Just watched this after walking the gorge with my husband and daughter. We walked up the gorge from the lion rock tea room side. Quite a steep hike up but well worth it for the views. Once we had completed that side, we walked down and crossed over the road. We didn’t go up the black rock gate, we just went up a steep slope directly opposite where the path ends on the other side. We then walked back along the other side of the gorge and saw the incredible views of Cheddar reservoir, the Bristol Channel and Wales. This took us to the lookout tower, and then the walk down jacobs ladder. Beautiful walk, we paid for parking which was £6 for the whole day. I highly recommend walking both sides of the gorge if you can, it’s a fantastic, challenging walk.
I remember Cheddar Gorge from my childhood growing up in England, it was like a fairy tale village back then, nice to see it again, though it is busy and more populated now unlike then.
The stick-of-rock and sweet factory.. I would say the opposite, its dead now, the caves literally covered in "dave was here 2k9" scratched into the walls, most shops/cafes were closed or only open 10-2.. sad
I did this 1 week ago as a Londoner. Best starting point is at Jacobs Ladder steps, hike upwards across mountain face then back down to meet black rock. Its a tough steep climb, moutain goats are plentiful, goat droppings everywhere as well as bees/wasps...great views across the Somerset countryside
Hi, thanks for watching the video! From what I understood climbing the Jacobs Ladder is for ticket holders only, but descending it it's free, that's why most people do the hike the other way. But I think now with the pandemic there's no tickets so you're probably able to do that without paying, right? Cheddar Gorge is beautiful!
Before moving to France, I spent many years in Cheddar Gorge, and I still bring members of my french family to profit from the caves, the best being Gough's cave! (OK, Wookey Hole is better, but its a little further away!) Well worth the visit, ALL the motorbike gangs go there for FUN, hardly ever do they cause trouble, and there are many, many classical bikes to be seen in summer! Not too far away is Burrington Coombe, where the 'Rock of Ages' is situated, not as imposing as Cheddar, but worth visit.
It's such an amazing area, isn't it? I am surprised so little know about it! During the car meeting we saw lots of motorbikes too and it was quite lovely. Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment, I hope you can continue to enjoy the area when you visit us in the UK!
Went there couple of times , most funny are goats , I actually did tried to climb till like half way up and then went all the way down mostly on my bum 😂 overall I just regret after your video that I've never did a trail 😂 mostly did a drive across the pass but everytime I see it I love it . I've came out here after buying a shower gel from goat milk and decided to get back into past when I was so exicted about travelling across UK . Cheddar Gorge is actually the birth place of Cheddar cheese. It's caves have the perfect conditions for the bacteria to mature the cheese to perfection because of the constant temperature within the caves. These caves are still used to mature cheddar cheese today

Hi there, so sorry for the late reply! I somehow missed the notification for this comment! So from a quick research online it doesn't seem like there is an easy way to reach Cheddar Gorge by public transportation. You can either take a train to Bristol and from there a taxi to the Gorge (and spend a quite decent amount just on that 30min journey) or take the train to Bristol, then another one to Weston-Super-Mare. Once you get to Weston-Super-Mare, you will need to get the bus 126 for a 1h long ride until you get to the village of Cheddar. This last option was found on a website that could be outdated (specially after all of the restrictions and changes in public transportation) so I am not entirely sure this is still applicable, specially when Google Maps doesn't show any available way to commute from London to the Gorge by public transportation so I would say the answer to this is probably no 😐
The view that you have from the walk we did is as shown in the video. You do see a good portion of it at the very top but I actually don't know how far they stretch out!

Unfortunately there's a lot of misinformation out there and I ended up not double checking it, and further spreading that misinformation. I looked it up again and the only thing I can find is being the largest gorge in the country, but that's it. As for what's the highest inland cliff in the country, I couldn't quite find where it is but yes, it is very possible that it would be there.
Good video but I’m sorry to say that the north of England is really mountainous and hilly unlike the south of England. It is quite ignorant to say it is the highest inland cliff in England the highest mountain in England is Scarfill pike in the Lake District and it is a mountain. It is way higher than this and it is in England. You should probably check out the north of England at some point like Yorkshire the Pennines, the Lake District. I think you would be supported how many mountains and hills there are in the North of England. Not like the south of England which is mainly flat
I replied to your other comment but to further explain it, I am quite aware of what the country has to offer actually. Lake District has been on my list for a while and just haven't been yet because I would rather take a long holiday to visit it than just a couple of days :) however I didn't know the hight of the mountains on lets say Lake District to compare them to Cheddar Gorge, and I stupidly didn't check the information that I got while researching Cheddar Gorge. So you're totally right, I made a mistake and I apologize for that. Not that I didn't know that England has mountains, but mostly because I didn't know their height and I didn't double check what I read online 😅 Appreciate the feedback and definitely gotta be more careful with what I read.
Have you actually visited the south of England? Most of southern England is not mainly flat; I think you're getting confused with East Anglia. There are pockets of flat land such as the Somerset levels but most of southern England from Kent to Cornwall is hilly, in fact some of the hills on Dartmoor could almost be classed as mountains. True they're not as high as many hills in northern England but that doesn't mean the landscape is flat. Incidently there are also large areas of northern England such as east Yorkshire and east Lancashire which are also flat.
ahaha so there is parking by Jacob's ladder (not sure if that one is paid but I would assume it is). If you're going to start the hike there then it would be easier to park there (you also have toilets there and the dog bakery I showed in the video). But as you drive along the gorge you will find loads of parking areas in the actual gorge - we ended up parking on the side of the road because as I mentioned in the video, we started the hike halfway instead.
IDK why they had to build a road running through it and ruin such beautiful scenery. Imagine how great it would be to be able to just walk through the gorge without any irritating traffic, or asphalt on ground with unsightly road markings?
Ahahaha that's a fair point 🤣🤣 if you show a picture of Cheddar Gorge to someone outside of England, who has no knowledge of what the country has to offer, I am pretty sure they will be surprised. There's this common idea that England is London, other cities like Oxford, Cambridge, Liverpool, Manchester, etc. and flat, green country side. Ofcourse there's a lot more than just that, but this is what most know

Hi Sara, half a day is definitely enough :) the approximate time to do both sides is around 2h, so you can still do it in half day.
Defo half day. Allow 2 and a half hours for an enjoyable hike around both and some time to view the cliffs and cafes, shops from the ground
