he or won't he: will charlie take care of him or will alan be able to find a new place somewhere else?

  • @fakecubed
    @fakecubed 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    If you do write a pilot, how involved do you actually have to be in the ongoing production of a series? I'm a successful professional writer in other media, and have absolutely zero interest in living in Hollywood (or NYC, or any other show business hotspots) for any length of time, or being an actor, or a producer, or any of that stuff, but I've always thought it would be interesting to branch out and write a screenplay. I know basically nothing about the business.
    How often do people write a screenplay for a TV pilot and the studio is okay with that writer not continuing to write the show and keep it going? Is that a deal-breaker or a serious obstacle to getting a show made? I know virtually every show is written by multiple people, but I usually see the pilot writer's name in the credits as Executive Producer and writing multiple episodes a season as the show continues. I have a comfortable life on the other side of the country and don't want to make screenwriting my full time career. Should I stick to the occasional movie script that'll be one-and-done should a studio buy it, or is TV pilot writing a viable part time/freelance job one can do (at least mostly) remotely from anywhere?

    • @purpleplanetary
      @purpleplanetary 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can just sell your TV screenplay, since any showrunner hired by the network will rewrite the show's pilot in their voice regardless of it's original quality.

      Submit to screenwriting competitions/festivals. It’s a good route to getting an agent which can then get you booked on shows which can then lead to you eventually being able to pitch to the networks. You have to find your way onto a TV staff job before you can get anywhere close to the network trusting your work will be good.... unless they buy from you straight up if you win a screenwriting competition.

    • @empresssk
      @empresssk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this is going to sound stupid... but can the life-changing event be as simple as the introduction of a villain? I mean there would be no clear beginning of a new life, other than saying "hey this bad guy is here now. I mean I guess it would be a "new life of dealing with this guy" and the question would be "what's going to happen?" but that's so vague compared to the examples you guys gave. I'm pretty good at coming up with ideas, but writing them is hard. I'm not really a writer, and I fear that a poorly written pilot could hold my story back. I never know where or how to start, and I've heard that after the first 10 pages, the executives will just stop reading if it's not interesting. I've watched all the videos in this series, but I feel like I still just don't know where in my story to start or what plots should be combined together. It feels like I have a book series, but someone forgot to tell me what order the books go in. I mean I know when important events would happen but I can't figure out when the less important happen? I have all the parts you have mentioned in your series, but I just can't seem to find the right way to tell the story. Do you have any suggestions? I've worked really hard on the characters and the events, and I really want to give the story a fighting chance.

      I would encourage you to write lots of short stories (whether connected or independent from each other.) This will sharpen your skill set in writing small arcs which is what makes up television shows. Then in a couple of years, where you can grow your work further, you’ll not only have a lot of source material but you’ll have learned how to tell a story and be able to produce/shoot phenomenal work on your first go round. This is what I’d tell my younger writer-self.

    Like, when you are writing a crime show that has many many elements of a case not yet federally prosecuted, doesn't that ruin the prosecution efforts? Like, let's say that someone is framed for murder, and the prosecutor's keep withholding discovery evidences and it gets to this point of the trial being poisoned by contempt bc of all the media contempt, that movie OLD is the trigger for my asking this...That is so realistically plausible, that I would think only after trial should tv shows be made. This is an insightful video, but has absolutely nothing to do with actually writing a treatment, nor does it have any examples of treatments.
