Needed to replace my steering gear box on my 80 camaro, bought a new Borgeson gear box thru Jegs, the customer service person recommendation was to go new vs rebuilt. Watched this video, did as described through out the video, took no more than 2 hours which included a trip to buy the 1 5/16 wrench to take the pitman nut off, not enough leverage on my crescent wrench. Took it for a test drive 5 miles, it fixed my steering twitching problem, and no other problems. Thank you Borgeson! And thank you Klowney
Finally got around to replacing the (original) gearbox in my '80 Monte. Your tips helped a lot. That damn steering (telescoping) shaft though - what a bitch. 38 years of rust and junk will do that I guess. I literally had to remove mine completely from the top knuckle. Then, after hours of lube and some forceful banging, pushing and tugging, it finally broke loose. Appreciate the help.
As soon as the weather permits, I'm going to replace the Steering Gearbox on my 82' Trans Am (KITT). The Box is leaking horribly! Thanks for sharing this video, Klowny!!
Man, I am so glad I found your video. I need to change the gear box on my '80 Monte, so this was perfect timing and really gives me an idea of what I'm up against. Looks identical. Thanks for posting.
I just rebuilt the front end of my 1990 Chevy k1500 did the gearbox too! it's still pretty much like those older 1970s and 80s models except there's not room for a pitman arm puller because the way the frame is designed so you have to remove the gearbox to do pitman arm iam sure you've done those 90s model chevy 4wds before! lol great video i wish when i did mine i would have watched this video because I like the method you used to tap the rag joint coupling on the gearbox we had a time get that on but you always learn something new!
awesome!!! Thanks for walking me through this like I was a four year old. That's how I understand things, and you did it very well!!! now I hope this works that easy on my 79 Regal
Great job explaining steering box replacement. I am about to put a rebuilt one on my 70 chevelle. My old one was leaking horribly out of the top seal where steering rod connected. Never seen one do that. Thanks for help.
Great Video. Im following along in the garage, my pitman arm nut will not budge, not with breaker bar, heat, pb blaster ext. isn't just rotating off like the video.
I'm here because I have a leak at the low pressure connecter on the gearbox. This is pre-existing. (Just got a 1979 Firebird Formula and noticed fluid on the garage floor.)the connection seems very tight and I'm wondering (hoping) if it is more likely to be the hose than the gearbox. This video has already helped me figure out how I'm going to get the hose off with the flared crows foot wrench, so thanks! any thoughts appreciated.
Awesome vid. I'll be doing this soon to my 79 z28 project car once it comes back from the muffler shop. Probably gonna have to do the pump and lines as well. The whole PS system is a leaky squealing mess every time I turn
klowny1969 hey klowny i succesfully swapped in the manual gearbox and with some 255/60r15 tires in the front and rear its not too hard to turn at all. Problem is my steering coupler is toast and i cant do alignment with this much play in it. I know it uncouples from the gear box shaft side via the the bolt you showed in the video (where the splines are on the gearbox input shaft), but how do you disconnect it from the intermediate steering shaft?
@@klowny1969 thank you for all your help bro....I'm about almost done, but do you happen to know the nut size at the bottom..I read that it might be a 1 5/16?
Great Videos - Keep'em coming. Hey if your in the NY area, I would love to have you work on my 66' Lemans. Needs all front end steering and suspension replaced.
As instructed in the video, make sure you completely remove the bolt clamp holding the steering column to the gear box. If you just loosen it (like I did), it will not come out and you will "hate your life". Thanks for posting!
Great video!!!, I have a 1971 Chev El Camino pro street and the issue I having is I got more steering to the left than the right. So I'm thinking the gearbox was set up wrong from the previous owner.
+klowny1969 hey klowny just did my 79 firebird which I'm cloning to a T/A. No problems I thought but I must of done something wrong because my steering wheel (which isn't a TA wheel ) is off center a bit. I plan to replace with a TA wheel. All the front suspension parts are going to be replaced as well. Any suggestions that might tell me what I did wrong. This car sat for many years before I got it so it is nasty under it.
68 Chevy Truck 327 -Purchased a complete conversion kit from Brothers Trucks but it didn't come with any instructions. This video showed me a few things that I never would have considered. Any tips on the brackets or positioning of the pump?
Hey Klowney, I got a new steering box and it came with 2 new o rings, do those go on the pressure line and return line as I then screw them into the steering box or do you insert them in the inlets of the steering box?
It's important to mention there are no bolts or fittings on these cars that are Metric, you can get by using the sizes mentioned in the video, but you can strip out the flare fittings easily
Hey man! I'm looking to get a stock style gearbox for my 79 camaro, is there any differences when choosing? I've seen some say 2-3 turns others with 3-4, need help figuring out what kind I have on my car currently
If the pitman arm nut was that easy to take off with the flick of a wrist and an adjustable wrench then it was been unsafe to drive for a long time or it was pre-loosened off video. I have done many steering gear box replacements and never have I had one come off this easy. Usually need at least a breaker bar or impact and in some cases never got it separated and just picked up a new pitman arm with the gear box.
@@klowny1969 Nope...just a quarter turn with an adjustable is all I saw. No worries. Just letting others that might want to attempt this that it is rarely as easy as it seems on a video.
can I re-center the new steering box after it's been installed? I really don't want to remove it, my budding "mechanic: did not center it : ( I can tell is a little off - Thanks
My american willies jeep 1967 having manual steering gear box.from long time i buy this jeep i can turn full only one side (up to tire touches the body.)But other side can turn only half only.So for turn other side i have to from and back the jeep 2-3 times.Where is the problem? How can i fix the problem. Please help me..Thanks.
Your steering box is not aligned properly, take off the pitman arm, and get the wheels straight, as well as the steering box, make sure the steering box is centered, then install the pitman arm again etc, also make sure to disconnect the steering column and connect it again when its aligned properly.
yeah if the box ur putting in has a different ratio than what was in there..then the steering wheel will not line up..u can either get an alignment done or take the steering wheel off and put it back on straight..thanks for watching
