This is a really well thought out, concise breakdown. Thank you for this!
ND should have Howard Cross back at DT. That's a big deal. Cross and Mills in the middle are a tough combo and will push the pocket back into the IU QBs face. That keeps the QB from stepping up which helps the edge guys get to the QB.
ND fan here. ND DL is good in the middle, well below average on the ends. The LB'ers are well above average. If you're judging by stats, there are 5 of them who constantly rotate throughout each series. The secondary is well documented. How they've stayed so dominant without Ben Morrison is crazy, but his absence was notable against USC. The D didn't play well that game,. Every other game, yes. Still had 2 pick-sixes in an underperforming game. Golden runs a pressure oriented (through the LBers) and complex scheme. If they had better DE's, they'd be really scary. Keep in mind as well regarding stats, once the 3rd string and walkons played many of the 4th quarters, that's when the other team's stats started to come alive.

Great video! Much different tune than upon hearing the matchup a few days ago. I don’t blame you. The networks poison the viewers on NDs capabilities and it takes one to watch the games to see NDs sheer talent. I feel their depth is the wildcard that will pay dividends in the 4th if it’s still close to offset IUs speed.
Good objective breakdown. I would add a few points: 1. The QB Power run has mostly been figured out and nullified lately. Riley is still a dangerous runner to break one off, but lately the running is more focused on Love & Price. 2. WR #6 (Faison) is their shifty/ twitchy guy. ND likes the WR screens to him and he's capable to break off a long play. I like how these two teams compare. I think it comes down to 2 things: can ND run effectively and how do ND CB cover against the IU receivers.
Good stuff man. Not sure the ND d line is average. The 2 starting tackles are well above average. If they play average we lose. If they play to potential it’ll be a long day for your boys.
I’ve also heard Al Golden say multiple times he’s not concerned about having a number 1 run defense. His philosophy seems to be more about shutting down the pass game. If teams get some yards on the ground, so be it. As long as the result is a W.
Sounds like me. My dad taught at ND for 58 years, but I went to IUSB for the music program. I'm a fan of both teams, delighted that IU has done so well this year, but I've been a ND fan since I was born.
@BeersBytheIvy I just thought of this. I wonder what the field condition will be like? Does ND have a heating system under their turf like Green Bay? I guess we will find out.
I love ND more than can be described. I haven’t missed a DOWN of ND football in 25 years. We CANNOT throw the ball….at all. All they have to do is force us to throw and we’re toast. Angelli will be in the game after halftime.
great stuff but i think ND’s defense is top 5 and their line is the best…the cornerbacks are the best in the nation even without morrison…good coverage
I agree what youve said about ND's offense, but I think youre missing the boat big time with the D, especially with the LBs. ND has one of the top LB groups in the nation imo.
The Irish have 2 All American caliber DTs. Cross was AA last year, he's struggled with injuries much of the year. Mills was AA honorable mention this year. Their D line struggles come from losing 2 VERY good ends to inury. By far their best pass rushers. The replacements are good in the run game, not as twitchy pass rushers.
@BeersBytheIvy The defense (and team) has been decimated by injuries to be honest. Bothelo (12) started very strong at end. Redshirt senior looked like he was going to play himself into a mid round pick. Blew his knee out after 3 games. Out for the season. His replacement Traore (5). RS soph, was VERY twitchy and quick off the edge. Really looked like he was becoming a superstar before blowing his knee out. 3 sacks in 4.5 games, with only 2 of those being starts after Bothelo, I believe. 30 Bryant is a true freshman. He's 1 year away from being a PROBLEM, but he flashes. 40 Burnham is very good against the run, very average pass rusher. 44 Tuihalamaka is good overall, just inexperienced. 9 Oben is a transfer from Duke. He's been disappointing. 14 sacks in 3 years at Duke, 0 so far as a SR. Has really come on against the run in the second half of the year. Last year, all-American CB Morrison has been out after hip surgery midway through the year. Projected 1st rounder. Jayden Mickey was battling for the #2 corner spot in pre-season. He lost out to Grey. He played the first 4 games before being beaten out by Moore (15) for the 3rd corner. He decided to quit the team to preserve a reddhirt and transfer. At one point they were down to 3 healthy scholarship corner backs. Cross, pre-season all-American, has missed the last 3 games with an ankle issue. He has been dealing with injuries on and off all year. He's back for Indiana. Undersized but has a very quick first step and high motor. Outstanding freshman Kingston Viliamu-Asa (27) has been out since army with a sprained knee. Not expected to play vs Indiana. They typically play 5 backers. -24 kizer is a 6th year guy. Most games played in Irish history. -34 Bowen was Indiana Gatorade player of the year. -3 Sneed is as twitchy as you'll find at outside backer. Very good pass rushers, undersized and inconsistent. -4 Ausberry, maybe the fastest at backer. -27 KVA, will be early round pick in 3 years. Very athletic as a 240lb freshman. Good on the edge, hits HARD. Their entire LB corp is very fast and flies to the ball. On the offensive side of the ball, it hasn't been much better. TE Evans was recovering from ACL last year and really didn't hit 100% until midpoint of the year. Starting LT tore his peck in training camp, true freshman won out job to replace him. They lost starting center for season. Then RG for a few weeks, then his backup for the season. To be perfectly honest, Freeman has done a he'll of a job dealing with injuries and the embarrassing loss to NIU.
@BeersBytheIvy Traore tore his acl at home, and Morrison hurt his hip at home. Bothello and 2 offensive linemen went down at Purdue. Jagusah tore his peck in the off-season. KVA sprained his knee vs. Army at Yankee Stadium. Cross came into the season with a hamstring issue and tried playing through it. That could have been a root cause for his ankle. It's tough to say. I'd like to see more grass generally as well, though I don't know how much it played into the injuries this year. There were definitely questions about the new strength and conditioning coach. However, I think it was mostly just bad luck. With Morrison, Bothello, and Traore, this defense would be nearing "all time" conversations because it solves their two biggest issues: pass rush of edge and depth at CB. Without them, it is still a very good and very young team. Watts, Cross, Mills, Kiser amd Morrison (though there is a hope he may come back if injury hurt his draft stock too much) are the impact players going to NFL after this year. I think they routinely play 8-9 freshman/sophmore eligible guys on D. Offense loses Leonard, Evans, 2 Oline starters (not starters at the beginning of year), and 4 WRs that play. Depending how QB develops, this team could be better next year. TE, RB. O Line all return a ton of tallent. WR plays 2 talented underclassmen with a few highly ranked young guys in waiting. Could use a big time WR, pass rusher, kicker/punter and DT in the portal.

