I'm confused why bringing someone off the bench for the last 10 minutes to score a goal is somehow the definitive question of greatness - what about the previous 80 minutes?!

There's no question Messi's mentality is just as driven as Ronaldo's, which because of his level of natural ability and introverted personality gets overlooked. Talent is one thing but you don't get to the level Messi has and remain there without the determination and hunger has. Like Ronaldo, he wants to play every game and though he's a lot more of a team player, he also wants to be on the scoresheet each game. To be considered the best 2 footballers ever and both having been at the top for 15 years they obviously both have both in abundance
Yeah, you need both talent and hard work/winning mentality to be considered one of the greats. The phrase ‘Hard work beats talent if talent doesn’t work hard’ isn’t accurate to be honest, sometimes talent alone can straight carry an athlete as unfair as it may seem at least for some time- take Hazard for example, insane talent in the Prem and his teammates admitted he slacked in training but on the pitch he was a beast as he could win a game on his own by creating or scoring. Nowadays that isn’t the case for him lol but the point still stands, if you don’t have talent, then it doesn’t matter how hard you work, you’ll always fall short of greatness as there’s no foundation there, you’ll be good at most but not great...like Fred for example: Fred works hard, Fred puts in 100% on the pitch and...Fred is still shit. Likewise if you don’t work hard or have a winning mentality, you won’t have the longevity and discipline needed to keep your body in top form and the muscle memory/drills would have helped you in abundance in any on-pitch scenario. Those who say Ronaldo is 100% just a product of hard work are just...well they’re retarded. Plain and simple. His mentality is rare and freakish but he’s as good as he is because that’s built on a foundation of natural ability, ability which is obvious if they watched him play in the Prem in his early years with the tricks, first touches etc anyway both Messi and Ronaldo have a gargantuan amount of both hard work and talent but they each depend more on one than the other as one is more naturally gifted and the other is more psychologically gifted. To say Messi doesn’t work hard is as equally stupid as saying Ronaldo doesn’t have talent.
Ian Holloway acts like Messi doesn't want to win. LOL. He acts like Messi only has the skill and no desire to win. You can't be as successful as he is without an elite mentality. These kind of arguments are straw man. Ian Holloway is what I call a typical English passion merchant manager. And English managers wonder why foreign coaches get the top jobs in English football. This is why
@hfc lmao, typical butthurt messi fans who get so insecure and try to shit on someone who doesnt like their fav player just as much as they like him. Its like he doesnt understand there is no right answer and that it will be always different opinions, and thats why everyone is right cus its opinion. these kids man....
That's not what he said, he said he never saw a man with Ronaldo's determination to win and succeed, his passion and desire gives him an edge. He didn't say Messi has no desire to win or succeed. A good example of this is the paths they chose for their careers; Ronaldo had it good in every club he's played, he was successful in United, Madrid and Juve when he left them, but he kept going onwards to find new places to succeed in and conquer If not for Barcelona's shitty board and financial crisis, Messi would've stayed there until retirement, no matter if the club saw success like it did during most of his time there, or whether it was in serious decline in his last years. Ronaldo would chase titles and try to win as much as he could that what Ian said about his desire to always win and will to succeed no matter what
Also, foreign coaches succeed because of their tactics, but they are just as passionate when it comes to desire to win and will to succeed and value it as much as any English manager does. Mourinhos a good example of this, there's literally compilations of him saying the most important things is mentality and wanting to win, Guardiola wouldn't except players that didn't give 100% of their time to the game or think of themselves as too good to certain things.
@hfc Not hurt, lol. I was making the point that plenty of players have the same determination to win as Ronaldo. Having determination to win only gets you so far without the skill. Skill will always seperate the elite players from the average players with determination. This whole "the win is all that matters 'attitude in English football which goes down to school boy level and usually starts there is partly why the England team has underperformed and barely any English players play abroad. Skill is more important and always will be. I'd say the same about Ronaldo so it's you that is in fact "hurt"
@@De3dSh0t You missed my point about foreign coaches. Of course they are passionate about winning but they don't have a win at all costs attitude that many British managers do
Surely hardwork, passion and talent go hand in hand. They are both wonders of the game and to achieve what they have, drive and passion must have been put in abundance. I dont understand why this is still an argument!
It's the same at all levels. I've coached Sunday league teams since I was 16. I'm now 22, and in 90% of the age groups I've coached, the best/most skilled player has been the most difficult. My under 14s won the league last season, and our striker who scored 40+ goals last season was such a little shit, that I didn't even attempt to change his mind when he told me he was leaving at the start of this season. Cause whenever things didn't go his way, he would belittle the other players. So now we're struggling this season, but my main focus is building the other lads confidence back up. Which is ridiculous if you consider that we've just lifted a league trophy. But that's how damaging it can be
Can we stop the narrative that Messi doesn't work hard? There's plenty of people who are naturally gifted (Ronaldo being one of them) who don't get to that level. Talent only gets you so far, you have to discipline yourself and I think this 5"7 man breaking records left and right, nevermind believing in himself since he was a child despite his size, is phenomenal.
@@heythere1386 are u dumb? its literally a know fact ronaldo has the highest work rate out of anyone on the pitch. managers have said it, other players have said it, i thought it was a well known thing about him. not saying messi doesnt work hard but hes got a lot of natural talent where as ronaldo has gotten this far purely off hard work and dedication.
Tap ins dont just come out of anywhere. It requires other players to work and set you up, you can credit Ronaldo for getting in the box but you have to credit the person who provides the assist. Messi is FAR ahead of Ronaldo in terms of assisting and plays directly leading to goals.
That’s what makes Messi greater in my opinion. The fact that he hasn’t had to change his game and is still the best footballer in the world or top 5 at this point of his career is madness. Players almost always have to adapt but Messi is the anomaly. Ronaldo has had to change his game so much because he can’t do what he used to in his earlier years, whereas Messi is still dictating games and being involved and is still getting an insane amount of goal contributions during the course of the season. I think ronaldo is great but the ronaldo at his best died about 7 years ago. Whereas I think messi’s last peak was maybe a season or two ago, which again shows how much longer he was at his peak and how much more involved he’s been within his team. You only have to look at the state of Barcelona right now and that alone shows you what Messi was having to do on such a regular basis to cover the so many deficiencies of an average team

