This video explains how side imaging works, what side imaging is showing on your fish finder screen, and the settings I use for side imaging in order to find crappie.

your videos are awesome it has helped me so much thank you
Love your videos going to try that on my garmin have side imaging still the same out of the box
Nice break down! ❤
Great video Davis!
Good video brother, Thanks for sharing that info
Thanks for watching
Sonar is a never ending learning experience I've discovered ,thanks for the help
You're welcome
@@FloppingCrappie Curious,,, Have you Ever used The LED lights for Night Crappie Fishing ???
Yes, for ice fishing. I'm going to try using them in the boat this summer
Love your videos . Trying to get a Fishfinder for my boat never used one before and I am 58 years old and wanting to do some crappy fishing and bluegill fishing don’t know which one to get your videos are helping me understand I have $1000 saved up maybe one day I’ll choose one to operate
I have a few videos talking about the best units under different price ranges on my channel
Davis, absolutely love your videos. Thanks so much for sharing them with us.
Talk to me about the BLACK image behind the boat when using side imaging... How should we interpret what's in the "black space"? Should we visualize those images as if we are looking straight down on the object OR do we have to rotate the image to get a true picture of what's in the black space? Thoughts? Thanks brother. Jeff
Very good info for a beginner like me . I don't have a unit yet but looking at using side scan for finding Scuba targets . Often we have coordinates but need to find the wreck when we arrive at them. The targets are in the 30-80' range in the great lakes. I actually don't fish.
I've had echomap 75SV UHD with gt56 transducer in my cart more than once but no commitment. It's $1349.00 CAD so feels like a big commitment with little knowledge about performance . I see what appears to be the same head unit for half the price on classified ads and 4-$500 less new with the gt54 transducer .
I think I see both of these transducers in this video . Have you ever compared or explained transducer options?
Nice video!
Thanks
I'd love to see something in the future on identifying bait fish vs schools or crappie. Is it just smaller dots vs bigger dots on the screen?
I'll be sure to making a video on this topic
I live in Florida. The lakes i fish are pretty shallow, mostly not more than 10’ deep with a few small areas slightly deeper in some.
There is very little by way of structure in most areas, except lots of shoreline weed beds. Some of those places can be as deep as the main body, but mostly less as for depth. I have a Helix 5 on the 14’ jon boat that i mostly use, with down image but no side image.
I usually use a split screen with regular and down image. I like to single pole along the weeds very slowly using small jigs best. I dont do as well using other methods. And im not a real fan of any type of trolling.
Ive listened to you and others talk about side scan.
Yesterday i went to a local Bass Pro shop to look at new units.
The guy working there was a local bass fisherman who knows the places i fish very well.
Told me he has 2 units on his bass boat, both having side scan.
He then said id be wasting my money by buying a new unit as the water isnt deep enough where i fish to warrant having side imaging.
He also said it wouldnt work for shooting back under the weeds.
I mentioned there not being any docks and he said makes no difference, water isnt deep enough anyway even if there were.
He said look ill sell you one if you want one, but im just telling you like it is for the places you fish as well as most other lakes in this area.
Needless to say i was a bit surprised, which is why im asking you for your opinion.
Side imaging will work in pretty shallow water. I've filmed a few video of using g side imaging in 6ft or less and seeing schools of crappie.
Do you have any problems with motor blocking side scan images
any tips for telling the difference between crappie and brim on Livescope, i have the lvs34 turns out i was casting to brim for like a hour thinking they were crappie.. XD but they were on brush... do crappie look pretty big on livescope? similar size to feedback from bass?... or..
Depends on the size of the crappie or bream. Typically I've noticed bream will swim faster and be more aggressive towards a bait, where as crappie will slowly rise towards a jig.
How would you set side imaging if your looking at bridge pilings
I would set the distance to 40ft left and right. Or I would set the side imaging to only scan one side.
Ok thanks appreciate you getting back to me ☺️☺️
What software are you using to replay the sonar recordings?
Garmin Active Captain. It is only compatible to record the screen on GPSMAP units.
Do you actually make use of all those tracks on your screen? I ended up turning my tracks off, because the clutter drove me nuts.
I only use the tracks when fishing waters I'm not familiar with. On some of the rivers I use the tracks to avoid sand bars
You didn't keep a Mega Bird for side imaging???
I had a gen 1 helix, NON- mega imaging.