Good breakdown. If ND brings it's A game it'll be over by halftime. If not IU could win and even win big. This ND team is brutal. I hope IU ends the game without too many injuries. I have lots of iu connections and wish them all well. But come gametime, Go Irish! 🍀 I can't wait...
It will be over by halftime? Again, sleeping on a super dangerous team. We’re the “underdog” with nothing to lose, all to gain

@Hoosiers12345 I didn't say it will be. I said IF we bring our A game it will be. You are dangerous if we don't come ready and hyped. If that happens, as i said, iu could win big. I think that's fair. Honestly though, if we are at our best, there are few teams that can beat us. on a bad day, niu can. that's where we are at. 🍀
Regardless who is playing, these playoff games should be at neutral sites with equal opportunities for schools to secure tickets for their fan base. Lucas Oil Stadium should be the venue for the IU - ND game. The seeding should be enough of an advantage. Not home field with 95% of the seats filled by the home team fans. Same goes for the Ohio State - Tennessee game and every other game during the playoffs.
@ If they won’t do neutral sites, both schools should at least have equal access to tickets. Give home team 20k, visiting team 20k and release the rest to the public through some NCAA program like they do for the basketball tournament.
@ I love Bo NIX. Injuries happen all the time and Riley would be a decent back up to run RPO’s and certain goal line situations. I definitely like him better as a back up than Jarrett Stidham. He’s like a big goofy piñata back there 😆

In general; very good analysis. However, I disagree about ND's defensive line; at least the interior. Cross and Mills are probably day 2 NFL prospects that can generate pressure right up the middle
I’m not throwing hate. I just didn’t see a lot of early game D line play. More large lead everyone know they are passing. That’s where I see any production. Maybe that’s every team lol
@ oh yeah I don’t think your hating. I really appreciate you covering this game. If we didn’t have injury’s to both our d ends. I would’ve said something else but our weakest point on our defense is our d ends. Our interior is good in my opinion.
@@douglascarlson9006 USC scored 14 in garbage time essentially. ND had a 14 point lead entering the 4th and a 21-point lead late in the same Q. Besides, USC probably has the best WR corps in the nation and a very good distributor of the ball at QB playing against a banged-up Irish defense(no best DL in Cross, no best cb in BMo and an injured Christian Gray making the start and getting picked on throughout the contest). USC likely beats IU and definitely scores early and often.

