This is a song by Simon and Garfunkel from the 60's. Disturbed did a great job with it, but it's very different from the original, which is also great.
The Simon and Garfunkel version was more of a "warning or what to come". This version is the "you didnt listen to the warning...so now we are dealing with it".
Amazing to see you go from saying you're not a fan of metal to you headbanging along 10 months later. Thank you for being open minded and sharing that with the world.
Disturbed is definitely a heavy metal band, very much like the hard rock bands if the 1980s and early 1990s. However, as can be seen by this video, they're versatile. Great reaction, buddy!
Is "metal" as people call it but not "Heavey metal", its metal with a chill vibe. Jason says terrible reaction...oh so you want him to fake it...that makes it a better one. Reactions are of what people react ...tooo... hence reaction. What did you want him to suddenly build a fceeking snowman?
That *was* actually Metal. If you look into it a bit more, you'll find that Metal is an absolutely massive genre which encompasses a whole lot of very, *very* different sounding types of music.
To get a true look at David's range listen to "Down With the Sickness & Through the Fire," they show his metal range the listen to " The Light, A Reason to Fight, and Hold on to Memories " to get a look at a softer side.
Great reaction. Let me suggest another cover. This was a folk rock song covered by a heavy metal band. My suggestion is a song written by a heavy metal band (Nine Inch Nails) about heroin addiction, but covered by Johnny Cash, who turns it into a song about regrets at the end of your life. It was the last music video Johnny Cash ever recorded (in 2003). It is "Hurt." Be sure to watch the official video, since it has all kinds of pictures from Johnny's life.
Totally agree. And I believe Trent Reznor, after seeing the video of Johnny Cash version of Hurt, went so far to say that the song was no longer his anymore as he was so moved by Cash’s interpretation of “valentine to the sufferer”. It is hauntingly beautiful and will make you cry.
Disturbed is a heavy metal band. This cover just very much out of the box for them. It took quite a few years before they came up with Virgin that you see. One of their call that I really like his called Inside the Fire. But it is not for everyone because it deals with suicide. When David was his girlfriend committed suicide and he was the one who found. The video is about wanting to join her.. it can be a very difficult video to watch probably grabbing something to do with what your relationship is to suicide. David is a classically trained singer. He was raised and Orthodox Jew which means his family was very very observant. He was trained as a cantot. In Judaism the counter sings everything that the rabbi has read from the Torah. It is beautiful to hear even if you don't understand what's going on. I don't Hebrew so I don't know what they're saying but it is very beautiful. His story is reminiscent of the movie The Jazz Singer where Neil Diamond is a camper and wants to stop doing that and become a jazz singer. It's an old movie. And if you've never reacted to Neil Diamond you need to react to Neil Diamond
I've learned that David Draiman and Disturbed address depression, addiction and suicide during every concert, performance offering support and understanding. They are one of the⁶ most popular, loved bands of our time!
David is part of a thinking man's heavy metal band. They push boundaries and they have gifted musicians and singer in their company. They have a number of covers that are great but this one was their kingpin. 633 million views last I checked, no one has ever been less than shaken by the power of this video. Paul Simon called them and told him it was the only cover of his music that he ever liked, he linked it on his website too. He's never done that before. David is a trained singer from a family of cantors for his Jewish temple. He is a glory. He's also a great guy and so are the other three. I'm 67 and I love this band. I also love your channel. :D

People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening can also refer to smartphones. As a nurse, I have walked into a room with 3-4 people and everyone had their head down in their phones instead of talking to those right there in front of them. Sad!
@@lisalewis4237 There were no smartphones, tablets, home PC's, etc...when Paul Simon wrote this in 1964 :) However, this song transcends generations since now, as you say, people are addicted to their technology. These verses are even MORE true today than when written almost 60 years ago.

Note that the instruments are all on one side of the water and all the people on the other side are holding sheets of music. Its a beautiful song. I have listened to it all my life.
This song has so many different meanings... When schools, especially public schools from kindergarten through high school run out of funding the first programs they cut ✂️ are the art's, music, theater etc. Also, ISOLATION, DIVISION, LONELINESS, NOT COMMUNICATING, NOT STANDING UP FOR OUR RIGHTS OR EXPRESSING OURSELVES AND WHAT WE BELIEVE IN, I could go on and on.
