    I own a 2014 MDX FWD (I don't live in the snowbelt) and real world MPG is awesome!!! During a 10 hour summer trip I averaged 29 MPG and the car was loaded with 4 adults and 4 bags (about 50 lbs each) and I drove at 70 MPH most of the time. When I drive solo I tend to to get around 32MPG, which is better than my friends' 2.4L and 2.5L smaller crossovers.

    Hi Alex! I just purchased my 2015 Acura MDX AWD with the Technology package two weeks ago. I was coming out of a 2013 Lexus RX 350 AWD that unfortunately was totaled in an accident. I loved the Lexus but I've found the ride of the MDX to be even smoother and that in addition to the added space and comparable price swayed me to the Acura.

    Alex, thanks for your reviews man, I have checked almost all the available reviews on youtube and elsewehre and only your was the one that helped me make up my mind. I was split between this and a used X5. your are spot on with the driving dynamics between X5 and MDX. almost similar. Also your prediction about the MDX's braking, I dont like it too althought I did buy it.. Thanks and keep up the excellent work.. God Bless you Man!!!

    Great review!
    We just bought the 2016 SH-AWD (We also owned the 2014 model unfortunately it was involved in an accident where it was totaled). We were contemplating on buying the all new Honda Pilot but decided to go with the Acura instead. We were able to get -4k of the msrp if anyone is interested.
    I'm enjoying the 9 speed transmission a lot. The ride seems pretty smooth and gear shifts aren't noticeable. The handling with the SH-AWD is great in the turns in higher speeds. The interior and trunk space is great for my kids. My only complaint is the push button shifter. I guess it's something to get used to.

    Great review of a fantastic vehicle! I just purchased, about 3 weeks ago, a 2015 Acura MDX SH-AWD with Technology Package and love it! One thing you didn't get quite right in your review is the towing capacity. With SH-AWD and the transmission cooler added, tour towing capacity is increased to 5000 pounds.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is kind of a hair splitting area. Acura says that the 5,000lb rating is only when the dealer installed accessory is added. Rolling out of the factory no MDX has a tow rating of 5,000lbs but with the dealer installed tow package it will end up at 5,000. I resist commenting on dealer installed accessories (like the MDX fog lamps incidentally) because the take rate is so low and many people choose aftermarket hitches that would not support a 5,000lb tow rating. There is a note in the video when it comes to that section about that. Congrats on the new car!

      Not sure if you'll see this reply as I know this was an old comment, but can I ask how you like/liked your 2015 Acura MDX? I'm looking into purchasing a used SUV and am currently between the Acura MDX and the Infiniti QX60, so trying to see how those who've owned one for a few years feel about them now.

    Very professional Alex, you're very knowledgeable, you do your job well and I feel like you're mot given enough credit or have enough subscribers for how good of a reviewer you are. You take what saabkyle04 and 2theredline do and put your spin on it which works perfectly. A lot of people complain because kyle doesn't drive the vehicle so much he just does walk arounds and sofyan doesn't go as in depth as kyle in terms of the interior or exterior but he takes the cars on test drives. You however take that and make it the best of both worlds. I feel you're understated as a youtuber and deserve more recognition but anyways, keep up the good work my friend!

    For clarification to my earlier post, I'm talking about the SH-AWD version of the Acura, which is just barely quick enough for me to consider. I'd prefer quite a bit quicker vehicle (e.g., the Explorer Sport, possibly chipped) but not if I have to accept bad NVH and/or reliability as the price. Great reviews...you are the best on TH-cam...and thanks!

    A most impressive review. The only topic you didn't cover which is important to me is reliability. I, too, have a 2003 MDX with that 5 speed transmission that went bad. Honda paid for the repair which garnered my loyalty. Aside from that the MDX has 150k on it and it has never failed me. My BMW sedan, not so much and by extension I'm not sure the X5 is rock solid either.. Understand you're talking about new models hence there is no track record but your comment to Jean below is valuable to know and would be good to hear in these reviews. Again, excellent review.