Well what you just said about ND D bolds well for IUs offensive strengths. Also, IUs defense is second in the nation in run Defense. Held OSU to its lowest total offense and don’t say it’s because of S.O.S. ND S.O.S. Is just as weak.Do they rank in the top 5 in any stat if not that’s bad. IUs defensive front is quick and nimble…so the fact you said ND O is powerful but not as quick… I’m feeling pretty good as an IU fan. You should have broken down IU as well you might have a closer contest.
@@chuckcribbs3398 The highest ranked Run Offense IU faced was OSU at #59. The average Run Offense for the IU schedule is 98. The highest ranked Run Defense DN faced was Army at #10 and they destroyed them. IU has no chance to stop ND running.
The ND commenters have made many great points. One thing not brought up is that even if you think Cignetti is a better head coach than Freeman, ND has elite coaches on both sides of the ball, and pretty much all the way down. Just at OC and DC, Mike Denbrock and Al Golden vs. Mike Shanahan and Bryant Haines... it's not even close. ND has made the better adjustment all season except for in week 2. Great breakdown, keep up the good work!
@@BeersBytheIvy Yes, what you saw was true. Both things can be true at the same time. ND's linebackers are "some of the best in the country". The secondary is dramatically better. This is because they're The best secondary in the country. Albeit not as good without Morrison. The line is the weakness, they are average or young. Overall good analysis I think. Cross being back could make a difference though. To answer the question you've asked several times, yes, he's missed the past few games and battled injuries all year. If he's healthy, it' could be a VERY long day for IU. He'll be a problem if he's 100%. All speculation until Friday though eh :) No matter what happens it's going to be an epic occasion
@@BeersBytheIvy I'm just saying you're making it sound like it's a potential weakness instead of the strongest secondary in the country. Sure they can get beat, just like anyone can, but it's not like it's a weakness to exploit.
Good stuff there besides the line. The D-line is not elite, but it is very good as a unit. ND has the best DT tantrums in the country. As a unit, ND DTs lead the nation in sacks (19). The USC game was a bad day on defense, especially without Cross. They double-team Mills all day, plus USC had an athletic QB who was able to scramble and avoid sure sacks. IU does not have a QB like that, and Cross will be back. IU Oline isn't that good. Advantage: ND Dline.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The IU online plays tough. They couldn’t pick up a blitz against Osu. We will see if they clean this up
I sense ND against this Coach Cig coached team is too limited on what they do on O - ie, it seems 80% of ND's O rests on 2 guys who are very good but can be spied on and targeted. The reverse is not true as IU's O has far more weapons they have willingly deployed, every play, goal line or mid field, therefore, are far harder to target or stop. Protection of IU's Rourke and his quick read of the D will be essential - wh means IU's O line must maintain their blocks longer than they did against MI and OH State! Coach Cig beats a good, young coach. On a dry field, prep and execution over athletic talent wins this one. IU by 2 TDs, maybe more. Their defeat at OH State was deceiving and causes too many, too easily to restore their long held bias that IU will falter and fail, again.
Yeah they are good team. I grew up in Indiana. Some my best friends are notre dame friend. Always got hear how good they are every preseason… it’s not a real hate. It’s a sports hate.
He really did undersell the LB's and even with the praise for the secondary I think he undersold it. But the DL criticism I accept, especially if he only watched the USC game where Cross was out.
You do know that conference schedules are made 3-4 years in advance? When the 4 west coast teams were added, they rotated them in on the other 14 teams’ schedule. Amazes me how many people talk about scheduling like it is made up during fall camp each year. It’s not how this works people!
Lifelong ND fan & Hoosiers fan. This will be fun! ND D against IU offense. I am curious If IU can run the ball? I am curious If ND can stop IU rush D? Anyway the pigskin falls, I WIN!!!
One thing I’d like to point out to you. There are two losses total for both teams. Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois at home. Indiana lost to Ohio State, the number two ranked team in the country at Columbus. There are a lot of other reasons why Notre Dame will get beat, like Indiana is the number one defense in the country against the rush, and ND will probably lose by double digits. But that’s a tidbit that you should mull over before you go talking out of your ass.
Notre Dame will probably lose by double digits? I think that's what you said.......Hard to understand since you are talking out of your ass! Probability has to be demonstrated. What is your evidence Notre Dame will lose by double digits.
IU has played one ranked team and got their ass handed to them. ND has beaten 4 ranked teams and los to NIU by a field goal after a major win the week prior. IU hasn't played anyone to have a major win against. Against teams with 8 wins, IU won by 23, ND by 27. Against teams above .500, the point differential was 9 for IU and 19 for ND. The best rush team IU faced was OSU at #59. The rest average Rush Offense was #98 IU faced. ND wins easily 42-17.
@ how many of those “ranked teams” were ranked in the last poll? You haven’t played a team that’s as remotely good as Indiana. Even Vegas only makes you a TD favorite, at home! We will stop your running game and force you to throw, which is not what you want to do. Indiana will win by 2 scores. Piece of cake. Cupcake that is.

