I'm reminded of a quote from Frank Borman, one of the NASA Astronauts: “A superior pilot uses his superior judgment to avoid situations which require the use of his superior skill.” One could almost replace the word "fighter" for "pilot," in many cases.
I've also read the adage: "Don't go somewhere armed if you wouldn't go there unarmed."

This is 100% what everyone who even thinks about carrying self-defense tools needs to consider, and especially what everyone who wants to carry firearms needs to be instructed in. I've seen way too many gung-ho attitudes from hot-headed dudes with an over-inflated ego, who imagine all kinds of unrealistic scenario where they see themselves as some kind of action movie badass. Including ridiculous and deeply unethical ideas like shooting someone in the back who broke into their home and is trying to run away with valuables. Seriously...
Anyway, great video! Lots of good points, and succinctly presented.

Martial Arts training also emphasizes deescalation, and if an altercation occurs, it should be in the context of avoiding harm to yourself, incapacitating or moving the aggressor away from you, then running away. A "fight" is the worst case scenario.

I think the final parts need to be stressedHEAVILY.
There's an underlying attitude of the gun community that often will say something like "If you touch me I'll shoot you" which points out that just being touched or hit doesn't warrant shooting a person.
These people laugh about it because they fail on their part a restraint on their power. They are looking for excuses to shoot someone and live a John Wayne fantasy.
These people sicken me and are a blemish on firearm ownership.
Killing is NOT the way of man. And that can not be stressed enough no matter how many people look for baseless excuses

Another point I always see brushed over is what even constitutes self defense and the legal/mental consequences it comes with. A threat looking to take material objects often times isn’t worth the tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees and the mental toll of detention and arrest just for shooting a guy wanting your wallet, considering everything in that wallet is replaceable. Not that compliance towards a threat is the way to go, but if I’m gunna be arrested, have my weapon or firearm confiscated indefinitely and most likely forever, tried before a jury and have to pay a lawyer tens of thousands of dollars, and have the mental burden of hurting/killing a struggling person, I’d rather it be over something worthwhile, like my life or the life of a close loved one and/or the innocent people around me, not some material objects or a threat that can be deterred with less-than-lethal means.
And as for the less-than-lethal means, I always tell friends and family that I train; “if it won’t kill you immediately, it’s not worth killing immediately.”

Howdy, love the content, I have a request, could you talk about rifles (specifically the ar-15 since it's the most common) vs a short barred Ar-15 and or a pistol caliber carbine for home defense? I can't really wrap my head around some people wanting a long barreled rifle with a scope + 556 which is more likely to penetrate dry wall ect than a pistol caliber carbine, which is smaller, more maneuverable, and a lot less likely to penetrate dry wall especially with holo point rounds. Kinda seems unnecessary. Also, what the purpose of you having a long barred ar with a long scope?Other than it being cool and you wanting one, do you see it as realistically being used? And if so for what purpose? Thanks :)

very good video on your verbal judo examples. i first learned this back in the george thompson days who was in the martial arts and law enforcement and coined the term "verbal judo" it started out and was mostly for law enforcement but we can apply it to our selves, he has videos on youtube and i give him credit since he has the highest count of anyone deescalating dangerous situations where a person is going to comit suicide or hostage situations, many in law enforcement have neglected good deesculation and dont even know who george thompson these days is so work is needed and in deesculation even myself i watch george thompson videos and other videos to stay sharp in that area of defense, many other videos having different approaches to it but its all close to the same. the part i added to my version of deesculation was for law enforcement and the private citizen, its any time your in a situation simply see that person as a relative of yours, for example see the person as equal to your father, mother, brother, sister and that you would do anything to save their life so we treat others the same with nothing against the color, race, religeon and so on. there will be a time where you have done all you could and must take defensive action but many times its avoidable especially if your a private citizen non law enforcement since you dont have to chase and put cuffs on. the courts will focus on what we did to avoid the situation and the words we say wich can be used against us including our youtube channel so its important we let the public know we dont want to use force with a firearm but a last resort if immediate un avoidable danger so our conduct on our youtube videos can paint us as someone who looks for trouble or avoids it, i have seen channels that make verbal threats and this will be your doom in a trial when you need help the most so we make shure our words are that we are peaceful but armed and dont want to harm any one nor hate any group of people that may believe differently

Great information as always and I definitely appreciate the extra time spent on de-escalation strategies. The only point that I might disagree with is placing pepper spray in a higher tier than unarmed striking. In most jurisdictions, a punch and pepper spray carry the same legal consequences. In most instances, a punch will injure a person more than being sprayed with pepper spray. Sure, someone can die from a reaction from pepper spray, but a lot of people have died from being punched, too. I'd recommend using pepper spray before trying to physically fight someone in nearly every scenario.

It's not pleasant, it's not fun, and it's been decades ago and I still wonder if I could have done better, if I could have de-escalated. I know I couldn't have, but I still second guess myself.
I've also used lethal force. And by that I don't mean I've shot someone, I mean I've had a gun in my hand and been prepared to fire it if I had to. I hope I'm never in that situation again.

Choking or using a knife to defend yourself is not something you ever want to do, unless you have no option left. It's extremely hard to defend in court and when or if Police reach the scene, could witness you stabbing or choking the assailant. A legally owned firearm and conceal carry license, is the best manner for self defense. Since it's proof you legally acquired the firearm and legally are allowed to carry it for self defense. A knife is typically seen as an offensive weapon, and a jury will be far less likely to believe you were the one being attacked. Pepper spray is fine, but it's not a guaranteed method to stop an attack. You could miss, or worse, the spray blows back into your own face, blinding you. It's more than just self-defense and preventing yourself from being harmed. You also need to take into account the legal ramifications of the methods of self defense you use. Will it stand up in court, how would a jury perceive the use of the tactics you used? I would also add, that if you conceal carry, and can afford it, to have a lawyer on retainer. Just to be safe, if you ever have to defend yourself.

This is clearly for US, here in Spain the thing it's different; here only the cops or the military have the right of use lethal force, the civilians don't. No matter the case or scenario, you gonna end in jail if you kill someone. The best way to aboid a fight it's A) don't be there B) say "yeah, you're right" and leave C) see the potential threat or threats before they manifest and leave the area (even if that means that "you're a coward") or stay at a distance, as far as you can be; learn the facial expresions and body language to determine where are the pontential threads. I know a lot of people that their "weekend hobby" it's to beat people up, the only way to get outta there (from this people i know) would be to be more skilled in krag maga, Win Tsun, moai tay, kali, self defense or judo and.. be ready and aware. I've been fighting the local nazis for 30 years or so and i've been attacked with knifes, hatchets, machetes, battons, bike chains, belts, knuckle dusters, bottles or baseball bats and the way to get away from it was to be faster with the hands, wear the right clothes, numerical superiority or just run away to fight another day. I don't have a key answer, there're too many people and scenarios; aboid the violence as much as you can, by any necessary means, be aware of your surroundings, limitations, capabilities and the laws i guess would be my answer. Aboid the violence and the violent people as much as one can.

ive used aggressive body language and tone to de-escalate a bigger guy...sometimes it is faster to show em you are ready to go. that will deter most aggressors but i knew the guy was somewhat reasonable coz he was well presented and had his wife like a few meters away, also he was maybe ape posturing. im sure if i had flinched he would have probably beat me up good

The only thing I can agree with you is you can't de-escalate anyone but yourself. To enact self defense all you need is fear of great bodily harm or injury adding a bunch of stuff to it is what is known as moving the goal post ( a common tactic used by a certain political party) and you can never know what force is appropriate without the ability to read the aggressors mind and know how far they are willing to go.
