- Spur-winged plovers are bold and territorial birds that are notable for arriving in New Zealand, and going from fully protected to having said protection removed 80 years after their first breeding record. I hope you enjoy.

Delisted from protection due to being a bit of a c word. Love it
Pretty much! XD
Sea birds and C words
I associate them with the coast, although I see them occasionally in my inland Australian city.
I myself associate them with farmland considering where I see them. They're generalist birds, that's for sure!
Same
I love the face and wind front edge matching points. Unique.

"They lay 3 to 4 eggs"
Shows 5 eggs in photo.
(troll comment. I hate it when people nitpick videos)
That is the median, although more or less can sometimes be laid. :)
I'd always been under the impression that that call was some kind of seagull. Now I know
Now you do. :)
I would love to see that bird in person, great video Henry one fascinating bird to learn about.
The Canadian Geese of New Zealand, apparently.
We've got them down here as well, so yes, you could say that, although these guys are more manageable.
The way you speak, is pleasing to my ears 😌 Thanks for the great content Henry!!!
I appreciate that! More to come. :)
Thanks
No problem!
When you hear them in the mornings it means you stayed up too late 😂
Thanks so much for your consistently interesting content. I think I may now know more about New Zealand birds than my native birds!
"They lay 3-4 eggs."
*shows picture of a nest with 5 eggs*
XD
That is what's typical. Birds can and will lay more or less, although nothing too big outside a given range. :)
I have plovers in my Australian school, its fun running from them. They do not have eggs but have 1 baby left, they killed their second one. When ever someone goes up to them I get excited, and I'm like "ohhhh oh oh oh OH" then when they swoop im like "OH SHIT RUN RUNNNNNN" and hide. Sometimes other birds try to grab the baby, they chase it.
Fun Fact:
Plover Eggs were eaten for breakfast by first class passengers on the day the titanic sank.
Of course Australia has a bird with wing spikes.
I live in Tasmania
You can’t walk 2 seconds without seeing or hearing them
Annoying as hell
Interesting!
They can certainly be quite common!
Thay swooped my brother yesterday so yes, I don’t like them
Wow! They do have a rather raucous call, don't they? Lol Those spurs are impressive. 😯
Dope video
these swoopers are at my school. they r cute
This bird has attitude.
Don't mess with me or else I will get my spurs out :)
These things make so much noise. The amount of times I’ve been woken up by them 😤
I do think the SWP are pretty odd birds, but I love them for that, cause all birds are awesome
Are these related to Chilean Queltehues? Because they're very similar
I Will Keep that myth alive every chance i get "poison spores"
The mother in law bird
Supplanted the native pied stilt from its own range in New Zealand.Sad.
Demons
If you get on their bad side you'd certainly be forgiven for thinking so!
They're just being good parents. :)
I don't like killing animals just for the sake of it....
Most of the time
