I got kicked out of my garage by my landlord with my engine out of my car so I’ve been finishing the swap in exclusively borrowed spaces and it’s been the most painful process I’ve ever experienced. I feel Nolan’s pain!!!
“Mo’ Power Baby‼️” This reminds me of my 65 Mustang that was garaged for 12 years. Earlier this year I got it running with a friend of mine. We don’t have quite as much car knowledge as Kevin does, but we’ve put a lot of new stuff on it to get it this far. This video definitely reminded me of us starting “The Beast.” I’m glad you were able to get Nolan‘s car started. One question though, why were the wheels spinning? Shouldn’t the car be in neutral?
even if the car is not in gear, and the torque converter is not engaged, the oil in the torque converter housing is still being rotated by the flywheel (since the engine is turning), and this spinning oil is enough to rotate the propshaft and the wheels (since they are in the air and there is zero load on them they are really easy to turn).
Now just replace the 6 volt battery with a 9 volt battery and it will run for ever with no problems. (we used to do this in Upper Michigan in the winters) I'm 71 years old and can still remember my dad and uncle doing this for all there 6 volt systems.
@@SavingTheUndesireables just toss a 12 volt battery and coil in it change the bulbs add a delco alternator use the 6 volt starter they are built with heavier windings for 6 volt and handle 12 volt easily and then they crank. 6 volt sux
Like 40yrs ago, Odessa, Texas, Senior auto parts. Head parts man; you gotta 60(s) ford and need such a part. Newby says we don't stock it. Old hand, get him this Buick part. It'll work. And my 64 F100 292. I put in a Dodge radiator; had to relocate top hose, GM single wire alternator. Sweetest sounding duals on any car I've owned.
9 Volt is way too hard to find anymore. My Grandfather was the Service Mgr. @ the Chevy Dealer in Munising, MI (UP) and they didn’t use 9V. I would just convert to 12 V probably also to an alternator setup.
When timing a car with a point distributor before starting, there is a way to get it real close. Get number one cylinder on the compression stroke. Once you are sure that it is on the compression stroke turn the engine over by hand and line up the timing marks that you are going to use. The rotor should be very close to the number one terminal if the distributor has been installed correctly. Pull the number one wire from the distributor cap just far enough to create a gap. Apply power to the ignition system. Turn the distributor until you see or hear a spark jump from the cap to the number one spark plug wire. That's it, lock it down. (Of course the other end of the spark plug wire must be grounded.) It has been my experience that if you check it with a light later on you'll be within 2 degrees of where you lined up the marks.
Good tip. Can also be done with a 12-volt test light hooked to ground and the ignition turned on. Probe the lead from the coil to the distributer, turn the distributer and when the light goes out the points are closed. Old motorcycles were done this way.
That's a great trick I usually use for points systems, but more often than not when I have to install a distributor it's usually a dura spark or hei on camera! In the case of this car we were just out of time
@@JunkyardDigs The first time I read about timing a car that way was in the owner's manual for a 1948 Buick that I picked up at an old car swap meet many years ago. It only works with point systems though because years later when I had a hot rod with MSD ignition it didn't work. Luckily by that time I had enough experience that I could get it in the ballpark and the car would start without flaming up through the carburetor or backfiring in the exhaust.
With all the times that Kevin says, “Mook just pointed out...” her nickname should be Dr. Detail. The Further Adventures of Detective Digs and Dr. Detail. Also, this car is awesome.
As a Donut fan, this was such a blast to watch. Kevin is very knowledgeable on these era of cars. Went to go watch he GNX video and was really fun to see that poor car back up and running and also seeing Dad drop some knowledge on the car’s prior history just by some simple inspection.
Seeing Nolan's reactions and the energy are EXACTLY why we do the things we do :) Well done you two well done delivering joy all the way out in California!
California can heck off. They want to ban internal combustion from the roads by 2050. I can see what they are trying to do as they ban the sale of new internal combustion vehicles by 2035. Amazing people don't do more to challenge this.
@@VintageCars999 when you brainwash people into thinking internal combustion and older cars are the enemy, you can get away with stuff like this unchallenged.
Guys - if you really want to keep your old iron running long-term, you better look into ways of operating it with substantially reduced environmental impact, today. By reclaiming past resource usage, you're already off to a decent start, just the amount of dead dinosaurs pumped out of the ground would have to be reduced dramatically, and preferably without upsetting people's food supply and other such fun stuff. Synthetic fuels may be one avenue to explore, this may still be feasible for a somewhat niche hobby. It's probably not going to get as bad as the 1890s when people had to buy petrol in drugstores, not any time soon. There is little doubt that some drastic changes in resource usage in all areas of life will be necessary in the next decade or two - better hit the ground running now if you want to be ahead. Conserving resource usage by keeping old equipment running and adapting it to new uses and requirements is likely to be just as important as introducing fancy new technology in pulling it all off, so that's not a bad set of skills to have at all. The better we do the more likely people are still going to be able to enjoy old cars in 50 or 100 years or now, instead of being preoccupied with war, famine and migration.
@@PileOfEmptyTapes I'm on board with synthetic fuels, despite what the greenies say they're fully invested in battery electrics so it's hard to believe what they say about anything else. I don't believe oil will go away for a long time but if we do get on synthetic fuels today we'll have an alternative option to keep internal combustion vehicles around.