This song was written in the early '60's by Paul Simon and released by Simon & Garfunkel. It was the song that also got them back together and set Music History in motion.
Sound of Silence done by Simon&Garfunkle in the late 60’s . Paul Simon heard this guy sing his song and loved it. He is a trained opera singer and his music is usually heavy metal
Originally, the song was written and preformed by Simon and Garfunkle in the 60's. I saw once that someone said that the original was a "warning" and Disturbed's cover was evoking anger that the warning was ignored.
Its been said that the original version by Simon & Garfunkle was a warning to the world. The Disturbed version is the anger because people didn't pay attention. One of the best remakes ever.
There’s so much music out there. So many different kinds of music. So many different artists. But here’s the thing: music allows each of us to connect with one another on so many different levels. No matter how different we are in our life experiences, music is the bridge we all share so we can connect with each other. Music is the common language we all share. It brings us together in ways we never expected to share. Yet there it is, the glue that joins all of us into one huge family-despite how different our lives are, music unites us into one people. If there is any way for us to unite as one people, music will pave the way for us to come together. On that day, we will sit and listen, and realize that all the ways we have found to hate and kill and fear one another have always been meaningless. We have always been one people. We will always be one people. We just have to realize it and believe it, and act as one family, worldwide.
Every reactor to this song seem puzzled by by the 4 seconds of silence at the beginning of this cover...but the title is the "sound" of silence. Hence the silence (sound) at the beginning of the song. This gives you a reference point to start to build the song.
Love the way he sings, Disturbed is a rock group. Never judge a song by the first few lyrics or sec. This is an old song that they decided to sing their way.
I am 62 i have LOVED MUSIC since I was about 5 years old. I love all types of music. David is so gifted. Another group id Bad Wolf's Zombie. Its a AWESOME song.
I didn’t see all of the comments so you may know this already, the original song was in the folk genre by Simon and Garfunkel in 1963. It was written during a time of strife in this country with the Vietnam war, the assassination of JFK, RFK and MLK. It’s basically a statement on the lack of communication between people. Pretty much the same thing we are going through today. Well I love the same and Garfunkel version, the disturbed version puts much more emphasis on the fact that 50 years later people still are not communicating.
It is metal you just gotta wait for. This is my absolute favorite version of this song. I'm person it's even better. Down with the sickness is awesomely incredible in person

David's said the band took a beating from their hard-core fans about this...but most eventually came around to it lol. He's very respectful of their fanbase, so nice to see.
My favorite band... EVER! Metal... yes, but with actual talent. Hope you react to more Disturbed... also, try out some Papa Roach, Five Finger Death Punch and Korn. All amazing voices.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sitting through it and listening. Really listening. Too many vloggers let themselves get in the way with pauses and not really listening. I’m subscribing. You’re the type of reactor I like.
Paul Simon wrote songs that run to the core, lyically and musically. I'm a hard rock guy, but Simon's music will bring the hardest man to his knees, an amazing artist, and a nice rendering here.
Honey, Heavy Metal is not thrashing noise. It's the acceptance of Darkness and the beauty that is contained in Darkness. That is why Gothic culture and Metal culture blend so well together. This song is so Metal
There is such a stigma on "metal" music. It's so extremely versatile, as music should be. Honestly, "metal" and "rock" and "country" are all just LABELS. They're labels on a certain style of music. And that label should make it more identifiable of distinguishing certain styles of music from others, but it SHOULDN'T tell you which ones to AVOID. I used to be the same, ngl. I still have this certain stigma in my mind on music styles like hardstyle, or dubstep, or house. "That sounds like this", or "this sounds like that". It's a stereotypical way of thinking that needs to die. All music have something personal to say. And their message deserves to be heard. Whether that message speaks to you or not heavily depends on who you are as a person and what you've experienced in life. So. Keep your mind open for any and all styles of music. Metal can be absolutely beautiful to listen to. My personal favorite is symphonic metal, which incorporates classical elements into heavy metal music to create a truly epic gospel of music that fulfills my soul. My favorite is Nightwish. Their newest lead singer, Floor Jansen, is a fucking valkyrie. Tall, gothic, an EXTREMELY versatile and angelic voice... Check her and her band out, they are incredible.

