      Mutant Baby I’m curious what this Marshall vertical 212 is in the video because I know the blackstar has 2 celestion seventy 80s in it and I know that Marshall uses celestion seventy 80s in many of their combos and they also sell both a 112 and a vertical 212 that is loaded with seventy 80s. If you want lots of features for cheap, then you should compare them to the Marshall DSL range. A big selling point of this Studio range, whether you care about it or not, is that it's made in Britain which none of the Blackstar amps I checked were; on pics of a HT20 MkII and a more expensive Venue HT Stage 100 MkII, both had "built in China" on their back/bottom plates (DSL range is built in Vietnam, which is why they are around the same price).

    • @theauthenticsteve
      @theauthenticsteve 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No this is just a really bad demo and these guys didn't dig deep enough into the Blackstar. The Blackstar really doesn't have it's own voice, there is so much range and variation in there if you understand how the controls work. This amp could sound like almost any amp you can think of, it is an amp that instead of dictating a voice to you allows you to find your own voice. And the biggest strength of this amp is the clean voices. Sure this amp can go all the way to modern High gain Metal and this amp is identical to the JJN20 so you know it does killer Blues and Rock on the OD side but the clean voices really punch above the price point and IMO this amp makes the new Blackstar Studio 10 EL34 and 6L6 amps redundant by combining an improved version of both in the one head at a much cheaper price.
      In an effort to make it easier to understand. On the OD side the Classic voice is designed to be able to cater for tones that cover the spectrum of pushed amps that fall inside the Classic amp category and the Modern voice is the same again but for the Modern Rock and Metal amps. The ISF control is the key to this as the ISF control changes the EQ in a way that changes the response of the EQ and the nature of the amp. On the British side the EQ behave more like a British EQ and on the US side the EQ behaves more like the EQ of stereotypical US amps. The trick to the ISF is to avoid the middle and the extremes. Sweet spots are usually 9-11 and 1-3. This means the typical demo method of turning one knob at a time will provide poor results especially if all other knobs are left at 12. For example the ISF control can drastically alter the behaviour of the amp except when the EQ (mids in particular) is set at 12 and then the ISF does very little giving the illusion of the amp being much less versatile than it is. If you play around with this amp on the OD side you would find the ISF towards the US side behaves a lot like typical US amps, it likes scooped mids and a bit of a V to the EQ, on the British side as you'd expect it behaves British, the amp responds well to pushed mids but also does that scooped British thing if you like that. Over this side the controls like the right side, just not as drastic as a Marshall amp and a more gentle touch gets a bit more out of this amp just because it has so much range of tone packed in it. With experimentation I'm confident you can match almost any tone with it. These guys really seem to have unrealistic expectations. The Marshall is a known entity, it behaves exactly like a JCM800. This HT20 is different and I can only shake my head at someone who spends just a few moments ignorantly tweaking it and then declares it doesn't compare well side by side. Watch multiple other demos of this amp and you'll see the variety of tones it is capable of. Unfortunately no single reviewer does this amp or Blackstar amps in general justice and you really need to watch lots of videos. On the other hand Blackstar really shoot themselves in the foot in the way they release amps and the way they employ Steve to dominate demos. I think what could work best for them is if someone like Steve was overseeing demos by TH-camrs but instead of Steve playing he should stick to tweaking the amp for the person who is testing the amp similar to how Thomas Blug sometimes does. If Steve refrains from picking up the guitar it allows the variety of playing styles to take over so the amp is able to shine. Blackstar amps really never seem to get a fair shake because there really hasn't been this education out there demonstrating just how versatile these amps are with some simple controls and showing how one small change in usage behaviour really opens these amps up and how the single biggest selling point of a Blackstar amp is that they are the ultimate simple/versatile amp. That is they are some of the most versatile amps out there but the versatility is achieved much simpler than other amps.

      @@theauthenticsteve Thanks for the explanation. I've never really understood exactly how the ISF works except the general explanation one side sounds British and the other American. Hey TK, I would take the Marshall in this test, I thought the Blackstar had a bit of ugliness in the distorion characteristics in the amp. I chalk it up to EL84 tubes which I have found I just don't get on very well with. I know both of these amps have the same power tubes but perhaps the Blackstar was showing more power tube tonality. I found this out when I was using a Friedman mini Dirty Shirley with el84's. When I went for high power tube low preamp rock tones, it got too ugly for my tastes, and was ecstatic when my amp with el34s arrived to replace it.

    From Leo: Another good demo, thanks for your work. The Marshall seems to be a one trick pony. It does the Marshall tone great. The Blackstar has more flexibility. Not everyone plays the same tone, at least all the time. Something clean with reverb will always come out ahead in my book, even at matching price. I have a dozen pedals and a couple of processors that can bake grit out of clean, but you cannot make clean and chime out of grit.

