I've learnt two things from billionaires: to diversify your investments and to constantly put your money to work. This year, I hope to make money investing roughly $88k of my savings in equities.

That is accurate. In my opinion, diversifying one's investments is the best course of action because it can lessen the effects of a market collapse. Examples of diverse asset classes are bonds, real estate, and foreign equities.

I completely agree. The first $100k was the toughest, and I didn't really start seriously investing until I was 30 back in 1998. Today, I'm 55 and have a decent $1.2M nest egg thanks to my fa Dianne Sarah Olson. After learning all of this, my only regret is not starting earlier when I was 25. It may not seem like much but those extra 5 years are the most important.

Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Instead of trying to predict and prognosticate the stability of the market and precisely when the change is going to happen, a better strategy is simply having a portfolio that’s well prepared for any eventually, that’s how some folks' been averaging 150K every 7week these past 4months according to Bloomberg.

My professor once phrased compounding interest like this:
“Its a opportunity cost. If you by a corvette now it will only depreciate. If you invest the money you would have bought the corvette with, it can turn into a million dollars years down the road.
So, a corvette now = $1M in 30 years if the action to invest is not taken. Thats a big cost for a lack of patience and the understanding of compounding interest.

Who here buys a corvette for 100k though lol? The scenario's point stands as an example of compound interest but:
      1. You can get a secured collaterized low interest loan for the corvette. At 3% interest, the interest cost on the car is 3k per year or less.
      2. If you purchase the right corvette with the right deal and sell after 1 year of ownership plus not place too many miles on the car. You can signficantly reduce depreciation.

The advice in the video is excellent and true for the typical American. It was easier for me to get richer after my first $100k with the method of diversification for my investment portfolio. Like spread my investments across different asset classes to manage risk. I focused on capital appreciation through high-risk, high-reward assets. Income-oriented strategies target regular income from dividend stocks and bonds. Used the value strategy to seek out undervalued assets for potential long-term gains. Worked magic!

This is really not as difficult as many people presume it to be. It requires a certain level of diligence, no doubt, which is something ordinary investors lack, and so a financial advisor often comes in very handy. That is how people are able to make such huge profits in the market.

It took over 3 years to hit $100k, cheerfully accepting 10% returns. The 2nd $100k took a little over a year once I switched to growth stocks. Once you're getting good returns, you start throwing everything at it. Get a bonus? Invest it. Get a raise? Invest it. Tax refund? Invest it. Fiancee returns your ring? Invest it. ;-)

I realized that the secret to making a million is making better investment. I always tell myself you don't need that new Car or that vacation just yet and that mindset helps me make more money invest:ng. For example last year I invested 70k in blue chip stocks and crypt0 s (with the help of my advisor of course) and made about 380k, but guess what? I put it back and traded with her again and now I'm rounding up close to a million. Delayed gratification always pays off

Excellent points. I'm a big fan of saving and keeping my finances in check. In my opinion, there is no value greater than knowing you have breathing room and no need to panic if you need to change jobs or get laid off. I'm still working on my first million, and I still have a ways to go, but it's true that once you start building up a solid investment portfolio, it really helps your money to continue to grow. It feels good when you start seeing your investment money increase at a point that it matches or beats the rate at which you can contribute at (but it's still important to keep contributing).
When I first started, I opened a brokerage account and put $500 on a stock that dropped in value by nearly 50%, and I sold. I felt stupid for not knowing more. So after spending some time doing research, I became a big fan of investing in ETFs like the S&P and the DOW that have historically had about a 10% increase averaged out over their years in existence. At first, it feels slow and pointless, but after taking on more raises, and continually investing (after of course paying off high-interest debt -- for me that is debt more than 5-7% and having a good emergency fund), it started really growing and being fun to watch grow. We're currently in a bear market, and it takes more effort to stomach this period while investing, but even during this time, I still have far more than had I not invested it and just left it in a bank account (or worse, just spent it).
There's no really secret sauce. Just the fact that most people don't find it fun to live below their means, save the extra money and potentially take on more work to get extra money (either by getting promotions or by taking on second jobs).

