      Well, since there are so many different cards to choose from in commander, it's actually not that difficult to get "duplicates". I got a mill commander deck, where there are about 10 or so cards that do pretty much the same (mill the opponent for a couple of cards and provide a creature to defend against potential attacks from the opponent). Most commander decks I encounter, actually have a lot of cards which are similar or downright the same. It doesn't really matter if you draw "Random Creature" or "Creature of Randomness" if they do pretty much the same.

      At least he's having fun with mill decks. I'm getting tired of the lifelink aggro BS that everyone is playing. Anyone can do damage to win in 4 turns. Unless you're just trying to rank up, I don't see the point to playing aggro. It's boring and unfulfilling. Old school magic players are all about those crippling effects. It's not good enough to just defeat your opponent, you must crush their soul so that they defeat themselves. I've been messing with risen reef, omniscience, flood of tears, and agent of treachery. I bounce everything then steal all my opponent's lands. I got to diamond with this deck and had fun while doing it.

    • @thomascarrie2312

      You know mill is super viable

    • @Ap0Kal1ps3
      @Ap0Kal1ps3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@thomascarrie2312 Yeah since ashiok got added it's okay. Still loses more often than not. And with the way a lot of decks race to remove excess cards from their library, you're usually just helping a person by milling them. Like my agent of treachery/risen reef/mirror image deck. I just need to make sure I get a bunch of land out early or play a nissa or omniscience and the mill deck doesn't get a fifth turn. Plus without ashiok, there's not a lot to deal with gaea's blessing.
      Oh well, rotation happened so it's not like gaea's blessing is viable anymore but you get my point.

    • @brokenursa9986
      @brokenursa9986 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I've built two mill decks, both Commander, one led by Nekusar and the other led by Phenax. The Nekusar deck sucks, and I hate it, by the Phenax deck, which is built around Relentless Rats and Persistent Petitioners, is actually a decent deck. I built in an infinite rat engine that significantly increases the speed of my milling.

    Magic games tend to come down to two factors in my experience: deckbuilding and resourcefulness. Because of the random shuffle, you are always going to be doing the best you can with the resources at your disposal. Deckbuilding just makes sure that you are as likely as possible to have any given resource when you need it.

      @Bowstick That's not what the short system is. The long system gets a new term every million, and uses a variation of the old term for thousands. In french, the scale is as follows : Millions, Milliards, Billions, Billiards, Trillions, Trilliards. The short scale (or short system) gets a new term every thousand. I'll put in parentheses what the term in french is : Million (Million), billion (milliard), trillion (billion), quadrillion (billiard). When Mat says trillion, he really means a thousand billions, or 10^12.
      Your error is in converting between numeral systems. Indeed, a (short) billion is equal to a (long) milliard, and a (short) trillion is equal to a (long) billion, but a (short) trillion is not equal to a (short) billion.
      (Boy my idle game knowledge can finally be useful for once)

The whole point of it is Yugi and Rebecca had the same exact duel as their grandparents did 20 years before. What is the percent of that?

      Same. I respect that milling is a valid and effective strategy but it's sooooo boring to play against and I cannot for the life of me guess how it could be entertaining to play. And I'm pretty sure that it's not even that strong/clever of a strategy, you could probably make a deck that utterly wrecks those milling decks, by building it so that it uses the graveyard as much as possible, cards that plays from the graveyard, or that bring cars back from it, or that give effects that are enhanced by having cards in your graveyard.
      Or maybe you could just make a 400 cards deck and watch them flounder as they realize that if they try milling they might end up reaching their last card first...

    • @totem95
      @totem95 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@swordcrab3181 Is Traumatise relevant? You mill half the deck with it, so bye-bye to ~200 of your cards.
      But yeah... Pure mill is the most boring type of control. Graveyard decks aren't that much good against it either because they'll counter/exile your spells unless you get them to waste enough ressources to play them. Graveyards are public so they'll know what to counter and what not to counter. Elixir of life is probably the best counter to mill

    • @Ecanze
      @Ecanze 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As someone who likes playing mill and other weird win cons I can say that decks that revolves around sacrifice and graveyard (Basically any deck that runs similar to your standard Meren of clan nel toth deck) that uses the graveyard as a mulch box is horrifying to a mill player.

    • @swordcrab3181
      @swordcrab3181 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@totem95 I'm not a very experienced player, so I don't know the in and out of countering and strategy, nor am I familliar with all the cards. I haven't even built a deck yet (I'm tinkering with it, but it's very much a WIP), and I only do okay at using the premade decks.
      What I do know is that when I get matched with someone who has a 160 card deck, or if they play the Persistent Petitioners I immediately lose any interest in the game. Because from there I can predict how it'll go from a mile away. From time to time I still try to see if I can aggro them before they have their counters and mill set up, but nowadays I usually just immediately concede the game.
      I don't mind losing, not even losing hard. I've ended games at -40 hp, sometimes even as I thought my victory to be assured. I have nothing against losing. Hell, I love to see an opponent snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. But being mill is not fun, and if the game is not fun why would I play?

      Thomas Pettier you’ve obviously never heard of Ulamog the Ceaseless Hunger and Through the Breach. Through the Breach brings an Eldrazi into play from your deck and gives it haste. It gets exiled at the end of your turn but one turn is usually all you need. Ulamog is the worst Eldrazi to deal with in my opinion because when he attacks he sends the TOP 20 CARDS OF YOUR LIBRARY STRAIGHT TO EXILE. Not the graveyard EXILE you aren’t getting those back at least not most of them. Also this effect doesn’t kick in when he hits you or if he hits a creature just the very action of him attacking does this. I played a couple of vintage cubes a while back and there was a guy I fought both times that got this combo BOTH TIMES

      Remember what he said about the multiple similar effects. In Commander, you can put in the 100 coolest cards you have or you can ensure that you multiple overlapping things. If you are playing a slower deck that needs to ramp, make sure that you have enough ramp to get there. The exact math of how much of every effect you want will depend on your target power level (casual /cEDH) and a bunch of other stuff.
      I highly recommend (if you have not watched it before) to watch the "Command Zone" podcast (and or there "Game Knights", they are fun) as they are a dedicated commander podcasts that go over this type of stuff in some detail.
