In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm diving into music from an Anime show for the very first time. I'm sure it won't surprise you that I've never watched any Anime, so I don't have much exposure to the art form. I'm starting with il vento d'oro from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. This music by Yugo Kanno is quite infectious and bouyant and full of energy. Come along for the fun ride!

I respect this guy for 2 reasons based on what I've seen from this video.
#1 He is open minded, he came for the music, he focused on the music. Other people would've been like "eww anime music? cringe bla bla bla"
#2 He actually took the time to do a little research about what anime is since he genuinely has no idea what it is. Some people would've just pretended to know what it is and even fake react just for the views.
actually its complete opposite people pretend not to know what it is and get huge views there an entire channel called Nicholas Light TV who got millions of views while lying about literally every aspect of his life in his previous music reaction videos that are now deleted he often referenced anime and explained anime related lyrics about aot, naruto demon slayer etc and than made a fake first time reactions on them got millions of views and now faked his entire life story ive heard from people who watched him before that his music reactions were also faked crazy how lying but being loud can bring such succsess

Anime music can be extremely hard hitting with copyright, please take care
it's cause Japanese Copyright laws are kinda non-existent. it's usually a default "no" unless the artist themselves allows it. they are very protective of there property in most cases.
It sounds like he possibly both pitched it up an sped it up a bit in editing so he should be okay.
Mainly infamous with Hiroyuki Sawano music, but Yugo Kanno’s soundtracks (like JoJo) hasn’t been as bad, JoJo’s dedicated YTers often are fine with playing the music in the background.
Although in anime openings credits music or ending credits music (rather than scores) that is something to be really cautious of, so as much as I too would recommend “Idol” by Yoasobi, it’s a banger, I would be cautious as well.

JoJo's has such a deep connection to music, especially 70's to 90's rock. Not only are most of the characters named after bands and songs, but the soundtrack also keeps up with the references from time to time. Unlike most animes, they use pre-existing songs during the credits of each episode, the first one being Roundabout by Yes. Some original compositions also do not hide their inspirations: "Knights of Terror", the theme of two characters of part 1 named Bruford and Tarkus, sounds straight from an ELP record, and "Welcome to the World" from part 2 has the exact same start as Owner of a Lonely Heart
Well the best boy in the early seasons was Speedwagon, so there's that.
I think it was Eyes Over Heaven, but a lot of the soundtrack was really on point for that

One of the most iconic anime ever is Cowboy Bebop and it's VERY jazz-influenced soundtrack. Yoko Kano composed the soundtrack. And WHAT a soundtrack it is.

the thing about JoJo's is that there's music references EVERYWHERE. A lot of the artists you've reacted to are referenced in the series. As an example the main villain for of part 1 and 3 is inspired to Ronnie James Dio and Marlon Brando.
"JoJo" itself is a reference to something from rock music.

Lots of people already recommending more anime music, but I definitely recommend Cruel Angel's Thesis from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Sort of like a late 90's japanese jazz and rock fusion. One of the most famous (and imo best) anime openings, and has sort of transcended the medium of "anime music" to just being an incredibly popular song for karaoke and stuff in Japan.
When he's on the Evangelion train, he may as well check that haunting ending theme 'Hostility Restrained'.
A cool fact about Jojo is that their characters and powers names are mostly references to 70's+ music. A good example is Golden Wind's main villain, which is called Diavolo and his power is called King Crimson with a special ability called Epitaph.

After watching your channel for quite some time now, I would have never expected to hear the words "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure" coming out of your mouth haha. This feels like one weird cross-over of my interests and I'm all here for it
You should hear Sawano Hiroyuki music. My recomendation:
1. OST from Attack on Titan (especially main theme "ətˈæk 0n tάɪtn " (yeah, he love strange naming of tracks:DD))
2. Openings and endings from Legend of The Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These ("Binary Star", "Cry", "Tranquility")
3. OST from Mobile Suit Gundam: Unicorn ("Into the sky", "Re: I am")
...and there is more. I just remember my favorites:D
Just reiterating the persons recommendation of Sawano, who is absolutely one of the most prolific Japanese composers who works on both anime and video games. His work on Attack on Titan (as mentioned above) is truly amazing both in the show and as an individual piece.
Yes! Came here to say this. I was first introduced to Sawano through his work on Aldnoah Zero, which was an okay show but the soundtrack blew me away. Recently, I really admired his work on the Fate/Strange Fake - Whispers of Dawn OVA. Honestly, seeing "Soundtrack by Hiroyuki Sawano" in promotional material for an anime is one of the things that's most likely to get me to check it out, he's so talented.
As you mentioned AOT, is worthy of a special mention the 3º Ending, "Yuugure no Tori - Shinsei Kamattechan". Harmony in that one is pretty curious, I'd be great to watch that analysis.

