I just can get over how satisfying it is to see an airplane just gliding through the sky! It’s unbelievable and awesome. I love ww2 dogfighters those planes are my favorite and you guys are my absolute biggest inspiration for every second of it!
alex scott Because brushless motors have to be replaced less often and make better use of the battery's juice to turn it into wind. I didn't mean a HUGE brushless motor. Just a little one. My direct experience with brushed motors is in little quads like the Nano QX, and I know they need to be replaced after ~2 flight hours. I'm not sure if that's just because their repsonse slows down too much to fly, or if they are truly roached after that point...but I would imagine letting a brushed motor run all day as a hat fan would wear it out after only a few uses, at most.
Another great Video guys! I really like the fact you guys have fun. I find myself smiling right along with you. That was worth viewing just for the Fire at the end
I can't believe this comment is 3 years old. The content is so much worse nowadays. I would gladly take the content from 3 years ago over the content of today....
It seems like I am the only one who enjoys the new videos as well. The only thing that bothers me is that sometimes they have to make them emotional for no reason
*CLASSIC DAVID!!!* His Battery EXPLODED from a high speed nose dive, Lipo fire 🔥 Raging.... And David is HOLDING it, so he can check how Fast he went!! That's the good stuff right there. Carmine ✈🚂🚙
Honestly I think this is a contender for the best flight test episode of all time. Not only is it the first time we saw the versa wing, but it's also genuinely really funny, and you still kind of get the feeling that its just some friends messing around, trying to make their planes go dumb fast no matter the cost. I'm super happy that these guys have been as successful as they have been, but sometimes I miss the old days.
i really miss the good old days! These episodes with josh josh chad and david were the whole reason i started watching your channel. please do more like these!!!!!!
Search the Flite Test videos for the F22 (originally from RC Groups). It flies like a kite (very floaty and forgiving), but can be a real screamer. I've built several with the 32" wingspan and 2200kv motor. A great beginner plane that's easy to build, with killer looks in the sky.
Would it be possible to put two motors on the Josh's wing? Like a pusher and a puller. I love what David did with the Spitfire design. That really made it look race worthy.
I think it would be cool to make a foam/coroplast hybrid, with the wing being foam and the power pod being the corrugated plastic for durability. I really love the videos and the work you put into them, thanks a lot guys
I like the way you laughed and didn’t panic during the LiPo fire. Word of caution to everyone when a LiPo batt starts to burn it will shoot out a large blue flame as each cell heats up and starts to combust. few seconds after the first cell has finished burning the next cell might flame up and so on until all cells have burnt up. This caught me off grad once at an RC car race track when I thought the fire was out started cleaning up and the next cell ignited shooting out a large flame.
Mine was the same way with the pusher setup. I had a real hard time getting the CG right. I ended up converting to a tractor setup in the end and it was a lot easier. I was able remove about 100 grams of weight by running smaller batteries and removing dead weight in the nose...
I designed and built an RC flying wing as a kid using my own reflex airfoil drawn from scratch. I had a lot more optimism than capability. Amazingly enough, if flew OK UNTIL it stalled, then it would INSTANTLY tuck the nose so far over that it was effectively "flying" upside down and backwards. Never once recovered from one of those, but if you were VERY careful not to let the angle of attack get to high, it flew OK. And it was a real flying wing, not a delta dart, with a pretty high aspect ratio, about 7 or 8:1. Probably I was lucky it flew at all. Oh, and it was also ULTRA CG sensitive, just a BIT to far aft and it was TOTALLY pitch unstable. That first plane was impressively fast. And the vertical performance of that dart was pretty darned awesome too.
The smoke/fire is from the cells short circuiting. You can only spray the outside of the cells not inside where the heat is being generated. While there is still energy in that battery it will continue smoking. Put it under water and it will still smoke.
What we've been using in to combat robot world for putting out lipo fires is CO2 fire extinguishers to get the temp down and slow down the reaction then throw the battery into a bucket of sand. This has a couple of advantages, first off the CO2 fire extinguisher does something vs. an ABC fire extinguisher or even a Class D fire extinguisher. Second the rapid cooling of the pack allows it to be safely removed (hopefully saving some of your electronics)and containing the fire to just the battery
Great stuff, as always! A couple of requests: I'd love to see a serious swappable wing design for an fpv platform (this one showed some very stable flight characteristics!) also, seeing this speed challenge made me think of... Swappable EDF pod?
Tighten the control linkages and / or cut down the elevons (I used to have a killer fast gas Gremlin and at those speeds the elevons would shake unless you angle cut them down.) Fun video.
One of the best episodes. Made me laugh so hard when the Spit went full speed and also when it went up in flames. Still waiting for mine to arrive here
You (or someone) should make a FPV turbine plane!! I've seen some awesome turbine plane videos but they travel so quickly it's almost silly trying to fly them without fpv
Do you guys use mico servos in these high performance planes? I put micros in the Versa I am making but I am concerned. I am using a pretty beefy motor in my Versa.
strengthen wings with pallet strapping... externally a strip either side to make a sandwich will make the wing much stronger.. or build it in by putting strips on top and below the spars... see rcgroups for more info
I know I'm late and this thread prolly isn't read anymore, but what about a stability challenge where you build easy to fly craft and grab someone who has never flown before to launch, fly, and land.
Yes you can extinguish a LiPo fire. Immerse in Salt Water or fully in sand or dirt. Lithium ignites upon contact with oxygen... ie When the pack's integrity is compromised. With my experience with Wings, being so CG critical, it is better to be nose heavy than tail heavy.
Hey FlightTest, I absolutely love your videos. I guess I've watched almost all so far and I keep looking forward for more every week. That being said you guys have mentioned in a couple of videos (this one also) that if we wanted plans you would work towards making them if possible, so is it possible for you guys to make a F-14 with variable swept wings? I can easily say that the F-14 is easily in my top 5 of fav airplanes. Thanks in advance. Cheers from India. :)
I admire most the videos of stately and ungainly aircraft alike loafing through the air. I'll put in another plug for the B-52 you fellows inherited a while back.
Hey guy's, I know this is a little off the topic of this video but my grandson was glued to the TV watching your TH-cam channel just because of the bullet bill that you made fly, so one of his other TH-cam heroes is Ryan from Ryan's toy review . Now Ryan has these eggs that are stuffed with mystery toy's , he's also a You Tube sensation, I thought I wonder how many views you would all get if you took one of his flying saucers from an egg and put some wings on it!..... When I am watching him on the weekends, we try to get outside as much as possible. I love airplanes and so does my grandson, we go to every show at our local airport. We trade off watching Flite test and Ryan and yes I have just recently purchased some of your flite test products.. Keep up the good work it Awesome !
I destroyed my Versa, but today I made a new one, Versa II. I set it up as a pusher again. I cut the back about 2" so I could mount the motor closer to the CG. But I also moved the battery compartment back to protect the battery. Versa I dented up two lipos. Anyway I still have to add nose weight, moving the battery counteracted moving the motor. Versa II I put a slight dihedral instead of having it board flat. Versa I was a hand full.
I have seen many aircraft on your show, I love it.. However I have not seen any mention of a catalog of airplane kits! Do you have a catalog or a specific sales site??
what motor and esc did you use on the spitfire i built a spit fire and am trying to get it over 100mph and have already reinforced the wings with carbon spar epoxy and like 5 layers of tape
I just thought about this today. The biggest problem would probably be the one heavy motor and that you only have one servo. You could build a 2 channel plane with differential thrust and a rudder but in this case you need 2 motors. It would however be great to see what flitetest comes up with🤔😅
What would happen if you took two (or more) identical planes working off the same controller at the same time? Would they crash into each other? Would they fly in formation? would it become confusing as they separate slightly with each input and speed change?
Kite makers use some carbon fiber tubes now in their construction. I think using those tubes as wing reinforcement would work. They come in different sizes and they are very light. well.
If You've seen a smile in my message, I was half serious. The serious half is, when You are on a field, crashed You plane bad way and see a smoke, can You do anything about it really? %) Pull the pack out of a plane and not burn Your hands? Bucket of salt water would be handy for sure... Concerning wings, yes, noseheavy wing lasts longer than a tailheavy. But there might be some optimal CG position giving more speed with a sufficient stability. It's just 8 mph needed to beat SuperSpit record :)
Do a forward swept wing design challenge. Forward swept wing is great for slow speeds, very agile, and great for high speed if you use gyros. If interested, I have a forward swept wing design you can use.
Ok I am feeling better. I put in Radio Shack miros and I am going to make control horns out of popsicle sticks too. One issue I have is I made the battery cut out very close to the nose so there is about 1/2 inch of battery sticking out in the front, and about 1/4 inch in the back. I will try and make a skid that goes over the battery so it doesn't hit the ground on landings. I still had to epoxy in 2oz of shot to the nose to balance the plane.
How about the slowest (of your own design) airspeed possible without stalling?
Yesssss
@Ben Neptun ?
@Ben Neptun get off of your mom's iPad lmao 😂
The buskwacker would have this

