While I used to consider this my all-time favorite film until about 20 years ago, I've since backed off a bit from that stance after learning how many story elements Stephen King lifted from the 1979 film "Escape from Alcatraz" (the hardass warden, the black friend of the main protagonist, the institutionalized old guy who gets his livelihood taken away from him, the guys who try to violate the main protagonist, etc.) -- and apparently also the 1956 film " A Man Escaped" (though I still haven't seen that one).

Although set in Maine, the prison used was the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. The large main building and Cell Block 1 are now a Museum. They offer tours, can be used for special occasions, and offer overnight cell accommodations for the brave. ( haunted ) The street scenes were primarily N. Main St where the shop owners agreed to have their stores redone to fit the time period. Many still look the same. The halfway house is the Bissman Building, and still looks the same today. (It was a beer distributor, hence the name "Brewery") The store was the E and B Market on 4th Street which has been torn down. I was fortunate to be an extra con in the yard scenes. The premiere was held at Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre, a restored 1929 movie palace, before New York and Los Angeles. I volunteered working the theatre restoration. The prison was also used in the movie "Tango & Cash” and was the Russian cell block in "Airforce One". An interesting side note: In the bad winters, crows from 7 or 8 counties move into Mansfield by the hundreds due to large granaries that used to be between town and the prison. Brook's crow was a natural. The passage of time from the unfiltered Chesterfields to the filtered cigarettes offered Tommy by the warden, and the subtle aging of everyone is superb. Many people miss the subtlety of when Brooks left the prison, you see the prison through the gates, and when Red left you are looking forward over the fields toward the town. And they don't notice when the warden opens the Bible and finds the cut out, that it is the book of Exodus! I am 75 now with Parkinson's and don't get to attend movies very often. I enjoy the reaction videos on TH-cam.

There are innocent people in prisons. But I tell you, the prison system is a crime all to itself.
There are countries that make their "prison systems" about rehabilitation, and re-education, and they have extremely low rates of recidivism. They help people change and return to life, rather than finish the ruin of their lives. Reparative justice is always better than blind imprisonment.

This is the best film ever made. It has everything that a human encounters. On top of that....this film....affects and effects... everything is human nature.

Look after yourself, please, whatever you can't tell the world, it is obviously traumatic to you, and that changes any of us, For Life. It's good for you not to overshare. You therefore also understand a whole lot better, just what is really important in life. It's not wads of cash, looks, exy clothes, cars or houses. It's the friends that get you, and know you very well, the family that stand by you through everything, and the memories of great times spent with them. Leaving your whole support team in prison has to be very difficult, starting again in a very different world, would be like emigrating. When one of my Aunts got old, she said, "it's a terrible thing to outlive all your friends." All the best.

lol so Forrest or Shawshank? Love both but Shawshank nods it for me. Watch Pulp Fiction and you'll complete the 94 holy trinity.

Another film based on a Stephen King's short story. A Greene Mile and The Shining are Stephen King based too.

Ummm....being in prison brings the wrongfully-convicted comfort? Is that really what you meant to say?
Would you be comforted by living the rest of your life in prison for a crime you didn't commit?

Sometimes a movie comes along and just inspires you to speak from the heart and reach other people. Shawshank did that for you today. And it´s a beautiful thing. If you reach just one person, make someone think of something better, it´s all worthwhile. I´m lucky enough to have reached people after being inspired by a movie. It´s no joke. I´ve been told that I´ve saved lives. It´s humbling. Keep doing what you´re doing. Much love.

@ 42:09 Won't be surprised if you say much the same for Interstellar and The Green Mile. I'll think you'll enjoy those a lot. And since you like fantasy do one of Robin Williams best, "Jumanji" (1995) someday soon. Gonna check your Star Wars videos! ✌️😎

You should really watch ‘A Little Princess’ (the 1995 movie). As a father I think you’d actually really appreciate it 😊 Another emotional one, but worth it xxx

Turn your sound down [Shut Up]. Turn up the movie [Listen]. And then, and only then, will you learn about something other than the sound of your voice...
    ...Maybe???🤨
