Great video, but the tempo is 158, not 79. It is for this reason the song has a similar feeling to: Hey Ya - Outkast Shake it Off - Taylor Swift Happy - Pharrell Williams All those songs also are around the 160 mark too. Peace
I've seen a couple of comments pointing out that this track is closer to 160 bpm, not 79. In Middle 8's defense, though, many bpm trackers - Virtual DJ, Serato, etc. - have trouble with tracks in certain BPM ranges. That's why those programs come with "x2" and "/2" correctors. Trap and drum & bass are notorious for having their tempos halved or doubled by these programs. So, I'm not surprised the tempo is off here. It's an easy enough mistake to make.
A fantastic indie band that will sadly go down as a one hit wonder. It got them the attention they deserved! Such an underrated band. Radio stations snubbed them for years, and even they couldn’t resist. Iconic hit that will be looked back on with fond memories!
Yeah, I just got into them a few weeks ago, and it was Feel It Still that did it, but then I listened to their entire catalogue and this band is AMAZING. The masses cannot be relied upon for much.
@@zoomingby I’d heard their name before but never paid much attention until Feel It Still started spreading in the states. By the time it got over here I was already loving Woodstock!
I remember seeing Portugal. The Man as a indie punk band opening up for some of my favorite artists back in the early 2000s. I've seen them live in a room of 10 or so people. Its cool that they landed No. 1 on the charts with "Feel it Still".
There’s a Norwegian band called Sløtface that played a concert on top of a mountain a few years ago for a group of youth activists who were protesting a mining company from dumping waste in the fjords. It’s documented in their video clip for the song sponge state. Also I just really love their music and would love for you to check them out
I agree with doing the story of Portugal. The Man. Nearly all of their albums have a different sound while still being very much their own sound. Their newest being more of a pop record than any before. I feel like it could make a very interesting video
The most important thing you need to land a hit in the charts is production. Feel It Still sounds nothing like PTM has ever recorded before production-wise. The drums sound completely different, a lot more beat-heavy and danceable than usual, and there are a ton of little electronic elements and vocal shifts used too which is very common in pop songs, while the vocals are recorded and layered very cleanly and polished. Also the instrumentation is very important - if they replaced the brass section in the middle of the chorus with a guitar or so, it would probably lose the appeal for many listeners. Brass elements have also been used in some other pop songs recently like Dua Lipa's New Rules.
Another EXCELLENT video! Been watching your channel from day 1 and I am so impressed with your content. You have a knack for covering bands I love as well. Having followed them for 10 years now it is wild seeing Portugal The Man get launched in to massive top 40's fame. I do kind of like that, amazing hits can't fully be engineered. There are guidelines, production flourishes (I think the production was a huge part of Feel It Still's success), but no hard and fast rules and formula - it all comes down to an organic moment of inspiration.
Neat video, but i would say that the tempo of Feel it Still is double time of the 79bpm you said. It sounds more like you put the click on 2 and 4 instead of all the beats.
Ziggy HunkSpunk See I had this same thought too. I even asked some friends, did some more research to try and find out why it isn’t 158bpm. Everywhere I looked it said it was 79bpm. Something to do with rhythm vs tempo.
As a drummer I 100% agree. I would count it as double what they said in the video. Otherwise you’re basically saying the drum track is going double time.

loved the breakdown. two thoughts i had: feel it still is 79 BPM but the drumming gives the feel of double time, which would put it just under 160, still in the mold of a lot of these other hit songs. i am constantly speeding up and slowing down the BPM on my tracks to find the right fit for mood and danceability. i think 80-90 BPM is becoming more acceptable as hip hop has started to permeate the higher end of the charts. it certainly easier on diction, it's bouncy in a way that a track at say 120 BPM might feel a little breathless, and it lends itself well to being sped up in a remix, which we've seen become a huge part of a hit song's vitality, even giving it a second life sometimes.
In from alaska, they are from palmer Alaska, in 2010, they did a concert for 8 bucks!!!! They came home for the holidays in the december. Been a fan for 12 years
Like the choice of song for analysis. This song sounds sounds manufactured, like an AI's first attempt at making a hit song. The hook/ bassline is almost exactly the same as 'Mercury' by Duffy, maybe the same writer? The main Verse is sample of the Mavelettes 'Mr Postman. So they mixed these together and wrote some lyrics, which are repetitive, sexual and require a low reading/writing age, and are 'millennial woop' filled. The vocals also sound very Motown without the vocal range.Interesting how a lot of modern manufactured music sample the hits from the Motown factory... (Please note: Millennial Woop is a concept, I'm not hating on any generation).
I had to comment on this, youre completely wrong about this song. Sexual? Where? He is talking about his daughter...and they write all their songs, and borrowed only a few notes from the marvelettes - it was recorded in one take as well, as a random jam. John writes amazing lyrics you should actually check it out, theyve been a band a long time and worked hard to get to where they are. They literally have 0 other songs that sound like this
Interesting stuff. Old man here of 25yrs+ in Radio. I think there's another "grabber" to add to the list. Start the song right into the chorus - Brick House, All about that Bass, You got nothing I want (Cold Chisel), Can't buy me love, Paperback Writer, Ain't no sunshine, Rag Doll (Aerosmith) Janies got a gun, Best of you... On air staff love that sh*t.
smooth video, with some intriguing points made, but I believe the real reason they made a unique-sounding hit is because they didn't go in to the studio to write a hit; they just made quality music and people caught on to that.
Something I noticed between seemingly out of nowhere radio hits, they tend to have a single catchy riff/bassline that's prevalent and on its own in the beginning and the songs tend to be less compressed with only a few distinct instruments/sounds.
I remember when Portugal the man was a tiny band. Me and my family have always been huge fans. We were so surprised and happy when feel it still took off. If you liked feel it still, you will love their other stuff. Check them out.
2:24 Tell that to Death Cab For Cutie with I Will Possess Your Heart. Yet again, the song didn't chart nearly as much as Feel It Still. It did reach #1 on the Adult Alternative Songs and #6 on the Alternative Songs, but that was ten years ago.
I have actually discovered Portugal. The Man not by Feel It Still, but by Number One. Then I heard Rich Friends and fell in love with that song. I then listened to the rest of their CD and instantly became a fan. I let my dad listen to the CD and he told me he heard them before, because he heard Feel It Still on the radio. Feel It Still is a great song, but I hope a lot of others listened to the whole album, because there's not one song on there that I don't like.
Great analysis! I love how these features describe how a song becomes a hit. However, it is these same features that cause a song to last fairly short. Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen breaks about every rule of becoming a hit. Way longer than four minutes, written by only four men (although we could state it was mostly written by Freddie alone), it doesn't have a danceable tempo, it doesn't have a chorus, the song title isn't mentioned once, the intro isn't under 20 seconds.
