As a manga reader, the anime exceeded my expectations, I always liked how they used the lewd to advance the story or make jokes. i had so much fun watching it, I couldn't stop laughing. Also the VA's did an amazing job. easy 10/10.
I'm actually really glad to see you covering this show. Believe it or not the anime actually ratcheted up how explicit it is by quite a few bars (more detailed fanservice shots, full frontal nudity). This is a choice that I have mixed feelings on as someone who loves the manga (tho they NAILED Utena's expressions) Without spoiling any events, The story actually goes in some really interesting directions, it really becomes less of a magical girl fighting manga and more about a bunch of teenagers sorting out their feelings towards each other in the middle of the sexual comedy and action. Also the designs are kickass and the power-ups are really cool and tied to the girls' development in interesting ways. I'm a fan of the manga and I really didn't expect to be. It's initial appearance might have you totally writing it off, but it's the focus on the girls feelings and them being not just subjects of sexualisation but agents of their own sexuality is what takes it to another level. Kink is also central to the story and how it progresses and it's not just limited to Utena. Kink is more than just an aesthetic element as it might be in lesser series. (And regarding the age thing, we're all adults here. These are characters here, we can still discuss the text of the work as it exists as a piece of art made for adults, without vilifying people who enjoy things we find gross. Also I can't take the age aspect as seriously when this is a manga where men don't exist (even in crowd shots!) and where a villain uses magic which reflects their kinks to fight magical girls) Also I want to give a recommendation for an anime by the name of "Yuri is My Job!" which is all about the facades we put up, sexuality, and lots of drama and flawed teenage characters, it's very well written and you aren't always told directly about character motivations which makes it much more engaging imo.
Also, as somebody who struggled a lot with guilt about my having my kinks, I actually appreciate that the show deals with the themes of understanding your kinks and figuring out ways to enjoy them in a healthy manner. I'm not sure if someone in your chat mentioned it, but I'm like 90% sure that whole scene with Utena waking up, going "Oh, it was a dream" and then Venalita telling her "Good Morning" while sitting between her plushies is a Madoka reference. The scene happens almost beat for beat the same in ep 2 of Madoka.
When I think magical girls, I always think about attachments. Most magical girl media deals with the full range of relationships. I wonder if there would be any internal conflict in Utena Hiirag if she learns her classmate's identities

I do sort of hate how people dismiss a piece of media because it contains themes or things of a sexual nature. Mainly because most I see hating on it are hypocritical at best. Like didn't see anyone complaining the themes in that fifty shades of grey movie adaptation. I think this anime is for those of us who have achieved culture is also absolutely funny as hell. It's giving the best of both worlds while also being a satire and unique take on the magical girl genre. I can't think of many where the main focus is on the bad guy's side well maybe Love after war domination if you count power rangers as magical girls. Oh wow, I never expected to see a 1+ hour reaction of this. I'm a manga reader and the anime being even less censored catched me off-guard. You'll definitely enjoy this, as the characters have more depth than most people would normally think and Utena is seriously a 10/10 protagonist. Also as a weird side note that many will realize after a few episodes, male characters don't exist in this world at all for some reason. I wonder how they even reproduce...

I've got to say, I was impressed by your analysis. I actually spent the first part of your video arguing with myself over whether you had already watched the first episode all the way through, and were giving us your previously prepared analysis, or if you were actually sitting there in real time predicting the entire show based on the description "horny magical girl show" and sbout 5 seconds of the opening. And then, based only on the costumes of the three main villains, you managed to come up with the theme that I think is the main focus of the series, the conflict between shame and pleasure. I watched every trailer I could find, so I was not surprised by either Utena's costume and the twist that she would be a villain, or that she would use a plant to tie up the Tres Magia. I absolutely adore Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and I like deconstructions like Neon Genesis Evangelion, so I expected this to be a sort of sideways deconstruction of the Magical Girl.genre. More of a lighthearted comedy, but I was hoping for some psychological depth to it. So I was expecting a lot of what happened and very much enjoyed the show. In particular, I can see Utena being basically a good hearted person who doesn't want to seriously hurt the magical girls she dominates will also be a theme going along. She's not a typicsl villain, and I think we'll find Tres Magia aren't typical heroes either. I look forward to your analysis of the next episode. about the recognition protection magic, is not all powerful, s quite weak actually, is more like there is a mind fog that prevent to make the connection between the magical girl identity and the civilian identity, but all it needs is someone pointing out the connection and the magic vanish, or if the person is close enough to one identity and interact with both it may be able to make the connection but those situations would practically never happen so it works well enough

It's basically the same like for example, misterio telling everyone peter is spiderman, in conclusion the magical girl and their everyday look don't look the same for them.