      I agree 100% w. your comment.

    • @theauthenticsteve
      @theauthenticsteve 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can't say I agree. The Marshall isn't really a one trick pony. It is a players amp. Just look at the range of recorded tones that have been achieved with JCM800's over the years. Everyone knows a JCM800 can rock and it really can do a variety of Rock but it has been used for Metal and surprisingly actually has a really nice clean tone in it that rarely gets shown off. But the JCM800 like so many single channel amps is a players amp, the type of amp for that guy who likes to and knows how to use his pots on his guitar and the type of amp that is usually paired with an impressive pedal board. I agree with your comment on the versatility of the Blackstar and at the same time disagree with your comment that this was a good demo because the Blackstar is extremely versatile and this demo fails to really demonstrate this because here there seems to be a lack of understanding how to really achieve this versatility and get the most out of this amp.
      On the Clean side the Blackstar has 2 voices, officially one is voiced like a Fender and the other is inspired by a Vox (but has hints of Marshall to my ears). If this was all you got with this amp it would still be a great value because these clean channels are fantastic and punch well above their price point. Typically on the OD side in these HT amps the OD channel design has been a tube design that is pushed by a (pedal style) OD circuit, I imagine that design style carries on in this MK2 design but have not heard that officially. However the OD side of the amp is where the versatility of the amp really comes out. It's also the side where someone who doesn't really understand these amps can really fail to demonstrate or even realise themselves the biggest achievement and selling point of these amps. In MK2 they have taken it to the next level giving you another 2 voices, the Classic and the Modern. Unlike traditional amps that give you a Classic voice and a Modern voice, the Blackstar is more like a modelling amp with the simplest design ever by giving you a range of classic amps and a range of Modern amps with a simple ISF control. Unfortunately this is where people who don't take the small amount of time to understand the controls of the amp really fail to both realise the potential of these amps and to demonstrate that potential. You can't show off this amp with the method of turning one knob at a time. For starters with the EQ (especially mids) at 12 the ISF doesn't really do much because one of the main things the ISF does is alter the mid behaviour, this means the EQ but mids in particular interact with the ISF so different ISF settings will work best with different mid settings. Then because of the range of tone on tap the EQ wont always behave exactly like a different amp and extreme settings are rarely the best and the middle setting for ISF isn't really ideal. ISF on the US side will have the EQ behave more like your stereotypical US amps, if you like scooped US Metal amps you will like the ISF more to the US side and it will react to scooped with a slight V in the same way. ISF on the British side has more of a British response, over this side the amp can tend to like the right side of the dials a bit more but typically responds like the EQ on British amps. The wrong way to use the ISF dial is to turn it all the way British or all the way US. It isn't that extreme settings never work but the sweet spots tend to be closer to 9-11 and 1-3 for ISF settings. But the name Infinite Shape Feature should be a clue that it isn't simply British/US. It covers a broad range of tone and the control effects the EQ response throughout the sweep and this somewhat effects the feel of playing the amp again in a similar way to the difference of playing through various different amps. Similar to the ISF control the EQ responds well to a bit of a softer touch. If you get the ISF and voice in the general JCM800 it is a little foolish to think that putting the controls in exactly the same spot as a JCM800 will provide the same result. The EQ will respond in a similar way but might be a bit more sensitive. And part of this could be a result of the design actually being a tube amp that is pushed by a OD pedal so perhaps better results can be achieved by treating it like a JCM800 with a pedal in front of it. On the OD side the Classic voice will cover the range of classic Rock, Blues and even classic Metal tones while the Modern voice will cover the range of Modern Rock and Metal. Interestingly this HT20 and the Jared James Nichols signature amp are actually exactly the same amp just with different aesthetics and different names for the channels, that is directly from Blackstar, as far as the electronics go the design, components and construction of the 2 amps are identical.

    $1500 bucks is a tough pill to swallow though ( JCM 20 watt)

    I don't think you dialed in the Blackstar very well, Backstar has a level of low end distortion that Marshall can't really create thats if you like the EMG type Heavy Chords, I replaced my HT40 with the NEW HT20R and am amazed at the versatility, esp with an ESPvEC-2 VIPER I think it would blow that Marshall out of the water that sounds like ZZ Top type Rock to me above but to each his own

      I have a marshall and a few smaller blackstars. I love the marshall but it’s a lot more grainy in the distortion which is fun but the blackstar has a tighter and cleaner sound which is very nice too. Plus the low end growl blackstars have is pretty incredible. The marshal is nice but doesn’t get low end like a black star. Marshall is more open but it’s a different thing all together. I find the blackstar is very satisfying . I’d almost want the blackstar tone with my Marshall’s dynamics .

