A close neighbour when I was a lad ( I'm talking about 1965-69)who now is in his mid seventies had I think a later S7 or maybe an S8 from memory I thought it was 600 cc but I could well be wrong. He still had the bike until recently and his son now owns it. The very clear thing I can remember about it is that it had a low compression ratio on it and I as I think a skinny twelve year old could turn it over with my hand on the kick starter and very easily was able to start it with my foot. It was so smooth to kick over. His was a twin seat one and I remember being taken on the back of the bike for rides after I had washed and polished it! Lovely bike and the fact that it's still in his family after 55 years means he really loved it!
I have to admit that I prefer the look of S8. There is too much black on the early S7. The chrome rims, handlebars etc on the S8 really stand out. Also the clean handlebar layout is awful to use, they dropped it after two years for a good reason. But the engine is nice and they all ride well.
Sounding terribly posh 5 years ago, Michael. Suitably so, because these were bikes for the more affluent individual. Gorgeous piece of machinery, built to impress. Thanks for the tour.
Very innovative design features. The throttle reminds me of my first bike, Honda CA-95 159cc, a sliding piece traveled in a handlebar slot engaged in a helical groove under the grip. Cable ran in the bar. Good video...Dave
@@BritanniaMotorcycles Hello Michael, I surtenly will. Just looking now at your channel, as I like your style of presentation and projects, with repect towards your knowledge and skills. The bikes are wonderfull! Thanks again and please have a splendid day.
Hello Michael, I saw all of Your vids, You are doing fantastic job! Can You tell me what is the proper tickness of new Sunbeam S8 clutch plate? I'm rebuilding my S8 engine, and there in no information about this on the web. The rivets on my clutch are only 0.5 mm lover than the surface of clutch plate, so I'm considering to replace it. Happy beaming, Marcin
Hello Ruben. Get in touch with Stewarts Engineering in the UK. They are the Sunbeam people. You will be able to get spare parts, a very useful handbook and lots of information from them.
I think it would be a really cool idea to build a retro like copy of this bike and use a Polaris 800 twin like what's used in a sportsman 800 atv..good horsepower liquid cooled...on the same format...
7 years later, watching this and loving it. I learned a lot. Thank you. LOVELY bike

Beautiful bike. Much prefer these S7s with the fat tyres to the S8s (though they're gorgeous, too)! Thanks for sharing.

Possibly the best looking bike ever.
woww very good looking bike :-) thanks for sharing
They were interesting and one of those bikes that took a couple of attempts for them to get it right.
Thanks I enjoyed that. Hope you don't think it pedantic but, the designers name was Erling Poppe, not Pope.

Amigos desde Colombia temgo una moto sunbeam 500 1953
I think you are my first viewer in Columbia. Enjoy your Sunbeam.
Very nice bike, but still just a BMW copy with a different engine.
You could say that the BMW was just a copy of a Douglas, but never mind.