    Does acura still use those ADS shocks still? They are great when they work but aren't very durable in colder climates, thus fail prematurely and are crazy expensive to replace.

  • @stanpowers600
    @stanpowers600 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Alex,
    I have a 2011 MDX and am considering a second SH-AWD MDX or an AWD RDX. I was thinking about the RDX as it should be nimbler and I don’t need the 3rd row. But am bit disappointed that Acura 86’d the SH-AWD. To have SH-AWD is to love SH-AWD!
    I know the newer MDX has been lightened up a bit over the 2011 and I’ll drive both.
    But as you have driven both extensively, which is your pick for ‘overall’ better handling car?
    Does the lighter weight of the RDX despite lack of SH-AWD provide a ‘sportier’, for lack of a better descriptor, feel over the MDX?
    Thanks - BTW, you have the hands down best, informative and balanced reviews of any I have seen. Keep up the great work!

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say that in many ways the MDX drives smaller than the RDX because of the torque vectoring rear axle. That coupled with the RDX not being too much lighter than the MDX means the MDX still has the dynamic lead.

    Hi Alex, I found your Acura MDX 2015 video very informative. I am currently thinking of buying either a 2015 MDX or ML 350. I am wondering if you heard of problems with the MDX transmission? I use to own a 2003 MDX which was very reliable, with no issues, until I had a costly transmission problem. I have heard that this is common issue with the MDX model. I usually keep cars for a long time and was concerned if I would have to trade in the car in 6 years in order to avoid a potential transmission problem. Can you comment on that? Thanks.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that there were some issues with the Honda/Acura 5-Speed automatic several years ago, but so far the 6-speed that they are using in the MDX and other models has been reliable.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      garfvk garf I'm not a huge fan of the Enclave. It's getting a little old and for what you get it's a little expensive. I think that the Buick really competes more with the Honda Pilot Elite in terms of overall refinement with the MDX being a notch above. The MDX handles considerably better because the Buick is quite heavy.

  • @RayStendall
    @RayStendall 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Alex, I have heard the MDX had some issues with loud engine noises in the 2014 model. What's your take on this? Some have attributed this to direct injection, but am not convinced this is the sole source. Anyone else have this problem?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DI engines are going to have a specific sound to them without a doubt. However I think that some of the issues have related to the cylinder deactivation system and/or the active engine mounts. I have never experienced an issue but Acura does say that they have made some changes to help correct the cause of some of the complaints. They did not however say what those changes were.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends more on the design of the lamp module than the type of light source. So you can have an LED that is brighter or dinner than an HID.

  • @Fussinated
    @Fussinated 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you Alex for the good review. I would call it a good review alone by your comment over the two tone dashboard. In the 90's all black dashboards was something car magazine reviewers liked to despise. Suddenly Europeans started to apply such design the very same magazines started to praise that design. Maybe new generation kids are not aware of this double standarded approach but the worst source to gather information about cars are those car magazines.
    Design shapes and colors, are a matter of taste, of course. However if the same person says two different things about the same design depending on the brand that they carry, it is a whole different issue.
    Also, I remember that there were rumors about car makers sending special production cars to be tested and the real production cars were falling short of those tests. Obviously everyone was not aware that those testers of car magazines could have been the culprit of this discrepancy. Today, most of those car magazines were bought by multi national corporations. If their approach was biased back then, I find it hard to believe whatever they say about a car now, even if it is true.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide

      I would probably go for the ML. The MDX is a great value but if value isn't the primary concern the ML has a nicer interior, more comfortable seats and although it lacks the torque vectoring rear axle it has a better weight balance than the MDX.

