Some people don't seem to understand depreciation I notice. I'm on the lookout for a Camcorder with IR to film in the dark and people are selling based on a price they paid new many years ago. E.g You can get a Canon XA11 new for 699, but if you want the older second hand XA10, the price on ebay appears to be 850 ?
Fun camera. I have the xa10. Put a proper ir filter on it an take it outside in bright light. Legitimate ir. It will also see through the skin a little bit where you can see a lot of veins and arteries. Mine unfortunately isn’t working great anymore. Shuts down intermittently and can only be used if plugged in.

I've been shopping facebook market place for "vintage" film cameras lately. It blows me away at how many people are trying to sell broken and untested cameras for the same price as a tested and refurbished prices. Who is going to risk $300 or more on a possibly broken camera?
Don't even get me started dudes be selling photogear they don't know nothing about why you selling a Pentax k1000 with no rewind spool for $400 😂 I've seen people trying to sell empty sony boxes . I've seen people selling their gear for more than Adorama and B&H they don't even know what's on sale. X t3 for $1,400 when I can buy it brand new for a grand but I love their response it usually ends with go buy it there then.
Canon S40? Hell my first digicam was the Canon S10 a 2 megapixel powerhouse! Still have it and it still works fine, the original battery, amazingly, still hold a few minutes of charge.
The Hi8 camcorder is expensive because they're rare to find a good working hi8 camcorder that can be used to play them back to digitize the tapes (and then to buy another one to do this on when yours wears out). Also... it's digital data on the tape. Not sure if you'd consider that digital but that's that. If it has a firewire port that makes it even more expensive. People pay a lot to digitize the tapes and it takes a long time since it has to play back in real time. That's moneh.
Actually, IIRC Hi8 was an analogue recording process, for the video side, but, I think, recorded digital Audio. The Digital version was, not surprisingly called Digital8 which used the DV codec (as in MiniDV). I still have my Sony DCR TR7000, which, the last time i checked, still records and plays back fine. WHich is lucky, because my neighbour here in France, has some old Digital 8 tapes which he would like to have for editing on his Mac. Yours for $1500!!!
There are infinite being sold, no one wants them, people who kept the tapes kept the recorder at least 50% of the time because these cams became outdated garbage real quick. I've seen the same insane listings the whole time on ebay, from the first year each camera became used in the early 2000's, back then they also though they could get a full refund of the price paid a whole year later by selling as "like new" in listing, no one cared and the same old bastards still are trying to get as much as they paid 20 years later, even for VHS cameras.

I feel you on the Huawei Mate 40 Pro. It interpolates the slowmo at 960 fps and 1920 fps where the Huawei P40 Pro has real 960 fps and 1920 fps. The 7,680 fps in the only one that is interpolated on the Huawei P40 Pro.

The reason for the expensive cassette ones is people digitizing their tapes. As cassette camcorders are no longer being made, and older ones are breaking, their prices go up and up. Digitize your tapes now people before they are lost to time.
