I wached Macross a couple years ago because you mentioned it in several videos and I was very surprised, both about the story, the romance and the action. Really good show
This sparked my love of Mecha, the f-14, war drama, how war matures people, space operas, as well as my moderate distain for the idol genre but I do enjoy all the Macross bangers
Despite Robotech's Reputation it's a 90+ percent accurate dub of the Macross series with some Americanized names. (Ex. Lisa instead of Miss) It may even be the most accurate dub for a 80s Anime to air on TV at the time. It's the two later series heavily adapted into Macross storyline. Also, I actually prefer Robotechs consistency over the later Macross products. The biggest departure from Macross series is that Macross tends to focus on the philosophy of conflict while Robotech is an intergalactic war over a critical resource. It's 2021 though and if you like Robotech you have to turn in your Weeb card, but I prefer Robotech as a whole over Macross.
90% sounds about right. I think if you're just comparing the 36 original vs the 36 adapted episodes, Macross' story is just more polished, though. Robotech wins in the sound design department because they were able to go back and put in stuff Macross missed with all their production woes, but Robotech's plot got restricted by things like having to adapt the dialogue for younger US audiences used to simpler cartoons and stricter US S&P, chopping out 2 minutes per episodes due to longer US commercial breaks, shifting parts of the already-shortened runtime to focus on plot developments in episodes 37-85, etc. To get that level of cohesion for all three arcs, they had to eat into the cohesiveness of the first 36. Now if you like the entire 85-episode RT arc, then by all means watch RT, but I really think it’s better to treat them as separate entities these days. If you’re really engaged in the story, the differences start becoming more noticeable, and if you're just watching for the Macross bits then go with the fuller version. BTW, I'm not going to bother comparing voices or BGM, since thats too much of a personal preference thing.
@mrmacross At this point I treat Robotech and Macross like Gundam treats The One Year War vs Seed. (And their alternate time lines) Robotech is Similar to Macross obviously. But the three wars, fought by three different generations, with wildly different conflicts, across multiple space systems feels grander then Macross alone.
5:35 Ah yes, the reality bending moments of Macross. The one that had me scratching my head and laughing was in ep 3 around 20 mins. Hikaru & Lynn floating in space after the fold happened. The small air leak in the aircraft did not cause them to lose oxygen, furthermore it was fixed with a cloth/tissue? lol it reminded me of Phil Swift and his Flex Tape fixing leaking holes
I grew up with robotech and some how I loved the macross saga and hated the rest😅, I even made a paper plane toy that could transform in to all 3 modes, back when frontier started I found out what macross really was and all the shows, today I have a few planes, and 3 games the psp triangle frontier, last frontier, and macross 30!!! My dream is to have a vr game ala ace combat 7 vr!!! Massive fan!!!
ive been watching it for the past couple days. On ep 14 or so right now. The only character I personally don't like is minmae herself but the other ones are so good that it doesn't really take away and the relationship building aspect is still solid. They all feel like real people and not just tropes . (cough cough demon slayer). I really really like the lieutenant girl. She has so many layers so her that they slowly uncover as well as her relationship with the MC. The plot moves at just a good enough pace to keep you interested while developing the characters. Ironically as someone who personally found Legend of The Galactic Heroes to be sleep inducing i actually really like this series so far

Another great review but you got something wrong. ADV made a dub for this in the late 2000's for hulu. I haven't seen it, don't even know if it's complete, but it's out there.
I don't think the dub was made for Hulu, as Hulu didn't exist when the dub was made. It's a lousy dub. The voice acting is awful. Worst of all is they mispronounce "Macross" the entire series and it's utterly maddening.
I’m just starting Macross after struggling for a bit debating on whether to start this or Robotech but I’m loving it so far, so many crazy twists so early on in the show it’s been jaw dropping over and over and I also hate Minmei as well.
