  • New York City Ballet principal dancer Tiler Peck performs "Fascinatin' Rhythm" from 'Who Cares?' by legendary choreographer George Balanchine, as a tribute to 2014 Kennedy Center Honoree Patricia McBride.
    The Kennedy Center Honors is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture.
    Iconic ballerina Patricia McBride was honored alongside Al Green, Tom Hanks, Lily Tomlin and Sting. Her three-decade long dancing career brought to life countless works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, with a list of partners that included Edward Villella, Arthur Mitchell, Jacques d’Amboise and Mikhail Baryshnikov. She was New York City Ballet's youngest principal dancer, and was the original dancer of this "Fascinatin' Rhythm" solo from 'Who Cares?', which Balanchine created just for her.

      She became a principal dancer after only two years?! That's absolutely incredible! Tiler here got to that ranking in four years, two is just unheard of nowadays

    One thing I love about these Kennedy Center Honors videos is the reactions & looks on the faces of the other honorees during a tribute. Sting, Lily Tomlin & Tom Hanks, like countless others, are bowled over by the talent they are watching onstage. Also, watch as Ms. McBride very, very, very subtly counts the beats of the music with a slight tilt of the head or flutter of an eyelid.

    I have to say, Peck absolutely blows McBride out of the water for this piece. McBride's version is at 26:53 of this video. In fairness, she was already in her 40s.

      I love Tiler's version, just fabulous. McBride dances it as Mr B set it, so the way Patty did it is what Balanchine created. Tyler has a bit of her own take on it. I've watched the Balanchine Foundation Archival tape of McBride explaining, demonstrating, and coaching this piece. She was very specific about what Mr B said to her and asked of her. Tiler is wonderful, don't get me wrong - but I can't agree that she 'blows McBride out of the water'.

    • @jeanienguyen1543
      @jeanienguyen1543 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      R1234 H5678 I love vaganova style but I mean what's shown here isn't exactly classical ballet haha

    • @Qacc6
      @Qacc6 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      The Vaganova trained dancers need to broaden their idea of ballet. Tiler can do all the classical repertoire with her sparkling technique, but she can also do things like this that Russian dancers would probably flail at if they don’t ask the music to be slowed down.

      I love me some Vaganova gals, but Tiler is simply amazing.

    • @leticiaperes1962
      @leticiaperes1962 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      There are different styles of ballet, Vaganova is one style, Balanchine is another. There isn't a style that is more ballet than the other, they're all ballet, only different from each other.

    • @catalinaguzmancantante212
      @catalinaguzmancantante212 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      do you mean classical ballet? you do know there are different types right?
