@@roetemeteor At 2:20 you can see the bed is trash because it would take more than just those two kids to lift an actual bed frame with a real matress on it, so clearly the furniture was also cheap. It also would have been easier for him to break through the wall in this cheaply build set

Hotpockets 222 the force was centered into one area because the door broke. Because of this, he could move the furniture easily.
If the average door breaks then that would imply it would in movies too, it was to see if the barricade itself would hold it to see if the person was incapable of entering regardless.

Love to see this retested with Solid wood door. Solid metal would be overkill with the only weakness that could screw the furniture blockade being the framework holding the door.
Thus this deserves a retest with multiple attackers of different statures and multiple different doors.

@@nicholasbenjamin3826 currently where I live, I have fire doors so goodluck getting through those. Back at my normal house, we got thick wooden doors. You would need a battering ram to get through one of those trust me.
@@iCore7Gaming The Fire Door are probably fine, but it may not be. Check the door jamb. That''s the piece that links the door to the wall. It's typically 1/2 inch or less, and if that breaks the door swings right open because nothing is holding it to the wall. The metal reinforcement around the latch mechanism helps some, but if Tommy batters that door a couple times he could very well break the wood it's attached to, and then he's through.

One thing I think they should have mentioned was that it's important to put a TALL piece of furniture in front of the door first. That way even if they break the top half of the door off, they can't just climb in. Plus it's giving the door more surface area to brace against

you would need something super strong & impossible to knock over like a bed with a tall headboard made of titanium (and then you would have to wedge it against the wall like they tried to do) in order to keep tommy out

If they had stood the dresser up and put it drawers facing the door, then wedged the other furniture between it and the other wall... that would've put a lot of pretty solid wood on this side of the door, reinforcing it all the way up. I think that would've prevented the door from breaking.
You also want stuff with higher friction in front as well

"Solid" as in "has foam inside" rather solid as in "has no literal air holes in it"
It would also help if it was actual solid wood not that crap. Was that plywood? It looked like cardboard.
@@jfarrar19 solid core is a slab of wood for a door. Usually used as a door entering the garage from inside the house. Any other type of door, even containing foam, is hollow core.

The only thing I learned from this is that doors made/used in the USA are made of cartboard. Try something like that in the Netherlands and you bust up your shoulders and back. :)

Yep, if they used doors like in europe it could be difficult, but otherwise, instead you can just go through the drywall which is often used in US. ^^

FWIW, these flimsy doors are pretty common in the US but are used only for interior doors in homes, mostly for the purpose of privacy. They're designed to be cheap and lightweight, not for security. We do have solid, secure doors here, just like everywhere else in the world.

So you get a strong door. But did you reinforce the hinges and did you reinforce the frame? Because otherwise you could just donkey kick near the hinges and rip them off. Once the frame is reinforced, they can just enter in through the window. If you reinforce the window, or bar It off ,now you just have an ugly looking house. A secure one, but an ugly one. And of course at that point, there's always the wall. Point is, if they want into a room, they can get into a room.

@@tobywest8887 IKEA door. They mail you saw dust and binder, basically what MDF is. Now my bedroom door on the other hand is 1.5-2" of solid wood. It's not that expensive and is standard in almost all houses

yep, the problem with furniture is that it's usually heavy cause there's stuff in it not like in this experiment, but either way would give you time to escape the room
As someone with a little brother. I can confirm that weight alone will never stop them for long. Wedging is the only solution. Granted we've never gone to the extreme of destroying the door. Big Tommy for the win. Regardless when I get a house all the doors are going to be solid wood or re-inforced. Same for the doorframe. All in all an excellent myth for the show!

This could've been in the 2nd or 3rd floor, if they jumped there is a very high probability of the fall damage to break their legs or whatever they land on with. Plus, if it was on the 1st floor, the bad guy could have just go through the window instead.
@@leotrace9158 most houses have two or three floors, tops. You can climb out on a bed sheet to get low enough to fall. I'm not saying it's a perfect plan, but it's an okay plan.