There is so much great anime music out there, but if you want the place to go next I can only imagine it being Cowboy Bebop's amazing soundtrack.
I had to get the soundtrack on vinyl because it's so good, It's the only soundtrack that I own.
If you ever want to delve into Yugo Kanno's work in JoJo again, please consider checking out "Stardust Crusaders" (both the title of the part as well as the song), I think that is still my favorite piece from him!

It's a bit of a meme that when the villain is about to defeat him he would say "I, Giorno Giovanna have a piano", and that part starts playing in the distance as he's able to turn the tides of the fight

This just popped up in my feed and now I want to rewatch JoJo
YOASOBI's Idol was such a hit because it was not only a great song itself but it was really thought out. First time you hear it, you will love it for what they did with the music. Then you need to watch the first episode of Oshi no Ko and then watch Idol in english and look at the lyrics. It will hit you on an emotional level.
This song as well as the anime look and sound really upbeat and happy but the first impression can't be further from reality

One of the more interesting elements of Japanese-originating music is that Japan has sort of digested and mixed up so many genres, both their own internal styles as well as Western styles, into a sort of stew with no artificial "genre" barriers.
Most fellow prog fans I've found can fall in love with Japanese stuff because it's as likely to pull from disco-dancing synth-pop from the 80's, their own big surge of funk in the 70's, a smattering of jazz, metal, classical, and whatever else anyone's heard that caught their interest.
It lets the music remain surprising and interesting. Jazz fusion from Japan is especially interesting, and has been for over 40 years now. Their rock and metal scene, hell even a decent chunk of their mainstream pop music has some very interesting elements to it. Groups like Shonen no Kaze who fuse reggae, hip-hop, hard-rock, and a sort of frantic dance energy, or Sukima Switch who are like Chicago (with the accompanying 80's period, sadly, but we can't all be perfect), and so many more artists.
Got to love some Masayoshi Takanaka.

Oh, it’s fun to see you learning about anime. You may be interested in looking at some scenes from Your Lie in April, which is an anime about a young piano prodigy returning to classical music competition two years after he had a mental breakdown and stopped performing. I thought it was really cool how that show highlighted the expressiveness and emotional tone of the musical performances, which reflected the characters’ mental states, whether free and playful, stiff and constrained, or beginning to panic and lose it. The animation is also really beautiful.

Well, in the not so well known pile there's this song called Kyoumen no nami, is the opening song, for an anime called Land of the lustrous, its a great song, but what made it popular was the sheer amount of complexity present, there's this guy on TH-cam that transcribes songs and documented his 50 hours descent into madness that was transcribing this one piece, plus, the song still makes me shed a tear
JoJos is inherently tied to prog. There are an insane amount of references in character names; Tarkus, Bruford, King Crimson & Epitaph, 'Dan of Steel', Weather Report, etc.
It's a shame so many of the names had to be converted in the English dubs for legal reasons, because most of them are somehow references to the authors favorite bands.

I hugely recommend listening to music from Cowboy Bebop (esp. "Tank," the main title music) and the scores to the original Ghost in the Shell and Paprika.
Be it games or anime, I'm gonna keep suggesting the Hollow Knight OST. Lots of great serene tracks in there that warrant your analysis!!

If you really liked this, JoJo's bizarre adventure went on to influence and inspire many things including "Persona", and persona 5 is the newest entry with arguably the best sound track courtesy of Shoji meguro. I highly recommend the tracks "wake up get up get up there", "layer cake" , "when mother was there", "the whims of fate" and"rivers in the desert " its such incredible music and offers so much. Happy listening!!

It was so cool seeing this pop up as the first recommended video on youtube for me. Getting another reaction for other great composers known for their anime work like Shiro Sagisu and Hiroyuki Suwano would be so awesome! Any of the pieces from the Evangelion OST, such as Fate, The Wrath of God in All its Fury, or this is the dream (my personal favorite) would be incredible to listen to your expert analysis of.

