We are saying good night as a greeting. We make sure that's the first cause we can't forget. It's a bad habit our parent and grandparents beat into us! You dare not forget to say good morning, good afternoon or goodnight when we pass people in our community. If not, our parents would hear about it. And we will never forget to tell Miss Janet good night when we pass them in the road.

The greeting good night (meaning hello, good night or goodbye on leaving) is the same as good morning, good afternoon, good evening (hello and you can use these as goodbye too). We don't say that these are strange. So why is good night surreal? It's appropriate for the time of day. The French says bon soir (good night or hello) in the same way.
I get it, darling and it makes perfect sense, just as you have explained. It is the culture here and many other places. It's only strange to me because we have a different greeting for that. We say Good evening upon meeting someone (at night) but will only say Goodnight as Goodbye. Bon Soir, as I recall is Good evening and Bon nuit for Goodnight. Except, they interchange it. LOL

We say good night once it is dark. When darkness sets in we don't see it as evening. We see it as night. Hence "good night" when it's dark.

Another reason for the delay with a newborn is for sanitation reasons.
In my day it takes about two months before a mother shows her baby or comes out with her baby.
Two months gives her time to heal and time to bond with the baby.
And most of all that germs from outside, meaning people carrying germs, ( no disrespect). But it is done out of respect.

I appreciate your honesty I was born in St George l Grenada I live in the United States right now but when I meet other people in New York they asked me where are you from I said Grenada they said you don't have an accent I said no I was born in St George's so I don't have an accent if I should meet you on the streets of New York and somehow we got in to a conversation you would not know if I'm Grenadian or not anyway I appreciate your honesty about Grenada on most of the things you said there are things that we accustomed to and that's the Canadians very humble people very God fearing people so we tomorrow please God

I am a grenadian,so what it was before people tried not to see babies after the babies christening.not family members off course, the public.The whole thing was grounded in superstition but it was also safe.
I can relate with that. With Nigerians, Christening was an unofficial way to let people know that the Mom is ready to go about her daily life as usual. E.g she won’t run so much errands or attend church for 3 months until after baby’s Christening; then she can go to Church as she wishes and run errands and be “seen everywhere”. But before Christening, people “come to her” instead.

At work you cannot communicate without saying Mr or Mrs you better be careful . You are funny sometimes with what you feel you have observed. We love African movies because we are African decent. Watch European and American movies are not the same
Yes, you are right. I also observe that too and I know that’s the foundation taught here just like in Africa. However, being in gatherings where it’s a mix of culture but predominantly Grenadians, it’s been RELATIVELY lenient compared to where I come from. Thank you.☺️

I think the terms "husband" and "wife" are used very loosely in many African cultures meaning that there is no official ceremony just an acceptance that if they are together these are "respectable" terms. Have come across this numerous times which can be very confusing.I once had a Nigerian boyfriend who always referred to me as his wife- we were not married, didn't live together and didn't have children together? In the caribbean context these are literal terms suggestive of a civil ceremony taking place. The woman referring to her "boyfriend" could have been in a committed relationship for 10, 20, 30 years( longer than some marriages last!!!) but he is still her boyfriend or partner unless they have been through a civil ceremony.
You are correct about Africans loosely using the term “wife/husband”, however, this is used in an informal setting; in formal settings they won’t do that as much.
Here are some reasons they loosely use that term:
An African girl feels a form of satisfaction when her man calls her “wife” (In her head, she translates it as the relationship is being so serious that it would lead to marriage)
The African man use this as a territorial term to ward off other men from the girl he calls “wife” because he MAY be serious about the relationship.
Yeah, in the Caribbean and in Europe, America etc, a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship spans for years. I agree.

What really is the difference between a couple that signs some papers, had an elaborate wedding and live together as husband and wife; and another couple who didn't sign any papers and didn't have any elaborate wedding, and live together as husband and wife? Marriage is not some papers. Marriage is not a wedding. Marriage is living together in one house. The Spanish word for house is casa. The Spanish verb to marry is Casar (to house). The Bible even shows that in ancient times there was no wedding ceremony. A man married a woman simply by taking her into his house to live with him. That was the "ceremony". So I think it's wrong to look down on common law couples who live together in a committed relationship as husband and wife under one roof. A wedding is just formal ceremony. It literally makes no difference whether or not you have a wedding. No scratch that, there is one difference: many marriages with weddings start off on the wrong foot because the wedding debt creates a financial strain that triggers money problems that can lead to tension between the two.
“Marriage is not a wedding” which I totally agree with. In Africa, a wedding is not required BUT a blessing from parents/guardians/clan to usher a woman to her new home, whether ceremoniously or not. This is the perspective I’m coming from.
I also see nothing wrong with a couple declaring they are married without the aforementioned taking place. My reference is on people who decide they are not/don’t want to be bound (legally or traditionally) but want to be/raise a family. Eg Oprah and Stedman like I stated.
The last time I checked, marriage is defined as the legally or formally recognized union of two partners in a relationship. If people do not recognize a couple’s intention of marriage, then the people can’t be wrong for saying the said couple is not married.
As for ancient times, it’s possible but after, Jesus did his first miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding. So it’s fair to say, they got caught up in the wedding bug too.😁 I am totally with you on Marriage is not a wedding, and those wedding debts can cause a strain too when not done right and prudently. Caribbean man, the difference between those who sign the papers is that they are legally entitled to their spouse's property unlike those who do not. However, no one is better than another because of their marital status.