I feel like this question is alittle bit vague, if your team is losing 1-0 with 10minutes to go the opponents are fighting to keep the lead so you can’t expect Messi who is 5’6 to wait in the box for a cross and you can’t expect Ronaldo 6’2 to be play making it doesn’t make sense. But one thing you can say is Messi would be more involved in the build up and creating chances for your team to score while Ronaldo will wait for that chance.but imo what makes Messi better is he is a playmaker who scored goals , Ronaldo may have more goals better heading ability but Messi can score dribble and split defenses with passes and these passes are not something that can be statistically recorded you have to watch and see.

For those saying the Copa America is harder to win or equal to the Euros, you are forgetting so many factors. You don't have to qualify for Copa America because there are only 10 teams and they all are guaranteed to play. You need to qualify to get into Euros first. Just by that metric alone Euros is harder to win. Also When you do qualify you have to play more games to win it because there were 16 (now 24) teams in it. Copa America has 10 teams in it and 12 when they sometimes INVITE teams from other parts of the world for bants. On top of all that the Copa America was held in 2015 AND 2016 to mark its centennial. So they literally added an extra tournament in so there has been more chances to win it. I'm not making the debate that Messi is better than Ronaldo or vice versa but to say that the Euros isn't harder to win than the Copa is plain stupid.
Messi has over 30 career trophies, not to mention countless of individual awards. To say messi doesnt work hard is imo not true. Idk, i agree that cristiano has a better work ethic. But i dont think messi is far away from him. Obviously messi is one of the hardest workers in football history , cause how can you else describe winning six ballon dors.
The question is, why would you 1 nil down and there is10min to go? Because most of the time, you play bad. The best player will kill the game in the first 80min
I don't like the '10 mins left' question. A better question is 'you have a team of 10 bang average players, you can have any player in the world to complete the team, who would you pick?'
Still a poor question. You could argue that Messi wouldn’t have had the same effect on Leicester City that Ngolo Kante did. Doesn’t mean Kante is better than Messi.
Who would i rather have as a player? MESSI every day of the week.
Ian Holloway acts like Messi doesn't want to win. LOL. He acts like Messi only has the skill and no desire to win. You can't be as successful as he is without an elite mentality. This is why

A good example of this is the paths they chose for their careers; Ronaldo had it good in every club he's played, he was successful in United, Madrid and Juve when he left them, but he kept going onwards to find new places to succeed in and conquer
If not for Barcelona's shitty board and financial crisis, Messi would've stayed there until retirement, no matter if the club saw success like it did during most of his time there, or whether it was in serious decline in his last years.
For starters maradonna more than pele, he played in dead league. Cr7 is something else in terms of goals yes 2nd to none, greatest goalscorer ever you could say. However the debate about Ronaldo or messi coming off the bench in a game, caraaager disproved that lol with Neville, also does everyone forget messi is only 2yrs younger and still producing at the highest of levels. They BOTH are and we should just appreciate them cz we will never see this again probably. Messi has also played nearly 200games less and his game ratio is higher than ronies. Messi can do it all and influence a game when needed whether that's a goal or creating. His stats are ridiculous in creating, assisting, driblels, fk and goals etc and involvement in play. Ronaldo is on the knife edge of a game and will need service yes he gets the job done and is INCREDIBLE as he always seems to pull it out the hat. Tbh any will do the job lol

Shouldn't even be a debate in the first place. The people in football who know what they're talking about say Messi.
For me it is still too difficult to pick who is better, both of them have got the upper hand on each other in different aspects like messi has the most goals in a single calendar year, Ronaldo has the most goals internationally, messi is better dribbler, Ronaldo is physically better shape etc, I just enjoy watching them both and I just can't understand people who slate them both, you would do anything to get either of them playing for your club.
Messi is a better passer and free kick taker as well. I would say at this moment in time, Messi is ahead especially after the Copa America win....
Only difficult to those who want to be bias
stop please with this international thing ....Its becoz he gets to play against shit like Luxembourg, Andorra, Estonia, San Marino, Faroe isles, Liechtenstein, Armenia, Latvia, Gibraltar, Malta, Cyprus, Kazakhstan, etc etc ... Most of Ronaldo's International goals are against teams ranked in the late 100's, 200's in world football !!!
and the goal he scores against decent teams are usually all pens or occasionally tap ins !!!
If Ronaldo was so good ( even in himself ) he wouldn't even need to play in those games and Portugal could actually start thinking of the next generation instead.
Messi has to face Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Colombia all the damn time to qualify for a big tournament...even teams like Bolivia and Venezuela would destroy all those European part time nations.
Messi still has time to catch him ..not that it matters anyway
So u r a better player cuz u hv stronger mentality. I swear ppl who prefer ronaldo always talk smth else other than the football aspects itself