They should make a kit for David's "Cool Hat" and sell it. No joke, dead serious, I would buy that.
LightningFast Rc I'd buy at least two. Though I'd prefer mine to have a brushless motor :)
unixrevolution Why? So your head rips off and flies around until the battery dies?
alex scott Because brushless motors have to be replaced less often and make better use of the battery's juice to turn it into wind. I didn't mean a HUGE brushless motor. Just a little one.

I want to see...a flying SPOON

I think you could get lift with the curvy part of the spoon, and the handle could be the tail
nabzim wings would be necessary. not a problem with aerodynamics, just not enough lift.
Wtf🤣🤣🤣

Hey Flitetest,
I'd like to see a video on the slowest plane possible. Maybe something with huge wings for a ton of lift or something.

Search the Flite Test videos for the F22 (originally from RC Groups). It flies like a kite (very floaty and forgiving), but can be a real screamer. I've built several with the 32" wingspan and 2200kv motor. A great beginner plane that's easy to build, with killer looks in the sky.

please revisit the speed challenge with single blade props..yes that'd a real thing.
I'd love to see those big motors on the FT Cruiser.
I was not saying make just a pusher or puller but incorporate both into one plane. The Dornier Do 335 from WW2 had engines in front and back.
With the same engine and power source, it came down to drag. Josh's plane had a long wingspan, while David's was short.
I designed and built an RC flying wing as a kid using my own reflex airfoil drawn from scratch. I had a lot more optimism than capability. Amazingly enough, if flew OK UNTIL it stalled, then it would INSTANTLY tuck the nose so far over that it was effectively "flying" upside down and backwards. could you do a flying wing biplane?
