I must say, it's a huge relief to hear someone so highly skilled as Jorbs talk about trying things and those things repeatedly not working. It's definitely the worst part of long-term STS play. I have some embarrassingly bad loss streaks that are so bad I come close to uninstalling, though I never do (been playing for years and I'm right now at 2,435 hours,).

I'm four minutes in and already this video is both relatable (200 hours in Baldur's Gate and you're feeling happy) as well as incredibly infuriating...not because of the content but because the length of the video is 1:23:46 and my autistic self weeps that it couldn't be just 1 second shorter.

not to backseat your homeownership or anything, but electric utilities in many states offer something called “net metering” for solar, meaning if your house generates more energy than you consume in a month, the utility will actually pay you for the excess. Your utility may also have rebates for things like energy-efficient heaters or even smart thermostats. I used to be an intern for a company that developed the rebate programs for the utility companies in my area. Dreadfully boring stuff, but sometimes useful lol

The interesting thing about Seattle is that it's more consistently sunny than most people, even people who live there, think. Solar panels would probably be worth the cost, depending on where you live. I'm sure there are companies that'll give you a free consultation and let you know your expected energy savings annually vs. initial investment. Get a few of those free consults and if the savings are relatively the same then you know you're not being hosed and you can make an informed decision from there.
Though if you're part of an HOA you'll want to check their bylaws on solar panels. Always call your local government to make sure there aren't any additional permits or tax shenanigans you need to deal with by getting them, too.

I live in Seattle area and had solar panels installed. It's a lot of up front cost and takes years to break even. Certainly viable for your energy needs and does eventually provide financial benefits but that's after many years of increased costs.
We produce approximately all the power we need for the year from April through September (though we got grandfathered in at a very good rate with PSE) but the panels and installation were not cheap.
