It's not so much if a new character isn't very attractive, but to change an already established characters appearance, Aloy and MJ for example is what really takes the piss.
when they cant make the character ugly they force you to play in loose costume and a mask like in shadow of the tomb raider, half the game your running round in a tent for a dress and a mask on.
So for a good while, I would had a dislike for ugly lead characters in more recent videogames because I saw it as a push for uglification of pretty looking female characters. However, then I remembered that when it comes to player customizable characters, players sometimes do tend to make ugly characters on purpose and then play as said ugly character. Which then takes the wind out of the sail of my argument for why uglification is bad. If anything, players don't like ugly lead characters when they don't have the option to make them ugly themselves, or they don't like it when a previously good looking character from one game is made to look bad in a follow-up game.
When you make an ugly character is it ugly or is it over the top hilariously ugly? I've done the latter, especially when playing multiplayer with buddies just for the laughs, but we all usually look like a freak show.
I'm fine with having less attractive characters in some games, but its the reasoning behind why they are making them less attractive that is problematic
Haha i honestly didn’t think the star wars girl was that bad looking. Just the whole game around her wasn’t good. But i feel thats the issue now with gaming. One side pushed to hard and the other started trying to push back even harder. Now we just got two extremes picking at every detail on the other and desperately trying to win a pissing match. I just hope before i die, we can go back to simpler times when we could enjoy a game for being fun and no one felt it needed to be political
That's a nice thought. I've always said that escalation is inevitable and force is always met with an equal amount of, if not more force, in return. So here we are. Fighting over pixels. We live in interesting times.
They did not reject Panam in Cyberpunk even tho she is very plain indeed. They did not reject Alyx Vance in Half Life 2 even tho she looked like a bloke lol. They did not reject Ciri in W3 even tho she looked like skinny trans in that game. Still, nice try.
A game absolutely not on anyone's radar: My Horse Bonded Spirits AKA Abby Rides a Horse ... character models matter! th-cam.com/video/dRAKtMUE-NU/w-d-xo.html
Look, Kay isn't ugly. He is a perfectly decent looking lead character.
I see what you did there!
I am an ugly guy in real life. When escape to an rpg I don't want to be ugly there too.
Haha! Same!

What they did to both of those girls was horrible.

That they do, or they shave off your curves and square up your figure.