I’m not sure this is true. He is from Mississippi. There is a small town in Mississippi called Grenada, it is pronounced the same way that we pronounce Grenada in the West Indies. Perhaps he was from Grenada, MS not Grenada, WI.

Wellllll…. Although polygamy is practiced in Africa/ Nigeria. It is not a popular lifestyle except for a certain ethnic group in Nigeria that see it as necessary to show affluence. The other ethnicities or should I say, the average man/woman on the street (in Nigeria) still can’t wrap their heads around the idea of polygamy.
Nigerians say “pick up” but say “pick” for short.

Re: Undressed tribes: Have you seen one in person?😅 Or is it what the media tells you. I won’t even see one in my lifetime even if I decide to live in the most rural parts of Nigeria. I’d be shocked too but I’d respect it.
There are tribes that could go partially naked for a “rite of passage/ceremony” (which I still haven’t seen in person in Nigeria) in Africa. However, I strongly argue that you’d see any tribe be naked daily. For context, you know there are tribes like this in the Brazilian and Ecuadorian Amazons,right? There are also “nudists” in the western society…Not Just Africa!
Even if you came across a tribe you described, I bet you, it’s soooo small, and when I mean small, I mean…infinitesimal!

As far as the good night When you just meet someone it's just a greeting we were raised to greet. No matter if It's morning or night, evening you greet someone! It also depends on who you are around how they view marriage in the Christian community is shown upon to be with someone and you're not married with them. And giving them marriage title. Then going out somewhere and having to pay for your food. It depends on who you're around hanging out with. I know lots of folks that Cater for the people that they're around/host my family/friends/relatives does not operate that way.
Omg I wanted to visit when you had your daughter. But we're told that babies are susceptible to diseases when they're born and needs at least the first 6 weeks with their household only..... also we don't come until we get invited. And when we do get invited I was taught to give money💰

Nakky!🥰 The reason for the baby visit wait is very good, especially in these times. The money gift is very well appreciated. I’m speaking for most moms because sometimes duplication of gifts happen and makes the item needless.
Nakky, now you know why I had to pay for mine.😅 We’ve had invitations at restaurants and we paid for ours. Imagine going out with my “20 kids”. I won’t call all of them friends, they were more like acquaintances with mutual interests. But friends do it here too. For home bound meetings, the meal would be free by the host but mostly we pay for ours at restaurants. Apart from a Nigerian couple-friend’s, I just can’t remember any outing in restaurants, bars, even sailboats that I didn’t pay for my meal/experience.
I’ve had a wedding invitation, and there was suppose to be a weekend stay (for guests) in same resort as the wedding, and we were suppose to pay for our experience. We were to pay for our food at the wedding, couple was only paying for drinks(we would pay for refills). That was the height of it. Unfortunately, it was canceled cos of the pandemic, THANKFULLY, we saved our money.

Yeah, that's what I know as well but we normally won't say goodnight as a first greeting even if it's at midnight. Goodnight for us is always to say farewell. lol

You want Africans to copy Oyinbo culture. Ask a Japanese, a woman would not call another woman a first name out of respect even they are of the same age except they are very close from childhood talk less of someone who is one day older. This is African tradition. Please teach your children the right way.
Mr Radcon, my video didn’t say we should copy Westerners, it says “surprising lifestyle…”. We raise our kids and are still raising our kids well. We as Africans don’t call our seniors on first-name basis except the recipient insists to be called on first-name basis; I had a boss from South Africa (63), I was 25, we called him “Sir” with so much reverence, he found it uncomfortable and would insist all of us, including a small “me” to call him by first name. The culture is there but first-hand preference might outweigh tradition in some circumstances. Thanks for watching.🙂