Beers Man. Really? Indiana has at least one head to head vs Purdue and IU scored 66 -0. ND scoree 66-7. IU also played better vs similar teams who played NIU which ND lost to. Literally the major thing ND has going for it is home field advantage and a mobile QB, which IU doesnt have, because Rourkes not risking an ACL tear again.
ND put in the second and third string at Half time against Purdue. The 7 points were in garbage time. IU kept their starters ion to run the score up. You're comparing your starters to ND's backups. IU's point differential on teams above .500 is 9 pts, ND's is 19. ND wins 35-17 easily.
Everybody talks like ND is relevant but your best win is Texas a&m I mean come ga will show Notre dame how the elite talent will be seen in New Orleans
Everyone says ND is irrelevant but in the last 5 years, teams point at wins over ND as one of their crowning wins of the year. Most ND fans don’t just walk around assuming we’re gonna win Nattys. So it’s really just all projection and some weird fascination with ND being independent. If it’s so great being independent - why doesn’t anyone else do it?

Absolutely zero reason to hate Notre Dame lol the last time both teams played each other you were likely chillin the sack.. and before that was like 1958.. if either fanbase dislikes each other outside of this one matchup you might need to focus on other things in life bc neither team affects the other in their successes..😂

Indiana has the number 1 rushing defense in the country allowing 70.8 yds per game. Against B1G teams only (Power Four) it balloons all the way up to 72 yards per game. The most they allowed in any game was 116. Over their last four games (Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue) the Hoosiers allowed a total of 161 yards on the ground, 40.25 yards per game. The last four power 4 opponents the Irish have faced finished the season ranked as follows against the run. Ga Tech 30th, USC 54th, Virginia, 60th, Fla State 109th. Not exactly the Steel Curtain. Texas A&M finished ranked 48th, Louisville 43rd, and Stanford 39th, and Purdue 120th. Most of the rushing yards for the Irish this season came against bad defensive teams. N. Illinois was the best run defense Notre Dame faced this season. We all know how that turned out.
Highest ranked Rushing Offense was OSU at #59. The rest averaged #98. IU did not play anyone above #59 in rushing. ND faced the #10 Rush Defense in the country with Army and you saw how that went. I wonder why you left the Army Defense out of your answer.....
Yeah, ND faced 4 in the top 50. Depending on which site IU faced 2 in top 100 OSU 53 and Charlotte 98. I love the fact that IU played 3 teams w/ a winning record 1 w/7 wins and 2 w/ 6 wins. Amazing how that works
@@BeersBytheIvy Dang this tough I want both to do good wish they didn’t have to match up , I guess notre dame by 3 but i wouldn’t be shocked if IU beats them
Elitist are always fun to beat. If Indiana wins it will crush Notre Dame fans. I bet it will be worse than the Nebraska fans. They had a complete meltdown after that loss. ( Give them credit they have passion) Either way plenty of people can afford the ticket prices, There will be plenty of Indiana fans in the seats. Remember, it is the Irish fans that are selling the tickets. Maybe they need the money, but Indiana has very few tickets to sell. If you see a ticket up for grabs remember it means a Notre Dame fan is selling it.
Why would he HATE Notre Dame? What's to hate? I can understand why he would envy Notre Dame since he's from the University of Indiana. (By the way, why isn't UI located in Indianapolis?)
Sure. Just like you gave up 35 points against USC? Like you lost to NIU? IU has a veteran coach. That will count for more than you think. And ND will not be able to run against IU as they have the #1 run defense, #2 overall. IU 35, ND 10.
14 points were in garbage time with backups in against USC. GO research the actual stats and who IU has played and where those teams are ranked. You will find that is a garbage stat. But believe that going into the game. ND averages 227 rushing yards a game. IU isn't built to stop that. IU passing is going against the #3 pass defense, OSU is ranked #2 and they held IU to 68 yards passing. 68 yards.... hahahaha
Actually, the “suspect punting” (which I agree with) was in the Michigan and certainly in the OSU game. The other ten games, the punting was quite good.