Bands that play for anime scores play their hearts out. It's seen as very prestigious over there and God bless them for it.
This is my first time seeing your channel and wow! I'm really impressed by the research you did before this. One big thing about the anime industry is that most anime are adaptations of manga (Japanese equivalent to comic books). The most popular anime come from manga published in Shonen Jump (shonen meaning young boy, these stories are targetted towards teenagers mainly but can be enjoyed by anybody). Many of the most popular anime are extremely faithful to the source manga, going so far as to basically animate panel by panel bringing the pages to life with movement as well as the music and voice acting, which is a contributing factor to why anime is more focused on detail than movement (although there is still plenty of beautiful animation to be seen in the genre for sure, the lastest arc of One Piece comes to mind). JoJo's Bizarre Adventure probably goes the furthest out of most popular anime when it comes to being faithful to the manga. The show runners obviously have great love for the original manga series because it shows in the anime.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is an anthology spanning over 100+ years from the 1880s to 2011. Each part takes place in a different era along this timeline and follows a new protagonist each time. Each protagonist is a descendant from the protagonist of the first part, and the plot of each part is set into motion thanks to the actions of the first parts antagonist, that's the connecting link between all of these stories. The series is entirely defined by the word "bizarre". I like to compare it to an over the top stage play the way that it carries itself. The original manga author, Hirohiko Araki is a massive fan of western music and so many characters names are inspired by artists and albums and whatnot. For instance the main antagonist of part 4, Yoshikage Kira, whose design is based on David Bowie, and he wields a set of powers called Killer Queen, Sheer Heart Attack, and Bites the Dust. There is also quartet of villains in part 2 named Santana, Kars (The Cars), Esidisi (ACDC), and Wamuu (Wham). Most characters contain some sort of musical reference. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is probably my favorite anime I really love it a lot.
Oshi no Ko is seriously such a crazy phenomenon, it's been wild to see how rapidly it's grown thanks to the recent anime adaptation. Oshi no Ko is basically a commentary on the dark underbelly of the whole entertainment industry in Japan, but there's also another aspect to the plot which I wont spoil incase you watch it. I don't have too much to say about it other than the first episode is a movie length episode and it's one of the best hooks to a series I've ever seen. The song from it that you mentioned is the opening theme and it's a full blown J-pop bop with lyrics that represent the messages and themeing of the show, it's a masterpiece and YOASOBI is an incredible musical duo.
In my opinion if you want to watch an anime for the first time, you've gotta go with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and most people would say the same. First of all, the story is complete, and the whole show rounds out at about 60 episodes so it's not a complete mammoth to get through. A lot of anime tropes can also be pretty jarring but this show definently eases you in on that front. The plot is basically a military drama/mystery with a coming of age story mixed in, and the story is really something special. Huge vouch for that show. One thing to note is that there's 2 adaptations of Fullmetal Alchemist. I recommend you watch the one titled Brotherhood because it's the most faithful to the manga. The other one actually started airing around the same time as the manga was being released but it actually ended up outpacing the release of the manga so the story of the anime diverges from the manga. But Brotherhood is pretty much panel for panel the same as the manga with few exceptions.

A composer I would recommend is Kajiura Yuki. She's done a bunch of music for various anime and games since the 90s.
Absolutely iconic theme. This is the theme of the character Giorno and it usually plays when he is about to do something really cool and crazy against Literal impossible odds and it's always hype and comes at you at perfect moments.
The show is also really good and extremely creative! (Understatement) Also all the music is absolutely phenomenal
I came here from watching your Opeth videos! It's funny since JoJo's Bizarre Adventure was the show that introduced me to progressive rock with Roundabout being used at the first end credits to the show. My music taste has greatly evolved thanks to exposing myself to this media so it's cool to see someone else come at it from the opposite angle as I notice your "Close to the Edge" album on the wall there. Another interesting fact is that in the beginning of the third opening for Diamond is Unbreakable (which is the part before Golden Wind), they use the Close to the Edge font for the credits! The author loves classic rock and names a lot of his characters after bands/musicians (I remember 4 throwaway villains near the beginning of the show named Plant, Bonham, Jones, and Page lol)

The Neon Genesis Evangelion theme is iconic and is a must. Would also love for you to check out the Main Theme and Rising Fighting Spirit from Naruto though. The Naruto soundtrack is a fantastic fusion of hard rock, martial arts shouts, and traditional Japanese instrumentation (Shamisen, Shakuhachi etc.)
Many others mentioned Cowboy Bebop. As only a casual fan of anime in the early 2000's Bebop reruns on Adult Swim ignited my interest because of the music. Every episode has a musical theme ranging from blues, samba and solo pieces to heavy metal. The opening theme and closing theme of the TV show are masterpieces. The movie has some excellent songs too: Gotta Knock A Little Harder has a gospel style I think you would enjoy.
Omg the shaker actually fit in so well with the beat, I am always amazed by how people like yourself can just think on their feet so quickly and add more flare to an already good sounding song.

All JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Attack on Titan openings are a must listen to in my opinion, also Cowboy Bebop opening song called Tank! is a huge classic, even in USA culture e.g. musical competitions.
It would be fun if you took a listen to KICK BACK by Kenshi Yonezu. It's quite unique and very good (In my opinion), Yonezu really knows what he's doing. It's also the opening theme to the Chainsaw man anime, which is also very good.

Great to see this here, there's a lot of great music to be found in anime. In particular I'd recommend the soundtrack to Revolutionary Girl Utena, especially the battle themes composed by the legendary J. A. Seazer. It's a sort of apocalyptic rock opera music. Perhaps check out Tainai Tokei Toshi Oruroi, it's a really epic track.
My favourite soundtrack in probably in any series is from made in abyss. Highly recommend gravity, hanazeve caradinha and old stories
I would highly recommend the opening of Land of the Lustrous or Houseki no Kuni in Japanese. It's a beautiful that makes great use of polyrhythms.

Oh, this is gorgeous, I am not even joking, I watched all of JoJo just because of this song and when I first heard it, no joke, I spent about 5 weeks listening to it on repeat throughout my whole day, I absolutely adore this song and I cannot get enough of it. 🔥
My favourite anime OST (official soundtrack) probably belongs to Haibane Renmei, a lesser-known series from the early 2000s that only lasted one season at 13 episodes, with strong emotional and spiritual themes to it, and the music is largely composed by Ko Otani, who's also done a bit of video game music, taking a lot of influence from acoustic instrumental Celtic, folk, avant-garde and jazz music. A totally unique experience that's really cool regardless of your taste for anime or music. That said, it's also very different from the "typical" anime soundtrack music.

@@L_O_V_E_L_A_I_N not only that, but I think, having watched Doug's content for years now, that it'll tick a lot of his boxes for what he enjoys in music. It's very experimental, but rooted in familiarity.
To be honest, I'm not even all that huge into anime, but I'll hold up Haibane Renmei as one of the peak achievements in the art form. For me, it is to anime what a lot of great concept albums are to rock.
The opening theme for Ghost Hunt is pretty cool. Shiki has one particular leitmotif, I think. FMA has great music. I like the music for the anime “Another,” and for Demon Slayer (“Butterfly Dance ~ Play” is very good). You need to react to “L’s Theme” and “Himitsu” from Death Note at some point. I’m very curious what you’d think of “From the Precipice of Defeat,” both the old and new versions, from Bleach.
Also: the main theme from Paranormasight. It’s not an anime, it’s a video game.

As a fan of classic anime, I would emphatically suggest Tank! (yes, the exclamation point is included) from Cowboy Bebop. It's considered one of the most iconic and distinctive opening themes in the realm of anime fandom as well as an absolute banger. It's one of the few anime openings that I never skip.

But then again, might be too long, but, there's a viseo containing all of Jojo's openings, which are 12 in total (but in the opening clips of the episodes they last only 1m30sec each;

Il vento d'oro is probably the most involving JoJo theme, but I would suggest the Diamond is Unbreakable from JoJo as well (Josuke's heme, my favorite character). If you want to listen and review some video game music I would suggest the OST from Undertale. This game is a masterpiece! I'm sure you'd love it!
One of the highlights of JoJo is these character themes, the beat down track. Seeing the bad guy get pummeled as theses tunes jam is *chefs kiss* 👌

Please check out Yutaka Yamada's work for Vinland Saga. It's my personal favourite OST and brings out so much emotion. I recommend Somewhere Not Here and Arnheids Theme, both beautiful tracks which can show just a glimpse into what OST's can bring and how important they are to the medium.

If you're gonna dive more into anime music, I HIGHLY recommend "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's an absolute classic from one of the most influential anime of all time.

Japanese music preserves the soul of jazz. You can hear bits of jazz elements in many J-Pop, and definitely J-Rock.
Japanese Jazz Fusion is the best form of Jazz Fusion in my opinion. (Try Casiopea and T-Square)
Definitely hope you do some more anime and video game music. There are SO many composers out there that don't get the recognition they deserve for their amazing work

As a long-time anime fan I have to recommend basically anything by Susumu Hirasawa, specifically the music he made for the anime directed by the late Satoshi Kon. I'm a little too drunk right now to make a specific rec, but it's a real "take your pick" kinda situation. Also, his score for the adaptation of Berserk from the 90s is also fantastic.
Each phrase is like a solo of one instrument, then put everything all together at the end.