In the US at least, interior doors are usually light and cheap (designed for privacy rather than security) like the one in this video. They probably used that door for the demonstration because that's the situation portrayed in TV shows and movies (i.e. someone's inside the building and you're in a room with a bunch of furniture). Exterior doors are the heavy and solid types.

At the very last episode of the original Myth busters Kari and Tory got fired by the producers and Grant left to pursue other things then Adam and Jamie went their separate ways and no longer speak to each other.

The door hinges and the chair would be the next item to break, or the door handle itself. If there is no exit to the room, they could always stake outside or have time to get something that will break the door down.

I think the best technique is to FIRST lock the door then find something like a bed or book shelf to block most of the door. Then gradually start piling up things but start with larger furniture first then finish off with smaller furniture...I mean...if you can...
Locking the door will be quite effective as long as the door is a little more sturdy than this one.
You can like a long piece of furniture against the wall, forcing the intruder to push against the wall rather than the weight of the furniture therefore making their efforts fairly useless
Best technique is to not order pizza to a serial killer.
Else, if your doors are cardboard made, you'd better try negotiating or running through a cardboard wall while he runs through your door

If they put the bookcase in front of the door in room 1, and then made sure the bookcase couldn't be pushed over by locking it tightly against the door using the other furniture, the door would have withheld. A man like Tommy might have been able the break the door down and breaking the bookcase in half though

Yah it would have been smarter to put the furniture at a 45'angle with the wall or something like that
I thought they'd do triangle of life (put something sturdy at an angle towards the door) then stack all the furniture behind it. It probably wouldn't matter because the door itself was so easy to break.

This is why doors put into square alcoves are useful because it is a smaller area to fill and you can use the wall across from the door as bracing

The barricades worked in both cases. It was just the doors that failed. I'd love to see this tried with a solid wood door, or one of those metal doors with the little window in it you see in movies all the time.

The variable that they left out was the strength of Tommy! If the time keeper girl was trying to get in, she wouldn’t have made it past the first door!
My teacher took the table by our classroom door for a lockdown drill and covered the door with it and the Principal couldn’t get into the classroom to tell us the drill was over. It took one table. Wow.

Regular people might not be able to break the door, but that dude's a living battering ram, and that's a compliment, lol.
When I was 7 I was bad and my dad was coming home to give me a whipping so I barricaded my door in the same way Valerie and Adam did, but I used VHS tapes and stacked them end to end all the way to the wall. My dad was a little surprised he had to really push hard to get in. That was the last time I drew on the wall.
I miss the original mythbusters! Every time I think about the end the show I get sad!

@@henrypeter1473 Water, hardened tip and diamond tip drills, and high explosives have all proven effective against bedrock. Heck, a decent pickaxe and plenty of manpower can get through it pretty well - how do you think caves and mines are dug out?

The second trial has some smart moves to put the furniture that way, it minimizes both the shear force and torque, along with a carpet of greater friction it works great. However the way you barricade doesn't matter as it appears that it is the door that's far too weak and gets broken every time prior to the furniture breaking, it would at most slow down the entry. Try stronger doors like the ones made of metal.

While true for this clip, your size isn't that much of a factor if you know how to apply the force you do have in the right area. I'm almost literally 1/3 the size of that guy but I've still managed to kick in a couple of doors; in my case my legs are stronger than my torso so I focus all the power of my kicks around the door handle as the jamb is often the weakest part of the door.

That's only interior doors the outside doors usually hard wood or metal like mines.
The Creator where I live every door inside the house is made of hard wood, well maybe with the exception of kitchen.

@United NationsTv That's not a fake door. That's the cheapest door you can buy at a big box store. I put doors just like that in my low end rental because the nice doors get defaced by idiots with pens and knives. Let them ruin pressed saw dust. The real question here is, why did the producers use a $20 door to stop a giant?
