    Someday this music will be standard repertoire. It took Van Gogh over a hundred years to get the recognition that he deserved.

      In fact, there were Van Gogh exhibitions over Europe twenty years after his death (thanks to his sister-in-law) and the 1901 Salon in Paris also was a success for him. Lili Boulanger would have deserved the same, no doubt about that.

    Her music reaches to the depths and the heights of creation. She didn’t have a gift, she was the gift. Thank you 🙏

    I listen to her music and the image of her dark eyes comes constantly to my mind. She was a remarkable composer and a special beauty... 'sui generis' in all senses...

    A truly superb and highly musical performance. These works by Lili Boulanger demand to be played with such fine musicianship, which you have clearly demonstrated here, along with an intimate familiarity with them, attained through hours of practice. Well done, and keep playing!

    Really wonderful to hear these works, which I didn't know before. If only Lili Boulanger hadn't been snatched away from the world so soon. Thanks for this really brilliant performance, Duco.

    I know, all the pieces played here have such magic, they are so inspiring, and innovative ‚til date!
    But what kicks me now really is the complete piece „Cortège“ it really makes my day, its cheeky, surprising, lovely!
    Thanks for that 🤩🥰🎶

    Just watched this video by „Inside the Score“ about Lili Boulanger. She indeed was something very unusual and deserves prominence as much as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and Co. This is so beautiful and it motivates me to practice more

    Excellent performances of these marvelous pieces by a composer who deserves a much wider recognition. In particular the Thème et Variations is a magnificent composition. The obsessive repetition of the dark and somber theme makes it feel as much like a Passacaglia than a set of variations. Boulanger's piano writing is economic, concise and powerful, with organ-like sonorities reminiscent of Franck. Many thanks for making such a good case for this important repertoire !

      Excellent comments. I never really took note of its Passacaglia character until you mentioned it, but it retrospect it's unmistakeable.

    Meravigliosa musica, profonda, inquietante, consapevole!

    Félicitations sincères pour votre interprétation précise de l'oeuvre de cette auteur extraordinaire! Je partage l'admiration de Lili Boulanger, étant persuadé que son nom devrait etre répété plus fréquemment à l'heure actuelle. Il m'arrive extrèmement rarement de commettre l'utilisation d'oeuvres musicales pour mon vidéo-art autres que mes propres (étant moi-même compositeur et improvisateur musical), pourtant après avoir écouté votre interprétation, j'ai décidé d'en inclure deux morceaux (vous verrez lesquels) à un de mes travaux récents. J'espère que vous allez trouver cette emprunte adéquate. En tout cas je serais ravi de savoir votre opinion là-dessus. Mon intention était que plusieurs gens apprennent le nom de Lili Boulanger et commencent à apprécier sa musique. Merci encore une fois pour votre interprétation fidèle!... th-cam.com/video/aYKfqPkFxVk/w-d-xo.html

    Like most music of the period, too somber. Like my organist heroes Vierne, Durufle Jongen much of the time. The world wars destroyed their morale, that's my theory.

    (12:42): do I hear Philip Glass?

    • @mikekarren5010
      @mikekarren5010 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh my gosh! First off, it bothers me when anyone says "this composer sounds like...some other composer" They're artists and they speak different musical languages! What would Van Gogh say if someone said, "your work is like Piccasso." But wait, the dates are wrong, aren't they? Picasso might look like Van Gogh but never the other way around because Van Gogh was way before. I've heard that some think those kinds of comparisons show stupidity. To me, it's like comparing the ocean to the sky. They may be similar but their different languages! Second and finally, how could Lili sound like Philip when she was first (she died almost 4 decades before Philip was born)? At least get your dates right! Philip might sound like Lili, but NEVER the other way around!

    • @marcsouciepiano7772
      @marcsouciepiano7772 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikekarren5010 The problem with your rant is that you're misinterpreting the meaning of my comment. You're going off on something I haven't said.
      I'm not saying the composer ripped off from Philip Glass, I'm saying it sounds like Philip Glass.

    • @kaedenparks9111
      @kaedenparks9111 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikekarren5010 you’re reading way too far into that comment, it’s good to make general music comparisons between composers. Music IS a language, and your allowed to compare any type of music to anything.

    • @mikekarren5010
      @mikekarren5010 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@marcsouciepiano7772 and I say you didn't read my comment. It's about semantics. Who was first? How can someone be like someone that has never been born yet? You would be correct to say..." in my opinion, Glass sounds like Boulanger." Sorry for the rant, oh wait, not really. SMILE That covers that part, but I still take issue with the comparison, as I explained above.

    • @mikekarren5010
      @mikekarren5010 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kaedenparks9111 Okay, I think I understand what you're saying, which tells me I'm still not understood, so, I'll try again. Would you compare a street rap "singer" to say, Mario Lanza? What would be the point? I agree, we have the right to compare, and I'll go one more, compare/contrast is a valuable learning tool. But, IMO there are limits. Glass IMO is not a great composer or teacher. The Boulanger sisters on the other hand shaped the classical music world of the 20th century. IMO there is no comparison. I know I go on too much, but I just must say one more thing. To me, Glass's music is a mind-numbing ordeal of boredom. How on earth he has ever achieved any success is a testament to the low-quality expectation of this generation. On the other hand, Boulanger speaks with genius, authority, and hard-earned understanding. Why would I waste my time with Glass when I could listen to Boulanger! My old piano teacher once said, "in the world of music, there is gold and there is garbage."
