  • Quaker Parrot Cage Aggression Training - Day 1
    Taming Your Quaker Parrot
    Today I am starting to do training with my Quaker Parrots on cage aggression. Most Quaker Parrots can be cage aggressive, but people may not realize they are only that way in or on their cage and they are things to do to get your birds off or out of the cage by their choice. This is Day 1 and I am doing some simple target training while they are being aggressive in an attempt to calm them down and get them to move from the cage.
    Our Pets:
    Birds:
    Spike - Moluccan Cockatoo
    Peter - Double Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot
    Chip - Quaker Parrot
    Pringle - Quaker Parrot
    Yoshi - Green Cheeked Conure
    Kiwi - Green Cheeked Conure
    Dogs:
    Ginny - Chorkie
    Gizzy - Chorkie
    Mini - Bichon Frise
    Cats:
    Baby
    Radley
    Luna
    Zarha

    We got ours at 3-4 weeks old for this exact reason. I was afraid I’d have to go through this so we ended up weaning ours.

      It can be such a long ride with a bird that is completely fearful of humans, don’t give up, you can do it! So often we accept that a bird is “how it is” and that ends up defining the relationship. Keep showing your birdie that you are there for them and over time they will trust. Good Luck 👍

    I have 30 years experience with Cockatiels. I have bred and hand raised hundreds. I've also hand trained 3 previously abused rescue birds. But..... I've had a rescue who was previously abused and after 3 years, I've made no progress. He will eat nothing but seed, no matter how many things I offer. He does not consider millet a treat. He doesnt consider any form of food to be a treat. He will sing to me from afar, but will not allow me anywhere near him. His cage aggression has gotten much worse over the 3 years I have owned him, even though he is in an extremely large cage for his size. His location is 6 feet from where I sit most of the day, and 4 feet from where I sleep. He will not only not let me pick him up with my hand, but will attack sticks or one of his own perches (he has 5 in his cage). Because of this, I can not start by stick training him. If I walk up near his cage, he will actually attack his own toys. I assume he was very badly abused, but I'm at a loss of how to get him to bond with me. He must be lonely and bored since he will not interact with anyone. Any advice would be appreciated since every video I see uses "treats" for training. I dont have that option since he likes nothing.

      leave the cage door open and let the bird come out on its own. i have quaker who has a whol;e flight room i cannot walk in without being attacked. i just open the door walk away and he flies out happy. when hes ready for bed he walk in and out the room screaming till i close the door. hes also learned sinks are drinks and will not sip out his containers lol only my drinks or the sink..and he jumps in the shower with me and sleeps on my feet lol loves the water. if you bond he still gonna attack all youre friends and family so be warned. they boned with one person. quakers will also bite you from jealousy so be ready.

    yeah mine runs down at me and tries to bite me. so this might help me. yeah once he is away from the cage he is fine, but he never wants to come out on his own.... or he hides in his house and puts a bunch of food in his house. good to know that if i can get him to come out for corn... which might be harder because corn...kernals are something he covets and will also become aggressive towards hoarding corn, cause once he has it uhm yeah no one can touch it. its his now. i'd try apple slices but he will just take them from the bowl and run away.... i am going to share this with my dad because he should know about it.

    So cute! Extremely stubborn those quakers but I know once they calm down they are so sweet. We have one, his mate died about a month ago and I've bonded with him, I just have not tried to take him out of the cage yet. He tries to bite everyone but me but that's only because I've built a bond with him.

    • @OhioPets
      @OhioPets  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be patient and give him space. Don’t give attention to him when he bites or tries to bite. It is a normal part of a baby bird growing up. Start target training to help establish a language between you two that is clear and effective. There are scores of beginner videos on positive reinforcement. @birdtricks is a great free resource for basic stick training videos. (They also have paid courses too) Good luck!

      Ours bite too! They only rarely let us touch them and they prefer each others physical affection over anyone else. We still have lots of fun with them and they are free flight trained. We just have to interact with them on their terms.

    I liked your video, I have two quackers. They don't talk yet, but I'm hoping they will start soon. They are also very aggressive and I wish I could tame them.

    • @OhioPets
      @OhioPets  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is exactly what quakers are like :) Ours took a while to talk and they were both around a year old when we got them. Obviously some birds never talk (our Rose Breasted Cockatoo has never even tried to talk) but I think quakers have a better chance than most. Good luck!
