Yeah, I'm honestly surprised Derek and the others did not watch the PSA along with the rest of the episodes.
While the creator of this masterpiece did not go on to create Beaststars, they were an integral inspiration in the creation of Mike and Melissa, which is a much better legacy to have imo.

i think it would have been funny if once raku-chan was diagnosed with rabies, the art got like really good and the series got really fucking dark where her friends are mourning her before she dies, and the next episode was the funeral for raku-chan. the rest of the episode was her friends mourning together and shit. then the rest of the series is raku-chan's friends trying to come to terms with her death. then the finale is hitoshi-chan accepting raku's death, but koneko-chan still can't get over it, and the final shot is koneko solemnly gazing at a chair and noose in the foreground, slightly blurred.

Y’know I think the thing I love/hate the most about this is that I can actually imagine this being like a whole professional production, like give the basic plot line of a girl slowly dying of a terminal illness, unaware of how bad her condition really is, enjoying her last days/weeks of life while her friends have to support her and pretend everything will be alright despite knowing how it has to end? Honest to god I think it has some huge potential

High Guardian Spice thinks it's better than it actually is. It thinks it's some revolutionary and mature story, but doesnt live up to that.
Nyan Neko Sugar Girls doesn't pretend to be anything else. It was made from a place of passion (either as a parody or unironically) and is just a simple story about neko girls and their mutual guy friend.

There's genuinely a lot of thought and work put into the series. It's probably satire, which almost makes it more impressive imo? Like somebody consciously sat down and wrote, drew, and voice acted all of this for shits and giggles. Nyan Neko Sugar Girls is a perfect parody of mid 2000s shoujo anime and manga. 10/10 definitely one of the greats

I did find some of the original concept art (some of which is included in the intro) and it actually doesn't look so bad (at least compared to the final product lmao). Plus there was a LOT of concept art suggesting it might've been genuine at some point in its creation.
At first I wasn't sure but then I found out theres a COVID 19 PSA on their channel with the exact same art style, actors, and mic quality.
There is no way at all this is genuine because then the art at least would be improved after so many years. This definitely is one of the greatest forms of satire media out there.
I would love to add some hilarious context as a Veterinary Assistant: the only way to diagnose rabies is to kill the animal, and do a DFA test. The reason you must kill the animal is because you need to decapitate the animal since you need access to the brain to perform the test. So I wish they would of just ended the series with Raku-Chan getting euthanized in that moment💀

Honestly I think you can see the improvement in actual animation. The smear frames on Hitoshi-san, the fireworks (I genuinely liked those okay I thought they were pretty alright), the death of Raku-chan. Regardless of whether it started out as serious and later devolved into a joke, or if it started out purely as a joke, a lot of love went into this. So, at the end of the day, maybe Nyan Neko Sugar Girls is about creating something amazing with your friends ❤

Many fans think that the creator voiced all of the characters (besides a few of the extras in the last episode), just changing the pitch and mic quality for some of them to make it seem like there were multiple VAs.

I think they always had a pretty good understanding of a lot of aspects of the anime art style, but they clearly drew everything with a mouse on mspaint or something and they weren’t trying too hard in the first place, so the skill only shined through in certain moments

The best part about this series is, despite everything that is objectively wrong with it, it is still charming all the way through...well, almost all the way. (I cannot rewatch that 1 minute scream from Episode 3) And surprisingly, in a strange and beautiful way, it ended on a high note. Not Raku dying, of course, but the far more impressive animation displayed during her dying moment. This anime changed my life, indeed, and got to me appreciate the art of stylistic suck.

If any are interested, there is a fan made season two called Nyan~ Neko Sugar Girls: Mayonaka. It does an incredible recreation of the series art style. Even the direction that the new voice talent takes stays faithful to the original series. Even while staying true to original, the new studio isn’t afraid to add an element of fast paced action fight scenes and even new characters! It is still ongoing so I hope that more people will support this fan project inspired by such an impactful anime.

I just imagine in the rabies episode, but Raku-Chan just slowly turns around just to have a realistic rotting face, the mouth slowly opening and closing slowly with a smooth animation, like a 3D character in a 2D world. The skin is a brownish green, the eye balls are shrunken, and the mouth is widened across the face in a snarling position. Then they just carry the zombie like Raku-Chan around like a huge humanoid ragdoll as she slowly breaths in and out still with that realistic face.
Do people seriously think it isn’t satire? There’s a lot of jokes in there that are very aware that basically tells you it is. For example, when the Nurse is speaking with a normal mic for 2 seconds, and they couldn’t understand her, and when she goes back to the awful mic they understand her again. Plus, they still consistently post every couple of years.
Dan, you do not understand how much this show means to me. I literally starting jumping up and down seeing this series get recognized again. This show is my life. It is my blood. I breath nnsg. Thank you. :)

came back to this video after meeting some people at sacanime who were cosplaying raku-chan, koneko-chan and hitoshi-san. the fact that people cosplay these characters after so long says so much about how pervasive this series is, and i love it.
