    I love it! I used to work at a high-end audio boutique called Ecologic Ear in Des Moines back in the mid-70’s. They were the regional ARC dealer and carried the Magneplanar Tympani line. Incredibly natural sounding panels.

    Nice system. I have been eyeing the HIFi Rose streamer. What are your thoughts? TH-cam sucks for audio because of the compression. I can only image how this system sounds. It’s nice to see that companies like Magnepan takes in older speakers and upgrade them.

    Heard the Tympany's back in the 80s. We played the helicopter part of Pink Floyd the Wall. Impact was awesome. It did suffer from the Maggy veil of that generation. I am wondering if these rebuilds have the tweeter and mid from the 3.7s.

    Hey, I just got some Tympani III. Is it possible to have them upgraded the way these were? How much did Magnepan charge to do (whatever they did) to these IV?

    • @fyrebolt
      @fyrebolt 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Magnepan offers support on all their models. Assuming the mylar is free of tears you are good to upgrade or rebuild them. Shipping to and from along with labor can be many times the cost of what you picked them up for. I'd suggest getting a kit to rebuild the parts you need if you have time. That's the tracing, sock, and possibly the crossover. Not sure about 3, but the 4a gives option to upgrade tweeter to what's in their 20.7 and 30.7 for a cheap cost. The tweeter upgrade would need to pull a capacitor out of the crossover, but result should be glorious. I've hung up this project due to my current smaller room dimension

  • @michaelgarnett832

    Did they change physical proportions of the tymp during rebuild - thought three panels each - slightly wider slightly shorter? I heard them in 1979 at lyric hifi w janis subs - with all Levinson class A w reel to reel

    With respect and not knowing how the music was recorded, this demo doesn't even approach what T-IVa's can achieve. And not just in terms of bass and dynamics, but spooky action 3D imaging like I have never heard before in my life. It's like the most palpable and uncanny imaging you have ever heard from mini monitors on stands, but truly life size. Also expansive depth and width, whether orchestral or atmospheric recordings from Wagner to Pink Floyd. Having owned several pairs of Magneplanars since I was a kid, T-IVas for 20 years, electrostatics, Apogee ribbons, ATC monitors, Sonus Faber etc - there is nothing that even comes close. There is a catch however which is why most of them languish on the used market for nothing. They usually need a VERY big room and they need to be way out into a big room and ideally, several feet away from both the rear (front) and the side walls. I have had mine in two rooms - one 17 by 22 and another was a gilded age music room with round corners, about 28 x 28 where both rooms had 10 to 12 foot ceilings. But neither of them was really quite big enough. After that inches if not centimeters of dialing them in will make critical and significant differences. They are enormous and heavier than they look, which makes them tedious to move and to dial in the position. Stands such as myesounds make a big difference and are not cheap while intentionally making them even heavier. Further to expansive imaging, they can work best (counterintuively) along the long wall of a rectangular room. This demands further enormity to the room in order to best position the speakers and your listening chair while firing across the short wall. And as you can read about on planar asylum, many long time Magneplanar fans will tell you they need tubes on the mids and the highs, and even better if biamped and then actively crossed over to monstrously powerful solid state monoblocks for the bass panels. There, the price can easily shoot up to six figures. But then, yes, you will most certainly have one of the best systems around and an iconic classic speaker that deserves to be on any short list of best speakers in the history of audio.

  • @fullranger3435
    @fullranger3435 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, you might say I'm just a prick (and then I'd argue that I'm just an imaging freak) but what I notice from the go is that the sticks on the drums/hats sound disproportionate. Like two large hands hitting two large sticks (larger than life would be another, more welcome description). They sound nice, no disagreement here, but when I hear something like this, I turn skeptical about how the system would present/picture a large scale orchestra. Might be the recording per se, might be your recording, might be the room/setting AND might also be an innate inability of tall line sources to image sharply as a point source does.