    Hi Alex, I'd like to hear your opinion about VCM issues on late V6 Honda Engines (oil consumption, vibration,fuel consumption) that I read from the odyssey forum, honda has extended warranty for compensation. Thank you.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never experienced a problem personally, however Acura has said that there were changes made to the 2014 model year vehicles to address complains. In general the reliability researchers I have spoken with tell me that this is not a common problem. Unfortunately it is hard to be 100% sure, but I tend to agree with the reliability research folks because forums do tend to collect people that are having a problem and it can make it seem like it is a pervasive issue. Personally, if it were me shopping, I would rather have the VCM and deal with a minor vibration from time to time than not have the fuel saving tech.

    What are your thoughts on it's sister vehicle, the retired Acura ZDX? With a tad more hp/torque, and I believe an earlier application of the 6 sp transmission, and decent cargo, I thought it was an interesting alternative to traditional boxy crossovers. And the Acura "beak" grille made the ZDX's shape look more like a bird's head. Do you plan on reviewing other "Coupe UVs" like the BMW X6 and the Honda Crosstour? I found your review of the X6 on the TTAC site, but none for the Crosstour or ZDX. Thanks again.

      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really never liked the ZDX. I do have an X6 review on here somewhere I believe. The ZDX was just too expensive and to much of a compromise for me. On the used market it may be a better deal but I was left unimpressed. I haven't driven teh Crosstour however, so I can't really comment. Because of its slow sales I don't really have it on my list at this time.

      @cadsux 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. From reading the closing remarks of your written review of the X6M, I had a feeling you wouldn't be thrilled by the ZDX, but in your video review, you appeared to have loads of fun with the X6M. The Crosstour is more like a comfortable touring vehicle, as opposed to sporty. It's basically a full size Accord with a quieter and more spacious cabin, plus AWD. I guess Acura isn't about to give Accords that feature.

    Hi Alex, stuck between the MDX, QX60 or upcoming XC90. What are your thoughts on best family vehicle?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would get the XC90 if you are willing to go that high. It is likely that the XC90 will be 10K more than the outgoing model and notably more than the MDX or QX60. After that it would depend on what you're after. The XC60 has a better ride and a more luxurious interior, but the MDX handles better hands down.

    Alex... I am little confused if I am have to go for a Brand New Acura MDX or Brand New ML 350 or a pre-owned BMW X5. Can you please suggest me. My price range is 50-55K.

    I am thinking about buying an MDX. Do you think it is worth it to wait for the 2016 model? Taking in consideration that you will probably get better price deals on the 2015?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edgar Arceo Personally I would get the 2016 for the better fuel economy. You may not ever save the difference but you'll save a reasonable amount if you keep it a while.

      Alex on Autos According to Acura, the 2016 drops 1 mpg - even though they claim that new nine-speed automatic is 66 pounds lighter. It will make sense that it will give you a better fuel economy.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you noted the EPA number dropped, but based on my experience in other cars with the ZF 9-speed you should expect real world highway numbers, specially at high speeds to actually improve.

      Edgar Arceo I was in the same boat as you this week and based on the driving experience of 2016 and 2015 I went with 2015. Got a very good deals and I tell u I like having the only 6 gears to navigate while in sports mode. the 9 was shifting too much in city driving and was not at all fun to manually shift. buy a 2015 till they are still available.

    Check the facts on that towing capacity. The 2014 and 2015 MDX will tow up to 5,000 lbs. There are two hitch options to purchase for customers, 3,000 lbs and a 5,000 lb hitch that includes a transmission cooler. There are dealer installed accessories. So the MDX will tow either 3,500 lbs. or 5,000 lbs, just depending on which hitch you have installed.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a tricky one because Acura lists the rating at 3,500lbs from the factory. Factory ratings are all I use in the videos. Many people don't get factory hitches so it is a little tricky to go by that kind of rating.