@@bobsamurai absolutely have and now that I’m in the final episodes I enjoy it just as much if not more than when I made this comment, constant action and drama! Definitely 10/10
Thanks for covering this series and giving it the praise and recognition it deserves. I do think you are being too harsh on robotech though. While it is inferior and flawed in many aspects, the original english dub is surprisingly well voice acted and endearing and still holds up.
5:51 Omg the 'cockpit' came out from the crotch region. I wouldn't have noticed it if you didn't use that part as an example of comedy. Thanks for that, I guess XD.
From 2003 to 2020, I only ever saw the fiest episode of Robocrap multiple times and thought it was okay (saw a couple of more later but didn't get far). FAST-FORWARD TO 2020 -- I stumbled into a subbed version on Prime, full of long commercials but it was so good snd kept my attention. I WAS BLOWN AWAY, and immeidafwly wanted more. I feel bad for friends gave only experiencrd that Roboshite and never gandered to look furtner.
I loved this show when I first watched but I might watch it again one of these days. But thanks to me starting my MAL account, I have been more biased to getting more of the backlog done. That and I am not very good at getting done anime that is over 12 episodes consistently anymore. But I agree with what you said here. All though it's hard for me to choose between Macross and the original Gundam. It's like choosing between Doom or Duke Nukem 3D or FEAR and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Or for a movie comparison, Terminator 2 and Aliens lol.
I wonder if the guys working at Studio Nue were fans of Marilyn Monroe and possibly used her as a point of reference for Minmay ? They share so many similarities to me atleast.
In the 1990s, I used to argue a lot with Western Macross and Robotech fans (well, mostly Robotech fans since it was the 1990s) that Minmay is probably misunderstood. Don't get me wrong, she's written to be a frustrating character because we the audience are rooting for Hikaru. Also, Roy, Minmay's aunt, Minmay's uncle, the Mayor, Max, and Kakizaki were all shipping Hikaru x Minmay, adding to the stakes. But the more I think about it, what does she really do wrong? Not see Hikaru is into her? Fine, but he could be as nice to her as humanly possible and save her life a million times, but it's not like she owes him a relationship. Love isn't quid pro quo. And as Hikaru admitted himself in episode 27, that's what he gets for not speaking his mind and expecting Minmay to read it. Anyway, long story short, fans tended to put 100% of the blame on Minmay, but Hikaru probably deserved close to half of it. And Misa ended up making many of the same dumb mistakes Hikaru did, making her life miserable and nearly as frustrating as Hikaru.
A review I completely agree with story is Damm amazing and I liked how They have Used Songs and Culture and "Culture" as weapons though my score is just 8.2 I am a big fan of Romance and I have never been more disspointed with the Ending it's Macross nothing is confirmed is until its not confirmed so I can't say if Whom Hikaru ends up with actually ends up with I dislike Minmay but I understand why would she act like that way and yes Hikaru deserves least to be in a relationship And that I dislike that extended epiloge Tldr:my rating is low because Ending wasn't satisfying I dislike that they extended the epilog that long and Max's relationship is just rushed but I love the series
Thank you for your work. For me, Macross is the best mecha anime ever made. Gundam too often presents conflicts whose genesis is missed, too far-fetched... and it's messy. The best example is Zeta Gundam but there's also Turn A... I've followed the whole saga (apart from the very recent ones) and the only one for which I barely cringed is Gundam 00 (And what generic!); Evangelion is too incoherent, unhealthy, even dangerous... in terms of the scenario. The animation is superb but what this anime offers in terms of messages, story is just awful. Macross is the only work that is both grandiose, epic and well-constructed every time. The atmosphere of the first series (with its magnificent songs) is unforgettable; Macross 7 with Basara, his band members and the incredibly beautiful and powerful songs, is unforgettable; Macross Frontier offers a really impressive scenario and several very beautiful songs and even Macross Delta manages to surprise. Macross is truly a unique experience. Gundam too but for Evangelion...
