    Please, do not EVER turn your back to traffic like that. All it takes is one driver to drift 6 inches too close and wipe you out. Leave yourself an escape route if you HAVE to be on the traffic side, and always face and watch the traffic. All they see is something to slow them down. Not someone in trouble that may be out working on the problem. Facing traffic gives you at least a chance to try to get out of the way if someone gets too close. It is easy to get too focused on the problem at hand and forget about the little things like that, but those little things may save your life.

      Yes! You are right. It was dangerous to be on the driver’s side. Even with the vest and the triangles out we had to use extreme caution and look out for traffic. Not a good situation.

    Like I often say, sometimes it's just the hand of God that guides you safely out of danger.
    I love seeing Kevin's hat all the time, I went to the same school. Those old ragged out Volvos where so much fun to drive. I took the night classes so we would start off each afternoon driving around Phoenix in rush hour with people zooming all around us while the students were grinding gears and missing turns. Those instructors probably went home and got drunk every night after work but I had a blast.
    Love the videos. I've been watching since the very start when you would interview Kevin after school each day.

    • @TheJoyofTrucking
      @TheJoyofTrucking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow!!!! Exciting to hear that you’ve been along since the beginning AND went to the same school! When did you graduate? Your assessment of instructors needing stress relief sounds about right! Lol!!! Especially because most students had no idea what to do with that stick shift.
      Are you driving now? Do you live in Phoenix? Thanks for your comment and being a ‘founding member’ of this community!!!

      Hey guys,
      I was a carpenter in Phoenix for 40 years till I retired in 2020. I got bored after a while and decided to go get my CDL. I've always wanted to drive trucks ever since I was a little kid, I just got sucked into construction work and started making too much money to quit. Anyway, I graduated and got my CDL last November. I went to work for Schneider for about a month but I didn't like it much, they had me on a dedicated account hauling tile flooring from Los Angeles around the southwest but since the loads were so heavy I had to run with a lightweight truck. They are simply a driver's seat and a little bunk to sleep in, very minimal. In January my daughter and son in law ended up buying an old fixer upper house up in Holbrook so I've been remodeling for the last few months. I should be done pretty soon and planning to go otr with Werner this summer. Maybe I'll see you around.
      Thanks again for all the videos, and stay safe out there. ✌️

    About 7 years ago I was driving on the 210 west in Pasadena. I was in the far left lane. I heard a boom and flash to my right. A dump truck for Caltrans blew it's right steer, veered right and right over a car. Unfortunately the driver of the car lost his life.

    • @TheJoyofTrucking
      @TheJoyofTrucking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is so very sad. I’m glad you shared the story here. Terrible situation. So sorry the person lost their life. Hard on the dump truck driver too, having to live with that. And hard on everyone who was there and witnessed it…like you, Jim. I hope this helps viewers who read your comment understand the seriousness of this type of equipment failure. Practicing blowouts on the simulator really helped prepare Kevin. We are so grateful.

    How common do you think this situation (steer tire blowout) is? Every driver at some point (just a matter of time)? Or less often .. luck (or unluck) of the draw? Enjoying the channel. Stay safe!

    • @TheJoyofTrucking
      @TheJoyofTrucking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We think it’s luck of the draw. Not an eventuality. Especially if you always check your tires properly, have good quality tires and keep them properly inflated. Having practiced on the simulator really helped Kevin handle the situation. I hope you get a chance on one. Otherwise, know what to do but then don’t worry about it. Hope that helped ease your mind. 😃

    How is RoadMaster CDL school. The Driving Academy is horrible, they don’t train you, they put you in a broken down truck, with horrible brakes. They put me in a truck and walked away as I tryed to figure things out by myself. 30 students to 3 trucks. $4,400 for the school to give you horrible training. You ask questions and they treat you like your dumb. Just a horrible 1st week experience.

    • @michaelrains2268
      @michaelrains2268 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Shawn, so about Roadmaster. Well yes they are good but before you sight on the dotted line consider a few items. It's expensive seven thousand dollars, there is less expensive out there . You have 4 weeks to earn your CDL there a lot of knowledge thrown at you very quickly. One week will be decated to classroom and getting your class A permit. The balance is yard movemers , none of this is easy as it sounds or they make it out to be . Get you DOT medical and have your permit before you start my advice also start learning the pre - trip process all this information is on line . This is very excelarated if in 4weeks you don't have your license your out 7thousand and will not train you any further. The recruiter will not tell you this information. Yes they will pay for school if you pa
      ss and if you drive for them . Just do all your research and go into this with you eyes wide open and don't let them sell you a bill of goods or empty to good to be true promises. Best wishes!

    • @TheJoyofTrucking
      @TheJoyofTrucking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So sorry your school isn’t doing a better job! Kevin’s school wasn’t particularly impressive either. We don’t know about Roadmaster personally, but have spoken with drivers who said it was a good experience with lots of wheel time and learning other skills. Our guess is that with the less expensive schools you have to be pro-active and pushy. Don’t let it discourage you!!! Most 4 week schools just focus on getting you to pass the test to get your CDL. So a lot of the learning is up to you.

    bro, what speed that blow out happened? also, were u on cruise control? if so , did you disable the cruise? did you ever use speed pedal to compensate with the drag? thanks

    • @TheJoyofTrucking
      @TheJoyofTrucking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and your questions! Kevin was going 65 miles per hour. He was coming into Albuquerque with lots of traffic, so kept it at 65 and was probably not on cruise control because of that. He stepped on the brakes immediately, so even if he would have been, that disengages cruise control immediately. He did not step on the gas pedal again. Only the brakes. The simulator blow out episode really helped prepare him!! Kudos to Werner on that!

      @James G Understanding DOT clock is not easy. You can split your clock after 2 hours off duty in the sleeper and keep your driving hours. If you run out of time you can use personal conveyance to get to a nearest safe haven, even with a load. But that should be a rare occurrence!

    What's the big deal ? No drama there, it's a flat tire not a blow out ? You wouldn't know what to do with a real blow out at 70 miles an hour .
