  • Update 6/6/2020: On June 5th, 2020, the mall was sold to another company, thus, dropping the Westfield name. The mall is now called Meriden Mall, the 3rd name in this mall's nearly 50 year history. I'm leaving Westfield in the title, as that was the owner of the mall when this video was made.
Well, what do we have here?! A WESTINGHOUSE/SCHINDLER (*see bottom of description for info) recently MODERNIZED by OTIS.
Most of the elevator is still original; same buttons, same interior, same phone, and even the same interlocks (GAL) and sensors (KONE). HOWEVER, OTIS came in sometime around October 2012 and did a modernization of this thing by adding a new controller which supports fire service (Series 1 panels seen outside and inside the elevator). Apparent by this change is a new beep in the elevator and now call recognition. One minor touch that is pretty nice is a new door operator that is a heck of a lot smoother than the old one.
This elevator was originally installed in 1988 (around the time Westinghouse and Schindler were merging*). This and the escalators (Montgomery modded by KONE) were installed as part of a renovation of that year. The conventional elevator and escalators replaced inclined moving walkways that were original to the mall's opening in 1971.

Notes: Installed in 1988 replacing inclined moving walkways (dead serious here). Originally had bumpers. Modernized in 2012 by OTIS with the addition of a new controller, allowing fire service, and some minor touches such as a new door operator.
*Westinghouse/Schindler elevators were installed within 1988 and 1989. Around this time, Westinghouse and Schindler had something to do with this elevator. While there are GAL interlocks (a Schindler custom), there USED a Westinghouse door operator on the top of the elevator (can be heard in the beginning of this elevator). Typical Westinghouse/Schindlers have a good mix of Westinghouse and Schindler parts in them.
Although realizing these species of elevators are "mutts" or a mix of two brands, this video will still remain "OTIS-House," as it's already been established as such (and it would make the title too long). This is techinally a "Schindl-OTIS-House."

I noticed that the doors on this elevator are now quieter and doesnt make the squealing noise anymore when it opens.

When the mod was completed, a brand new door operator was put on this thing. It's much more elegant though than the squealing door.

Very interesting how they still had A few buttons left In stock. It's also rare seeing A mod like this with the series 1. Very nice find!

Awesome mod. I didn't even know they still made Series 1! It's so weird to hear that Otis beep on this elevator.

Very interesting how Otis left the fixtures alone and put A series 1 call cancel button. I thought that was discontinued but I guess not

So basically, an RT kind of elevator has a button that fully lights up, I think...

I was able to make it here yesterday to film the elevators here before Macy's closed. I also filmed a bit of mall footage.

There is an indicator but it is covered up by the inspection certificate.

I've actually wondered that too. I've taken a quick peek under the indicator at one point, but only recall seeing a "no smoking" sign underneath, didn't see an indicator. My memory is a bit fuzzy on this one, maybe it is there after all.
