    WHAT HAPPENED
Helicopter jumps are the best! (And that's coming from the writer who once caught his reserve handle on the skid! - watch that here: bit.ly/3DS6A5f) But on this help jump from ~4,000 feet, this skydiver deployed his main at around 2,500 feet... but nothing happened! Already low, the jumper went straight to his reserve. As his reserve deploys, the main canopy's deployment bag ended up coming down to him - so he grabbed it, then stowed it between his legs. He's in the saddle around 1,900 feet, lands safely, and promptly reports that he owes some beer!
    WHY DID IT HAPPEN
    Bag Lock
The jumper didn't tell us what caused this bag lock. However, generally speaking, there are quite a few factors than can cause one. A lot of them are packing related; for example, long line stows can catch and cinch on each other or an improper stow can get pulled into a grommet. Alternatively, they can happen due to poor gear maintenance, namely, an old worn our pilot chute that should have been replaced a long time ago.
    HOW COULD IT BE PREVENTED
    Attention to Detail
Again, a lot of bag locks result from a lack of diligence during packing, or due to folks not paying attention to basic gear maintenance. Both of these are failures that result from laziness. Keep those line stows short, replace your gear when it's getting worn out, and don't rush your packjobs!
    ADDITIONAL NOTES
    No Cutaway
This video is a bit on the longer side because we wanted to include the discussion the jumper had on the ground with a staff member from the DZ. They chatted about the fact that, rather than cutting away, the jumper went straight to his reserve. Admittedly, he was rather low and every second matters during a high speed malfunction. And at the end of the day, he did a great job saving his own life. However, he was also lucky that the main didn't deploy and entangle itself with the reserve... because that could have definitely been a bad day.

That guy was still getting over the adrenaline rush and the realisation what happened , he didn’t need a debrief whilst still on his gear .
Let him come down so he can then digest what’s happened and absorb what’s being said .

The jumper/packer forgot to reset the kill-line on the pilot shute. You can see the pilot shute is collapsed even though the main havent left the bag. Easiest way to f*** yourself up😅 happy your okay 😊

Wow! Well executed and managed, great job!
At first I thought the bloke who came to help was giving him a lecture until the end you realise he just wanted to give him a compliment for doing such a great job under what could potentially put others in duress.
That jump couldn’t have gone any better under the circumstances…
    Blue skies all
    Much love from Aus ✌🏽

at least he didn't need to search for his main. Sometimes searching for the main could be such a PITA so I could totally understand his willing to risk his life for not doing that

retrieving canopies and free bags in the backcountry can be more dangerous than skydiving ;)

Watching him abandon those toggles and let the Velcro brush up against the reserve lines gives me anxiety! Stow those reserve toggles as soon as you land and get the Velcro covered up to prevent it fighting with your last chance lineset! Easy for me to say I know but I stow my toggles straight after landing on the main just cos I CBA to check the brake lines for twists (that cause tension knots) all the time so its more natural

Cutting away a bag lock or pilot chute in tow is something I think about a lot. Assuming the RSL is connected, If the bag is locked, who’s to say there’s enough tension on the main for it to cut away? If one tried to cut away and the main didn’t release after pulling the handle, they’d have to manually release the three rings; however, due to the fact the RSL is connected, if they manually release the RSL side, it could extract the reserve while the non RSL side is connected, leading to entanglement. So in this case, it worked out because the reserve FORTUNATELY didn’t fire into the lines of the main… and the cutaway handle was never pulled. He deployed the reserve by using the reserve handle attached to a cable which directly extracts the pin.

Heli jump and pulling at 2.5? Make sure you get a damn audible and set it for the jump you're doing. I have two, an audible with beeps and the VOG that speaks the altitude. Instead of waiting to hear beep I'm hearing the altitude coming up and the beeps for pull time and decision altitude. He saved his own life so that's really all that matters!

My pilot doesn't even start to pull my main in the time it took for him to pull his reserve.
Like others have said, it's very likely this was a pilot not doing it's job rather than a bag lock. Either way, I don't see how not cutting away is the better option here.

It was actually an issue with the D Bag that was replaced a couple months earlier at Skydive Elsinore in CA. Baglock.

Yup I cringe thinking I had "valuable fabric" (reserve) over my head by 1,900 feet AGL! In a high-speed malfunction like that I got about 5.6 seconds each 1000 feet. 12 seconds from dead. No time for chop.

WHY DID IT HAPPEN - Bag Lock, are you serious? Before publishing, it is necessary to analyze comprehensively. Why the PC is collapsible? Becouse it's not a Bag Lock!

Why on earth, writer, when you caught your reserve on the skid did you wait so long to let go? That could’ve been a catastrophic helicopter crash, waiting around….the scream when you let go was funny too…probably not to you I bet