The group is heavy metal. But this song first came out in 1964. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sang it. It was wrote by paul when he was 21. This song is much more powerful and has more depth and feeling . It is AWESOME
I would love for you to react to Zombie by the Cranberries, and also by Bad Wolves(a cover of it). As for this song, The Sound of Silence was written in the 60s by Paul Simon, has been covered many many times, but this is probably the best cover, as for the rest of Disturbed's catalog, strap in and hold on, as it is very different than this.
Disturbed is actually a heavy metal band. I grew up to the original version. I didn't really care for this version when I first heard it but I have grown to love this version best probably because I still enjoy heavy metal music. I love your reaction, thanks. Here is a great song from the 70's for you to react to. This performance is awesome. Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4 - 7/21/1970 - Tanglewood
Very rarely do remakes compare to the original and you can name on both hands how many remakes that artists top the original. I was shocked when i heard this for the first time. Talk about taking a risk! Disturbed is a true Heavy Metal band incredible range awesome song.
New Sub here! I’m loving your reactions. I have a suggestion. Metallica “Enter Sandman Live from Moscow” This concert has The largest attendance in History (1.6 Million)
If you decide to check out more of this band, keep in mind, this is a very different piece of art that is not like most of their music. Both are deserving, but you may not feel the same way as it is much more heavy metal than here. This song was a heavy metal band calling out to the world to heed the warnings of Simon and Garfunkel (original song).
Disturbed is a heavy metal band whose name and trajectory was greatly affected when David Draiman, an operatically trained cantor, decided to become their front-man.
The original is sung by Simon and Garfunkel used in the movie The Graduate. This is the best cover of this song I have ever heard. Got the very first vinyl by Simon and garfunkal. In my 60's but still a hippy
Disturbed did a magnificent job on this cover. They made it theirs and owned it. The video is multi-layered. You actually need to watch it several times to catch all the symbolism. The song was written by folk music artists Simon and Garfunkel, a message to the elders at the time to listen to the cries of the newest coming of age generation (Boomers) to reject materialism and focus on the needs of the people.
I would have never listened to this except one of my sons said I had to. I grew up with the original, but thought this was amazing. Very, very dark cover of the original. I am not a heavy metal fan, but this, like I said, was amazing!
one of the original artists who created this song actually commended them for this cover. the Simon and Gafunkel version is a Warning, the Disturbed version a Rebuke, for not heeding the warning. im a fan of both versions and both groups/bands... :)
The Juxtoposition of the ending is Off The Charts. An homage to the dead (which is what most people are Mentally, Musically, Intellectually etc.)crossing the River Styx to their last resting spot, is changed to a Positive of the Musicians in the Boat, crossing the River, to join the Lyricists on the Other Bank, to allow them and us, to Grow in the above stated ways, oh so needed.
Yes disturb is a heavy metal group. But the song the sound of silence, was originally done by Simon and Garfunkel which is a folk pop group. Of the 70s
If you haven't heard them, I would say listen to "Wrong Side of Heaven" by Five Finger Death Punch as well as their song "I Apologize." No matter how many times I watch/listen to Wrong Side of Heaven, it always gets me. The meaning behind the song is super deep and basically does a hell of a good job conveying all the hell a solider goes through, both while deployed and home after the fight. Also, Disturbed is more of a Heavy Metal band but this song was a cover of the original and more of one of their "softer" songs.
Rome, that’s the least I’ve ever heard you interject. You were completely engrossed in the performance. Love seeing folks learn new things. Proud of your growth man.
David Draimon sat in the recording booth and did this many times before deciding on this one. They did the video around him singing. David is a trained Cantor, thus the different vocal ranges.
I am probably older than most of your listeners. Thank you for doing this, great job. I think you should share some of what you like on occasions as well. I am a rock and country fan, so I think using your philosophy I too should have my horizons broadened. Just be genial with us.
This version of Simon & Garfunkel's iconic hit, is beautifully done. David Drainem's ability to pivot the tone of the song without losing the brilliance of the original song is amazing! There is debate of whether this version is perhaps better than the original in that, the power that continues to rise throughout this version...is so intense that Disturbed definitely made it their own. The original is incredible as well though : )
I liked your reaction - it’s always nice to someone do reactions where they actually pause the music and comment on it, instead of them solely staring at a video👍

"Oh ... woah ... woah ..."