I'm WAY late too this video, but I had to chime in. My very first car was, no joke, a '52 Chrysler. Had to let it go a couple decades ago, but I could still recite you its VIN from heart. Best of luck to you Nolan. Simple as it is, that 6 volt positive ground system will probably give you years of puzzle solving enjoyment. I can already suggest that you check out your voltage regulator. Blew mine out once getting a 12V jump. That 331 Hemi. The Fluid-Torque drive "automatic" with its clutch and lift-off to shift up, floor-it to shift down. The drive-with-your-pinky overpowered power steering. You're in for hoots and headaches.
When that motor fired for the first time, pure excitement is something you can’t fake, and you can see so much of it in Nolan right there. MOPOWAHBABEH!!!

@@JunkyardDigs "Putting old cars back on the road" is a wonderful thing to be all about, but you miss a little by failure to acknowledge that the main reason that most people do so is not nostalgia or hot rodding, but to save money, so to some extent you neglect economy cars. You have done some fairly efficient sports cars like the Fiat Spider and MG Midget, but there are old cars out there that are just as efficient but seat 4, like the Datsun 210 and F10 for example, plus Pintos etc, whose engines are similar to Mook's Ranger engine. Anyway, please do economy just a bit more, and that includes minding the prices of parts and tools you use.
I remember seeing cars like this *everywhere* back when I was a kid. They're very simple and easy to work on. This was when the term "shade tree mechanic" was often used.
This engine was the mainstay of Top Fuel drag racing in the '50s. One time Don Garlits blew his motor with only a couple of rounds to go. He talked a spectator with a new Chrysler into loaning him its engine. Motor out, cam in, supercharger on, into the rail, back to racing. Was the engine the one in this video? It could have been, who knows?
After some thought, I"d like to review your processes on getting old cars started. First, if you use a carburetor cleaner to start the car, you have the added benefit of being able to put the spray tube down the carburetor bowl vent to fill the bowl. This does mandate that you use a brand of carburetor cleaner that a car can run on, but I find Gumout or berryman B-12 do nicely. When trying to fire off a diesel, penetrating oils like WD-40 or Deep-Creep are excellent, especially on glow plug diesels where ether is an explosion hazard . Brake cleaners often contain toluene and have dangerous fumes when burned. I put a few liner assemblies in detroit diesel two strokes because the operator put too much ether in it and then got it to ignite. Second, to check the ignition system on an older car,put your test light on the negative side of the coil and crank it. If it just burns dimly, the points/ignition module are/is defective. If it flickers, the coil is being turned on and off by points or module. This isn't meant to be a gripe, but hopefully sharing some knowledge. Great video, and Kudos for helping a friend in need. All the best to you and Mook.