Real estate is very well worth considering as part of your approach. But same thing, you have to learn learn learn about it before making a foray. Due diligence is the watchword of real estate (or any investing).
Consider investing in things you have knowledge about, in companies that you admire.
Never put all of your eggs in one basket, and never believe you are financially secure with only one income stream. The more income streams you have, the more you are protected from the vicissitudes of life and the economy. The more diverse your portfolio/holdings are, the less at risk you are from a sector crash or collapse of one industry.
Staring a small business is not for the faint of heart, it's for the determined, focused, driven, hard worker who is willing to work long hours, sacrifice time off, and constantly research and learn and recover from setbacks and failures. But building a small business can result, eventually, in having the cash flow and/or asset that launches you to another income level entirely. I started in 2002 making about $10 an hour. In 2021 I now own four properties in California, due to the success and cash flow of my business and the business my wife and I started, grew, made successful and then sold to a VC company. Was it worth the blood sweat and tears? Oh yes.
I wouldn't discard investing in everyday mutual funds as "being unsophisticated" or "for the masses". I have probably 30% of my entire net worth in mutual funds. They have done well. Some depend utterly on them, having zero knowledge of investing and not wanting to take undue risks.
Buy low and sell high, investing is a marathon, not a sprint. I watched friends sell off in the 2008 crash. I shrugged and didn't sell anything, in fact I bought more heavily into the market after the crash (I bought low). 18 months later all my stock had recovered and then continued to grow. Once in a while I'll sell. If I think a stock is very very high.
Don't be a rear-view mirror investor. You bought shares of XYZ at 15, sold at 70, and then five years later XYZ is at 200? Whatever, learn what you can from this, but don't regret the fact that you made profit and don't change a successful solid plan based on an anecdote. Similarly don't dwell on losses, LEARN from them. Pain is either something you elect to drive you down, or something you elect as a harsh TEACHER. Make pain your teacher, not a block on moving forward.
Read the book "The Richest Man in Bablyon", then read it again. Once you have read it twice, either make or review your budget.
The news and much "financial news" like Motley Fool often gives very misleading or bad advice. Do your own analysis, your own investigation, come to your own conclusions. Don't trust the opinions of pundits, they are often paid to render these opinions and certainly do not care what happens to you if you follow their advice/info. Sources like Chris Invests are fun and helpful, but again, do your own research, keep your own counsel. This particular video gives an EXTREMELY valuable insight: the first 100K is absolutely the hardest. After that, your progress starts to speed up. The more progress you make, the more potential you have of things speeding up. You do eventually hit a limit where to how much you can put your money to work, but if you do (I may never reach those heights), hey, well freaking done to you!!
Hope these tips help you as much (or more) as they have helped me. Citation: February 2002 net worth of 0.00. December 2021 net worth of 3M. And that's having made a lot of laughable, dumb mistakes over time, or some mistakes that "everyone else" made, remember the paragraph where I say let pain be your teacher, because pain will show up.

The first step is to live below your means and save. This alone is difficult for most people - either they earn very little money or they have a lot of expenses. For the average person, its a behavioral problem more than anything. Luck also plays a role as some life events are very financial burdensome. Family and friends can be either a hindrance or accelerator.
Accumulating $100K in the bank suggest that you've been able to successfully budget and save. You created a disciplined habit which momentum can carry into the future. As the wealth accumulates, passive income grows and its much easier to live life and breathe. Once passive income reaches a point where you can quit your job, then its just a matter of keeping expenses low enough to maintain growing wealth.

Why do you think for most people the problem is behavioral? With almost half the working adults making 50K or less but housing costing in the 300K - 400K range there may be an income or expenses problem for many. I do not understand why people ignore income as the most important part of having money to save and invest. I have to have an income that pays me more than my expenses every year that is why after 14 years I have 39K now. IF I had been unlucky enough I would be broke or in debt without the income right?

      @Basta11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@donaldlyons17 I agree. Nothing in what I said contradicts what you say. I said some people make too little, some have large expenses. However, for most average people (around average income average expenses), they have some ability to save (even a little). Most important is that they do it consistently - seldom living beyond their means and acquiring non-productive debts.
Its not easy, but its a matter of discipline and delayed gratification - behavioral habits that can be cultivated in oneself.
Some people will also have bad luck in terms of financially downturns, which is another reason to save and/or get insurance.
Life is tough man. Having 39K is an achievement, I'm sure there are people you know with similar incomes who have 0 right before payday for no good reason other than the habit of spending it all.

