Guessing you're drawing a parallel to the German aircraft production rates in 1944-45? Tens of thousands of planes made, and hardly any qualified pilots to fly them (due to attrition and lack of fuel to train more).
That's because the Daimlers and Messerschmidts of this world could always count on some fat German high commander doling out a contract in return for some cheap champagne and a night with a Parisian hooker. It was good business, probably why I'm driving a Mercedes in 2018 😄
The design was mostly abandoned by 1918 and we wanted to talk about realistic concepts. That a prototype was built doesn't mean much because the of the German lack of coherent strategy.
The greatest German tank development in WWI was clearly the Tankgewehr. No meander or indecisiveness, they saw the British tanks and immediately went out and developed the anti-tank rifle as fast as possible.
Also, what would you rather do? Get up close with the tank to throw an explosive at it, or shoot at it with an anti-tank rifle from the distance of a few hundred yeards?
A beautiful interview on some of the German business, engineering, and military "politicing" that went on; which, brought together the random energies to bring to fruition a exotic piece of military hardware (at least exotic at the time)...and the birth of "the tank" humanity seems to have a romantic point of view about. Excellent video, though I'm surprised there was little to no mention of the massive K-Wagen. A vehicle that dwarfed the A7V, with four 77mm guns and if I remember correctly 7 MG 08s. Two prototypes of this 100+ ton behemoth were nearing completion in November 1918, and the tanks were disassembled were they stood in the factory to comply with the terms dictated by the Allies.

Donald Hill Form follows function. A tool or machine designed to preform certain functions, will have a particular look. The reason tanks look like "tanks" is it a design that works.
That is essentially what I said. Tanks started out to address the Battle field as it was in WW1 on the western front but developed to what we have today because the battle field changed beyond the trench line.

Totally agree! France is the obvious next choice. Russia is very interesting: lots of "creative" and often totally mad ideas, some of which were actually constructed (e.g. the CZAR tank).

The Bolsheviks captured many tanks from the White Army and when the Soviet Union was formed, Russia's first tank Corp was founded; they even made their first tank which was a copy of the Renault FT.

It would be brilliant to see actual examples of these drawing board concepts. Perhaps a training programme for apprentices could recreate these vehicles, just to show the lineage.

The Krupp-Protze is a very interesting design, similar to the British Universal Carrier in both the design and the intended application. Shame it never left the prototype stage, as it's a very interesting concept which the Universal Carrier showed had massive potential. At the point of 1917-18, though, it's doubtful that it would have made much of a difference. And who knows, perhaps for the better. The war already lasted much longer than it should have, and caused more misery than anything before.
What about the K Wagen? If i remember correctly. Two of them were almost ready until the germans surrendered. So i really would've liked to have known if they were a good design.
The Germans with the LK series, like the French with their FT, envisioned swarm tactics with their small tanks. "locusts", as Estienne called them, if I remember right. I don't think the British ever truly adopted this sort of doctrine for their Medium designs until Fuller's Plan 1919 was being talked about, and even then they were clearly not employed in this manner by the end of hostilities. The Mark A Whippet surely was not a 'swarm' tank like the LK and FT were. It simply wasn't produced in large enough numbers to be.