Before you hook up all the electrical components; That car is a POSITIVE ground. It’s presently connected backwards. (And put zinc additives in the oil) 😜
@@vinno97 my very first car at 14 years old, in 1994, was a ‘54 Dodge. I’ve had about 70 antique cars since then. Many old MOPARS! I usually dump an 8 volt battery in place of the 6 volt. It spins it up faster and doesn’t require much modification (if any) to the electronics to function normally. But, they are all positive grounds until 1956.
Donut should hire Kevin and Mook as new hosts. Perfect fit. They can do how to's on junkyard and low budget restorations. How to source parts from yards, how to refurbish them, how to cope with none of it working....lol.

I freakin love this car, every old car has its own history and character. I’m a mopar guy but could resist picking up my 1950 Pontiac, I’ve always been a slut for straight 8s and it’s gonna be a fun project
Brilliant the way you focused in on that clogged oil filter, which stopped oil pressure in the system. The average bear wouldn't have even thought of that, rather us common folks would have dropped in the distributor, rigged the coil, topped off the oil, and let her rip. I watch all of these "will it run" videos on TH-cam, and finding that clogged oil filter showed a depth of understanding well above most of your peers.
From the glimmer of hope little "pop-pops" to being able to idle on it's own, I just loved how giddy that made Nolan! I know the feeling, and it is magnificent!
That was awesome to watch. People are stumped by distributors and points and condensers these days. Friend of mine took her triumph spitfire for annual inspection, the car stalled on the ramps, they couldn't restart it so they started playing with the distributor and put it back in 180 degrees out. Then called her to tell her that her cars broken and they don't know what's wrong.... I guess they couldn't find the obd 2 port.
So happy for nolan. He's been talking about how he loves and hates that car so much. Watching his face light up was amazing. He's a cool guy in person also fron what I hear.
50k was the average life span of those older motors. But then, people weren't driving as far as we do today. So that was a pretty long time for them to last.
I’m from California and use to cars with minimal rust even with classic cars like this one. So I’m always shocked when I watch these videos and see an 80s car with rust. Keep up the good content.

even if the car is not in gear, and the torque converter is not engaged, the oil in the torque converter housing is still being rotated by the flywheel (since the engine is turning), and this spinning oil is enough to rotate the propshaft and the wheels (since they are in the air and there is zero load on them they are really easy to turn).
Now just replace the 6 volt battery with a 9 volt battery and it will run for ever with no problems. (we used to do this in Upper Michigan in the winters) I'm 71 years old and can still remember my dad and uncle doing this for all there 6 volt systems.
Thank you for the tip Lary!
Where do you get a 9 volt battery? Also, they are saying nothing but the starter is hooked up, but the 6 volt coil is hooked up!
I would seriously watch that if they did a TH-cam channel by that name. 🙂
I love Nolans dedication to this car. It filled me with joy to see him so giddy and happy about this piece of history running
As a Donut fan, this was such a blast to watch. Kevin is very knowledgeable on these era of cars. Went to go watch he GNX video and was really fun to see that poor car back up and running and also seeing Dad drop some knowledge on the car’s prior history just by some simple inspection.

I gotta say there’s lots of ways to fire up a “revival “ certain engines though you do everything to make sure nothing gets hurt! You guys nailed it!
Seeing Nolan's reactions and the energy are EXACTLY why we do the things we do :) Well done you two well done delivering joy all the way out in California!
J D: “Our greatest joy is helping get old cars back on the road.”
California EPA: Constantly trying to get old cars off the road.
Good job J D!
And thusly our largest enemy is the California EPA 😎

I always love a good revival, especially if it’s with friends. I’m for sure gonna continue watching in this channel
I be "shade tree"
A good shade tree mechanic can save you thousands, even today.

It wouldn’t really change anything, it was in neutral first off and the starter not gonna change depending on what gear it’s in smh Alan cmon now