I suspect playing two service academies inflates that number. They both went over 200 on the ground, but were held way under their average.
I’ve also heard Al Golden say multiple times he’s not concerned about having a number 1 run defense. His philosophy seems to be more about shutting down the pass game. If teams get some yards on the ground, so be it. As long as the result is a W.
nicely done by an iu fan with a non biased opinion of what he sees. love to drink a beer with him
Absolutely! That would be awesome
Split household here. Grads from both schools and current IU students and I work at ND. LOL I'm so happy for this match up.
You work at notre dame. That’s awesome!
Sounds like me. My dad taught at ND for 58 years, but I went to IUSB for the music program. I'm a fan of both teams, delighted that IU has done so well this year, but I've been a ND fan since I was born.
So win win?
Excellent analysis! I just subscribed. Do you think the weather affects the passing game for both teams? It is supposed to be in the 20s
Thank you! This is a great comment. Didn’t even think about the weather. I gotta think more about this. Usually this help the bigger team which is ND
@BeersBytheIvy I just thought of this. I wonder what the field condition will be like? Does ND have a heating system under their turf like Green Bay? I guess we will find out.
I got no idea on this. I doubt it regarding the heated turf. It’s going to be cold for sure. Like 20 degrees cold.

great stuff but i think ND’s defense is top 5 and their line is the best…the cornerbacks are the best in the nation even without morrison…good coverage
Yeah what’s saying holds up on tape. I think there D line a bit worse but from what I learned via comment had some injuries
Very nice analysis. Thanks.
Hey man thank you! Appreciate giving the video a shot
I agree what youve said about ND's offense, but I think youre missing the boat big time with the D, especially with the LBs. ND has one of the top LB groups in the nation imo.
Kisser isn’t even in the top 200 of TOT on the year
And that’s what I saw on tape
@@BeersBytheIvy thats a myopic view on LB play
Then educate me Bec I’ve gotten 5 of these and nobody can give me a stat
The Irish have 2 All American caliber DTs. Cross was AA last year, he's struggled with injuries much of the year. Mills was AA honorable mention this year.
Their D line struggles come from losing 2 VERY good ends to inury. By far their best pass rushers. The replacements are good in the run game, not as twitchy pass rushers.
See that’s what I saw lack of twitch. All power. So is everyone back for this playoff game?
This is a very well thought out comment. Finally somebody tell me about the linebackers with details.
Honestly you guys need grass again. All theses injuries
Hey thanks for checking out the video
It will be over by halftime? Again, sleeping on a super dangerous team. We’re the “underdog” with nothing to lose, all to gain
@Hoosiers12345 I didn't say it will be. I said IF we bring our A game it will be. You are dangerous if we don't come ready and hyped. If that happens, as i said, iu could win big. I think that's fair. Honestly though, if we are at our best, there are few teams that can beat us. on a bad day, niu can. that's where we are at. 🍀
Yeah man is ganna be a great game!

