      I agree. I made similar comments above. It was messy and the GM could have used the 1st round pick to trade for multiple players to make that team a multi-super bowl contender but didn't have the wisdom to see what he had in his possession.

    • @calebashford1686
      @calebashford1686 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brees didn't throw temper tantrums or roll his eyes after a int. I seen him mad one time at Jeremy Shockey for blowing his cover and the two went on to pass for a touchdown in a super bowl. Manning and Brady have so much film of their emotions, and to be fair, it's understandable to get upset sometimes, but Brees read the same body language every down. "Going to move these damn chains to that endzone and get 6". No matter the situation. As emotional as it is to play football as a QB, to remain zoned in and stay professional is impressive.

      Yep. Only downside is that shoulder injury definitely shortened his prime a little bit. Had he not suffered it (and still been in the league at that point) he probably would’ve had 2, maybe 3 years left before his arm started going out on him.

Someone asked about Drew, and Coach Tiller said he had spoken to Drew recently, and said in his opinion, the best thing that could happen for Drew would be for the Chargers to pick Eli Manning, and for Drew Brees to get the hell away from that team.

    The rule of thumb is this, if u draft a 1st round QB and he has 1 good season like drew did, it’s time to build around him and the chargers really kept sabotaging they team. The had no business drafting rivers, the should of got a top wideout to help brees. So if Brees got top wide out, prime LT and prime Antonio Gates.with a line, u not losing against Brady and company. They split the baby and never recovered

    • @clark2501
      @clark2501 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That, and the fact that the Chargers never got Brees a dominant defense like Brady had at the beginning of his career, and even throughout most of it. I think the best defense they gave Brees was in 2004 and it was above average, maybe decent. That was enough to get them to 12-4 with what they had on offense. That was in a time period when good/great offenses couldn’t carry an eh at best defense as easily.

    • @jjsteel43
      @jjsteel43 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's all because of A.J. Smith. He was a new GM and he didn't draft Brees and wanted to pick his QB of the future but I agree with you 100%. Every time I re-watch the drama from Eli in the 2004 draft, I think about how the Chargers had Drew and really didn't need to draft a QB but it was all because of A.J. Smith

  • @michaelg7904
    @michaelg7904 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The rift between Marty and AJ Smith started in the 2003 draft whereas Marty wanted AJ to trade up and get Troy Polamalu. As we know, Smith wound up ignoring Marty's desire for an excellent safety and Smith stayed put and drafted safety Terrence Kiel in the late 2nd round. History tells us Marty was right. Drafting Rivers was not popular with many Chargers fans at the time because many of us believed Brees hadn't been given enough line and receiver talent to truly succeed.
    Note: As for the 2004 draft, the Chargers got Rivers and some picks, including Merriman and Kaeding (who wound up costing the Bolts playoff wins), the BEST pick there would have been Larry Fitzgerald -- the type of player Brees really needed to thrive at the QB position.

    • @clark2501
      @clark2501 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t think it’s that big of a difference. Hell Brees did what he did with his small stature, above average arm strength at best, and his shoulder injury. All without a pro bowl WR until 2017. Most, if not all of the QBs at the top of the list in career stats had at least 1 HOF WR, and some had multiple. Brees will likely go down with none. Even if MT does make the HOF, he came at the end of Brees’ prime. The only big difference between those two are wins and championships and that’s on the organization and coaching, not a single player. It didn’t help that the organization he went to and spent most of his career on had 1 playoff win in almost 4 decades of existence before his time there.

I have no doubt that, following a 15-1 season that ended badly, Dean Spanos would have fired Cowher and replaced him with Norv Turner or someone else who had no business being a head coach. Especially since that was Cowher's fourth AFC Championship game loss at home. That's the difference between stable and unstable ownership. Outside of the '04 season, he looked pretty average and even in that one bright spot season, they couldn't even snag a playoff win against the worst AFC team. Guess he just needed a change of scenery and a weaker conference. Wasn't really like the Chargers made a bad decision letting him go. Rivers had an overall better SD career than Brees did.