Exactly.
check out the sound of silence by Simon and Garfunkel also see in actually see the difference between the 2
Love your channel and reactions! I watch every day! Keep up the wonderful work ❤😊
Every reactor to this song seem puzzled by by the 4 seconds of silence at the beginning of this cover...but the title is the "sound" of silence.
That is the most amazing cover ever of the original song of Simon and Garfunkel!!!!
It is metal you just gotta wait for.
This is my absolute favorite version of this song.
I'm person it's even better. Down with the sickness is awesomely incredible in person
Understand the desire to live and learn music. Grew up in 70's80's with everything from disco, acid rock to Sugar Hill Gang and the birth of Rap/HipHop. Expand your mind
He did such a great job on this cover. Branching out can be an awesome experience. Thank you for another great reaction!
Down with the Sickness is one of their songs you should definitely see
There is such a stigma on "metal" music.
I have thouroughly enjoyed your vloggs....Your trip is for me a trip down memory lane but i love the fact that your discovering these great song keep it up love your reactions ..
This song is a glimpse into the future. When people don't talk to each other anymore.
Online cellphone chat...
Years before cellphones or computers. He saw what we have become
New Sub here and I really like your videos so far. Two suggestions... 1. Use headphones. On your journey it will enhance so many of these great songs you will discover. 2. Try to make your sound quality better for you listeners. That's it. Great job. Can't wait to see where this new interest in metal & country takes you.
What a fabulous suggestion !!!! Johnny Cash was wonderful, that song done by him gives it new meaning.
You could make sound quality better for your listeners. I don’t want you take it wrong- just trying to help you out.
Disturbed is a heavy metal band. This was something unique.
I first heard this version of an old Simon and Garfunkel I liked as a kid, I immediately went to ITunes and bought it.
The group is heavy metal. But this song first came out in 1964. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sang it. It was wrote by paul when he was 21. This song is much more powerful and has more depth and feeling . It is AWESOME
Heavy ROCK & ROLL Metal comes in every form. Welcome aboard
Have to listen to both
They’re definitely a heavy metal band. And yes, his voice is amazing.
It’s not the largest. The largest is actually Rod Stewart. 3.5 million reported
Not the largest but seeing the guards and helicopters flying just above the crowd gives a surreal vibe to the experience
you know.......this song made an quite the impact. AS Rome was speechless.
Overwhelms me every time I watch it ... which is many many times now.
If you want the heavy metal David Draiman, Down with the sickness or Stricken or The Game❤️ great live version of this on Cohen
I Second that 🤘💯
I agree Down with the Sickness
"The Sound of Silence" is a folk song. Disturbed did a slightly metal cover of it.
Usually, Disturned is hardcore. When they dropped this song some of their fans called them sellouts. One of their biggest hits.
Epic!!
Disturbed is a heavy metal band. Listen to Down with the sickness, Voices, Stricken. Look them up! EXCELLENT BAND!!!!!
ROME: AGAIN YOUR EXPRESSION IS PRICELESS!!!
I love Disturbed! They are from Chicago. David Dramain is a great singer. Listen to Down with the Sickness
Down with the sickness!
one of the original artists who created this song actually commended them for this cover.
the Simon and Gafunkel version is a Warning, the Disturbed version a Rebuke, for not heeding the warning.
im a fan of both versions and both groups/bands... :)
thank you for not stopping the video a lot. people do this so bad. you do great.
Must see the version of Sound of Silence that Disturbed did with Myles Kennedy in Austin TX. Wow ... It'lll blow your mind.
David's vocal training is in opera, which explains the reason he can hold those notes so long.
Disturbed makes GREAT covers!!!
I liked your reaction - it’s always nice to someone do reactions where they actually pause the music and comment on it, instead of them solely staring at a video👍
It's funny to me now when people react to the piercings. I've watched this video so many times I no longer notice them.
James thank you for keeping your mind open to metal we welcome everyone. 🤘🤘🤘🙈🙉🙊🤘🤘🤘