NDs DL (even missing starters Bothelo & Traore) is not average. With Howard Cross returning from injury, IU will learn this next Friday.
IU 35 - ND 14. Take it to the bank (or your bookie),
Love this. 300 comment ain’t nobody taking IU
No way the neutral sites. I like the home games. What is Total bs is that ND didn’t even let tickets go to the public
@ If they won’t do neutral sites, both schools should at least have equal access to tickets. Give home team 20k, visiting team 20k and release the rest to the public through some NCAA program like they do for the basketball tournament.
Oh for sure. I don’t think IU even got tickets
The Denver Broncos need to draft Riley Leonard in the sixth round and use him on the goal line and as a good backup.
I didn’t not expect this comment. I like Bo
Did these guys both play all season? Were one of them out? What am I missing
@@BeersBytheIvy Cross has missed the last few games.
Our interior dline leads the nation in sacks at 19… ☘️
I’m not throwing hate.
@@BeersBytheIvy Oh really?
ND just gave up 35 pts to USC! ...
How do you explain that? ... oh, but let me rephrase: what's your lame excuse?
@@douglascarlson9006 USC scored 14 in garbage time essentially. ND had a 14 point lead entering the 4th and a 21-point lead late in the same Q. Besides, USC probably has the best WR corps in the nation and a very good distributor of the ball at QB playing against a banged-up Irish defense(no best DL in Cross, no best cb in BMo and an injured Christian Gray making the start and getting picked on throughout the contest). USC likely beats IU and definitely scores early and often.

Hey thanks checking out the video. Noted thank you!
IU is #2 total defense, #1 against the run.
Appreciate the comment. Really good one. I just couldn’t make a 25 min video. I plan to make the IU version next week
Power vs speed. Who going to win?

Fear the offense that played a weaker schedule and scored less points!!
Very good assessment except for the Linebackers. Nds are some of the best in the country
See other folks are saying that. I just felt the secondary was dramatically better then the linebackers
"Their seconday can get beat" - casually said about the number 1 EPA per play pass defense.
Indiana receivers are quick. ND plays press. Look for Indiana receivers to find a way to get separation. That’s what I’m saying
@@BeersBytheIvy I'm just saying you're making it sound like it's a potential weakness instead of the strongest secondary in the country. Sure they can get beat, just like anyone can, but it's not like it's a weakness to exploit.
Ok you got my attention. Die hard IRISH fan here.
Thanks for checking out the video!
We will see if they clean this up
Great job on this
Thanks! And good work on your channel as well
I sense ND against this Coach Cig coached team is too limited on what they do on O - ie, it seems 80% of ND's O rests on 2 guys who are very good but can be spied on and targeted.
Dude they aren’t bad at stopping the run, they played 2 service academies who ran almost every single play, it’s going to skew the numbers.
Okay this is a valid comment

Yeah they are good team. I grew up in Indiana. Some my best friends are notre dame friend. Always got hear how good they are every preseason… it’s not a real hate. It’s a sports hate.
Why does have IU playing with only 10 defenders?
Because ND couldn’t handle 11
You might want to go watch some more of the lbs and our interior lineman, and to think they've lost three of their DEs
He really did undersell the LB's and even with the praise for the secondary I think he undersold it. But the DL criticism I accept, especially if he only watched the USC game where Cross was out.
I watch NI Texas a&m Louisville usc… what am I missing with these line backer. Run defense is what 50th. The DB made all the plays in the pass game
Very interesting commentary though I think you're wrong about ND's DL and LB.
Thanks! And thanks for commenting. Do ya think there best group is the DBs though?
@BeersBytheIvy 100% DB's are elite and arguably the best secondary in all CFB.
Yeah I noticed right away. Who the heck are these guys. Not known for CBs
@@BeersBytheIvy Very true, ND has had a sub par secondary for most of last 15 years. But Freeman and Mickens have fixed a lot last 3 years.

Hey Cal, I think so. Giving ND the edge right now. Gotta rewatch some IU offense tho

Good comment here guys. Worth a read
Highest ranked Rushing Offense was OSU at #59. The rest averaged #98. IU did not play anyone above #59 in rushing. ND faced the #10 Rush Defense in the country with Army and you saw how that went. I wonder why you left the Army Defense out of your answer.....
ND has rushed for 200+ yds 5 games in a row. Should be a good matchup.