      Alex on Autos Outstanding review as usual. Really appreciate the details. Its amazing how many minivan and 3 seat SUV "reviews" out there don't even show the 3rd row seat, much less show getting in and out and the amount of leg room back there. We are a family of 5 and that is important to us, thanks.
      Oh, and here is the link for 5,000 lb towing capacity on the Acura website. Click "Drivetrain" tab. Only on MDX SH-AWD version with dealer installed accessory as mentioned by Dan Lee. www.acura.com/DriveTrain.aspx?model=MDX&modelYear=2015

    Hey Alex, I like your reviews more than any other I've seen so far! Have you done side by side reviews between used 2010 Acura MDX vs used 2010 Lexus GX460 or Infiniti QX56? I am confused which one?! I like the MDX external style look. But, I am also more into smooth comfortable unshakable drive! I had RX300 for long time which is gone with major accident 3 months ago and before the RX I had Acura Legand! Plz help me make the right choice, I like quality SUV that lasts, thanks

      Eco has Idle engine stop and Vari Cylinder.
      Comfort has slightly more responsive throttle.
      Sport loses Idle stop and vari cylinder and has even more responsive throttle and more weighted steering.

    Great review yet again. Though I disagree with the styling. Front is nice, but the rest is bland and very "minivan-ish". Last gen had a more chiseled, macho look. Suggestion - to have a total score tally recap at the end of the video.

    my co-worker and i got the 2012 Acura MDX 3 years ago and recently my co-worker upgraded to the new 2015 version. i've been driving his new 2015 MDX around a lot lately and i feel its a significant down grade compare to the 2012 version. in space, comfort, and center controls. when i do drive the 2015 version, i very much miss the cock pit controls from the 2012. the dual screen is nice but everything becomes more of a task to control (like the fan speed, skipping music tracks etc). i understand Acura trying to become more technelogicaly advanced with the digital controls on the screen in replacement of physical buttons however its like trying to operate a tablet like an iPad while driving versus relying on muscle memory to blindly control the things you want to control while driving. while upgrading the technology with this second screen, the could have and should have done a better job with balancing the 2.

    i think that the ground clearance is 7.3 in, but mdx usually has low hanging fruit like the giant muffler so can't take it off-road anyway. I think only RDX can be deemed off road Acura worthy

    Hi Alex, I (think I) need an SUV for utility (tossing a bike in the back, carting two large dogs around, long road trips for a retired couple, etc.) but I really like both quiet luxury and sporty performance. I want both! I think I should rule out European brands as I'm looking to buy used, 1 or 2 years old and keep for 10 years, and I'm worried about maintenance costs so I'm thinking American or Japanese. So oddly, I find the Acura MDX and Ford Explorer Sport to be about the only vehicles that appear to meet my criteria. (Unless I go all the way up to the Jeep GC SRT...expensive!) I'd love to get your take on the Ford Explorer Sport. Any chance of a review (or any feedback you already have)?

    I drive a 2009 and honestly I think Acura's keep on getting more beautiful with every new generation. Still, I test drove a 2015 and I'm not a fan of all of the touch screen and fake woods and leather accenting on the interior. I'll stick to my 6 CD changer, no touchscreen, run of the mill 2009 MDX.

    the acura mdx and rdx are not the most overlooked in their segments. for the a majority of the months that the rdx has been on sale it's been the best selling or near the best selling vehicle in its segment and the mdx keeps pretty close sales with the lexus rx.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The MDX sells well however the RDX's volume in America is less than half of the Lexus RX although this generation has really helped improve the numbers. The SRX, X3 and RX all outsell the RX in the 2-row luxury segment with the RX selling more than the RDX and SRX combined.

  • @ssj4goldengogeta
    @ssj4goldengogeta 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Actually the mdx does offer fog lights. it's an accessory option.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But not from the factory. I don't usually mention dealer installed options because they are expensive and the take rate is low. The cost of adding fog lamps to the MDX seemd to range from $600 to $1000 depending on the dealer. According to Acura they expect well less than 1% of owners to add them.