    I m in an apartment , the ht20 allows a sadly neutral but gréât tube sound at low volume , Marshall doesn t . And headphones are possible only with blackstar when children sleep ! I would have loved a jcm sound with those possibilities black star offer .... sadly small Marshall amps either such either are effective at high volume . Hopefully I have my jubilee 100w at my parents house for real crazy sound sometimes but for a practice amp I ended up buying a ht20 combo a couple days ago .... the choice of reason when you have great guitars but being in an apartment and if you wanna avoid numeric kemper - like sounds ....

  • @leonardo.rafael

    I like more the compression and less harsh brights of Blackstar. And the clean tone is amazing. They have a 5 watts model that lets you saturate the tubes at low volume intensity without an attenuator. Maybe if classic guitarrists have known and used this brand in the past, now all of us may try to get one at high prices.

    It’s a trap to think that the Marshall is a one trick pony because it has less knobs than the Blackstar. Those vintage style one channel amp are often really dynamic and react very well to changes of volume, tone, picking and pick up. I’ve played with Tweed amps with only volume and tone (not treble,middle, bass...just tone) control and man the variety of tones you can get out of those amps is surprising. Throw in a couple pedals and your good to go ! Also it’s cool to have a lot of preamp gain like on the Blackstar but when you need to boost your signal for a solo then the preamp act as a limiter and your stuck at the same volume. I like an overdrive -> boost -> amp on the edge of break up setup best for this. So Marshall all the way for me !

    My takeaway having owned a JCM800, JVM, and now a JTM 45, I think the Blackstar is going to be the better choice, by a long shot, for someone in a cover band that covers a wide range of styles that are hard rock oriented, or for an at-home hobbyist . But with its style of gain, it sounds like it would stand a greater chance of getting lost in the mix. It's always the downfall is not cutting through. The Marshall just cuts. It's less versatile, but if you know what you want, the Marshall rules. Plus Marshall has other options that give you great cleans + modern gain and reverb.
    Blackstars are a proven great bang for the buck amp, that happen to sound fantastic.

  • @daw162

    the blackstar sounds like a modeling amp. It sounds like it's got some atmospheric effect or something, but personally, i'm looking for an amp with less of that and more direct and less forgiving. YOu can add that other stuff with a pedal train or in a mix.
    I've had both, but am back to simple amps that do one thing well, except for one - a mesa mark V:25.
    Versatile amps end up being a pain in the ass because they're set where you want for a little bit, and then you have to fiddle with the controls. Too much fiddling and not enough playing.

  • @nevillegreg1
    @nevillegreg1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now this is where if you want that Marshall tone (and logo on your amp) but with more clean head room, the Marshall Origin comes into play at a much lower price. Heavily put down by TH-cam reviewers because it doesn't live up to a genuine plexi tone but put an overdrive pedal in front of it, it's definitely Marshall with the benefit of having good cleans.

    If do you want to get a Marshall sound from a Blackstar; buy a Silverline or ID: Series, choose the super crunch channel, turn your ISF to the British side fully, equip you juicy EL34s as response (TVP in Series models) and enjoy your British punch. Former models of Blackstar digital amps have lower mid-cuts at the British side, so if you have one of them you may want to use the American side to get that punchy tone.

    Marshall amps are "cheap" if you live in the European Union. Americans don't realize that the price for British brands like Marshall and Laney and Vox and Blackstar are jacked up over 100% when they are sold in the U.S. Take the flagship Marshall 410h head. In America is sells for over $3K but in Europe, even after the exchange rate conversion, it can be had for $1100.
    Now, a lot of Americans find this out and they try to order online from Thomann in Germany or Andertons in the U.K. They think they are going to get a Marshall for half price. But then when the amp is shipped it gets flagged by Customs and they have to pay all the import and duty taxes before they can take delivery, which raises the price of the amp to the retail American price.
    The point is don't think a Marshall is better than a Blackstar or whatever because it costs more. In most parts of the world, Marshall is not that expensive. Americans just don't realize they are paying far more than everyone else.

    I don’t know what to say about this video. No AB switch, stayed on the bridge pick up. Volume seemed louder and more trebly on the Marshall but then you went to the full British on the BStar and it sounded very similar. If I was in the market to buy, I’d still be none the wiser but that said I’d go for the Blackstar for the money. I think you could do it a lot better.

    I really wanted to believe in these mini series amps, at least for Marshall. I still think they’re cool for someone playing in a bedroom, but for 4-500 more I just got a big ass JVM head brand new that is much more versatile. It was worth it. These amps are nice, but they don’t sound quite like The big JCM’s. I’ve watched every good video on YT covering them.