Instead of figuring out why his formula can’t work for you, try figuring out what you CAN do in your situation. Don’t make enough? Figure out how to make more. Can’t save $250 a week? My first $100,000 took 16 years of commitment, with setback to zero after setback. Didn't spend my first $100k because it was so hard to get. The second $100k only took 4 years. My first million 8 years later. My second million 10 years after that. Compound interest was the key to my success. Working on my third million but low interest rates are killing me.

    It's actually quite easy:
1st: Start young - as soon as possible
2nd: Try to live as poorly as you can. What is the smallest and cheapest apartment/room/house/flat you can get live inn? Buy as much as you can second hand
3rd: Only 50% of your income should be for used for your needs and wants. 30% should go into a savings accounts. 20% should be invested (stocks, real estate, ...). Do these transactions immediately after you get your paycheck.
    Here are some general tips:
Cheap Android phone > expensive iPhone
Learning new skills / languages > video games

The first 100k seems to be so hard for some because you're basically still setting up a foundation for your portfolio to stand on and then the latter comes easier since now you're familiar with diversity ,where to place your funds and your investments compound. I made my first million from going diverse, mainly stocks. an allocation fund, S&P500 and coins ..with the help of my F.A Susan Kay Mack handling my portfolio it's been a year of steady growth.

I find the first $1mil in cash equivalent is difficult. Asset wise I already have probably 1.5 mil but they are in house or retirement or tax heavy instruments. So really what I have on hand that I can spend without tax withhold is just $100k and that’s nothing these days.

The fundamental reason its harder is because its a much larger scale. 1 - 100,000 (means 1*100,000 = 100,000), 100,000 - 1,000,000 (means 100,000 * 10). In these examples one increase is 100,000 times larger and the other is only 10 times larger.

I get the concept of investing but don't forget to live. In my youth, I had fast bikes, fast cars and girlfriends that would stop traffic.
If I had done none of that I would probably be a multimillionaire. Do I regret that... what do you think!
I didn't start investing until my early forties and my portfolio now sits around £360k ($489k) jumped 10k last week which was nice.
If that $100 meal was with a good friend or a beautiful woman I would never regret it, you have to invest in memories too.

I don't understand why people don't talk about this as well. I love to eat and travel with my wife, and I don't regret any money spent on memories with those I love. When we die, our assholes get stuffed with cotton, not dollar bills.

I did similar. travelled. learned languages. made friends around the world. Started saving 2 years ago. I'm slow but steady. 1/4 of the way there at 47 but more importantly my plan for becoming rock solid has fun built in! let's live! (fun includes hot women btw :)

This is so hard when young, I wish all high schools and colleges had a required personal financial responsibility class to teach us the basics. But no the system teaches us to work laboriously in unfair and/or underpaid situations until we figure it out.

I just sold a property in Portland and I'm thinking to put the cash in stocks, I know everyone is saying its ripe enough, but Is this a good time to buy stocks? How long until a full recovery? How are other people in the same market raking in over $450k gains with months, I'm really just confused at this point.

Yes, a good number of folks are raking in huge 6 figure gains in this downtrend, but such strategies are mostly successfully executed by folks with in depth market knowledge/professional

A lot of folks downplay the role of advisors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to $850k.

There are a lot of independent advisors you might look into. But i work with Carol Pasol Lewis and I have been working together for nearly four years, and she is excellent. You could proceed with her if she satisfies your discretion. I endorse her.

Great simple and truthful approach. I am still creeping up to the 100k but did become extra motivated once I hit 50k last year as was the most I ever had in an account. Since then I throw every spare $20 ,$50 or $100 that shows up right away before I reconsider on some toy or something. I’m looking likely bar a big crash to hit 100k next year but will probably just keep up the same routine, one I should have stuck to when I started my IRA 20 years ago but barely contributed. Now I am maxing the IRA plus some, and as am in my 50s, I am still on growth investments to make the more risky compounding pay off another decade or two from now. Thanks for the video!
