We slept in a Monastery... And it was Terrible (Rila Monastery overnight)
As I was researching Bulgaria, I came across one of the most popular attractions in the country: Rila Monastery. As I continued my research, I realised you could actually spend the night at the monastery, which of course, I had to try for myself. So we decided to sleep there... and it was terrible. Come along as I share with you why we had a bad experience by staying overnight at Rila Monastery and whether I would recommend you to do the same or not.
Hope you guys enjoy it, and that you get the chance to visit soon! ❤️️

    the perfect place to learn patience in particular. Don't have expectations or it will be terrible..after all that is what monasteries are also perfect for. Facing yourself and all you hidden expectations that you have for yourself but project onto others..

      That’s a very good point! I felt like I didn’t fully enjoy the experience because of everything that happened, regardless of not really having any expectations in particular, but learning to be more patient is always good, and a virtue that humanity is losing more and more every day. Wishing you a wonderful 2025! :)

    It’s terrible to be uneducated about certain places and go there with your demands and then complain about it on TH-cam! This is an orthodox monastery, not a hotel! Still they have given the option for people to stay there, even though the monks try to live by certain rules which don’t include a lot of interaction with tourists. Usually people who stay there are also orthodox believers and would participate in the church as well on early mornings. I won’t comment the utter disrespect and ignorance of saying that somebody is cursing you in a monastery…

    • @danielazziptrips
      @danielazziptrips 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I never said I expected this to be a hotel - we were sleeping in a monastery, a holy place after all. I was excited to experience sleeping in such place for being a completely different experience and one that I truly wanted to appreciate. The problem here was lack of information - no only were we left wondering for a long time inside of the complex, but we could have been left outside with no way to come back inside because no one told us we were not allowed back in after 8pm, and just said we could leave after check-in. We had all our luggage inside so we would have been left to sleep in the streets! The question here was not commodity or being treated in any particular way, it was the constant lack of information that led to multiple inconveniences. No one on earth is a saint. We are human beings, we fail and we get upset. That guard was very upset with the whole thing, just like we were, but he was getting upset at us for our lack of information which was not our fault at the end of the day. And cursing someone is a saying, basically someone saying something impolite out of anger.

      @premierjourr 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You are not expecting it to be a hotel, but you are expecting to be greeted at reception and accommodated accordingly at 8 in the evening in a monastery…People who stay there go for a reason - to participate in the liturgies, to pray or if it’s just a tourist walk then it’s done during the day. It’s better to do more research before going to a monastery and then complaining how terrible it is because it didn’t meet your expectations. Everything is strict there and that’s for a reason

    • @danielazziptrips
      @danielazziptrips 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ that’s not what I said. I specifically said in the video that we were told the checkin was until 7pm, so we arrived before that but no one was there. If they were strict with times then there should be someone there to do our checkins so we wouldn’t be left wondering around the monastery with luggage. If I am told, be there by this time, that’s the time I will be there. So no, we were there on time. I did the research on website and I asked the appropriate questions - I made sure we were there before check in would be over and that we were allowed to leave for dinner, but no one told us we had to be back by 8pm. How can I do more research if the information is not available on their website nor is it passed on to us? I can’t magically guess the rules.

    why would you go so late to a monastery... it was disrespectful to treat the place as just a sleep over. it is one of the most amazing monasteries... if you would have not treat it as a tourist. yes, bulgarians are terrible at giving navigations, but i would be also annoyed to see tourists with trolley bags are hanging in the dark in a holy place.

    • @danielazziptrips
      @danielazziptrips 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hiya! First of all thank you for watching the video. We did not treat it as a sleep over, Rila Monastery was on our list of places to see in Bulgaria and we were excited to sleep there when we found out that this was possible! I really enjoy sleeping in places that are calm and relaxing and often out of the norm. We arrived before the latest time we could do our check-in - this was confirmed via WhatsApp before we arrived so we were not late at all. We walked around in the dark with our trolley bags exactly because the guard just kept pointing and sending us to a place that was closed and we didn’t know where it was. We spent about 20min if not longer looking for the “reception” because he did not help us much. And I would honestly disagree, we had locals giving us directions multiple times and they were amazing. I loved Bulgarians and love Bulgaria, we did not disrespect the monastery nor anyone involved, but we spent most of our time confused and lost because we were not given appropriate information on multiple occasions, that’s all. we didn’t want to be hanging there or walking around, we just wanted to check in and enjoy our stay in this beautiful location.

      @@danielazziptrips Well, so you basically tell ow that you liked it, but still gave it only 1 point? You are giving very different impression now. Thats all. Now you sound like all was top, except for the one guy. Then there should be less sensation in the headline.... like it was 1 point horror place. Guy obviously is not trained for tourism welcoming.

    • @danielazziptrips
      @danielazziptrips 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@elizakarmasalo did you watch the whole video or just saw the title, watched a few seconds and decided to comment this? I literally say in my video that I would recommend people to still come and experience sleeping in the monastery despite our experience being stressful for all of the reasons I mentioned. If the thumbnail and title wasn't the way that it is, you wouldn't click on the video. Unfortunately, that's how TH-cam works, and creators are forced to play the game. If you watch the whole video you will understand that it was not a horror place, but it was still a terrible experience. And I give people my advice so they can avoid having a bad experience like we did and enjoy their time in Rila Monastery.

    • @elizakarmasalo
      @elizakarmasalo 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@danielazziptrips Clearly you are getting triggered and I don't see why. For your information, I did watch the whole video. Still, you advertise the video with the word "Terrible" in it and give 1 point. So that is the contradiction. Maybe it is your sale point, but it is also a cognitive dissonance. I get impression from the video all over that it was ok to be there, but nothing special or soulful as an experience. Main storyline was the rudeness and not responding your app... that was your main point. I think it was actually rude to film the priest. So if I would be a foreigner planning to sleep over there, I would be hesitant after watching this. You know whatI mean? If not, then lets settle... you like and recommend the place, but advertise it as TERRIBLE:

      Hi there really glad you liked the video! Unfortunately when places like these get shared online and get a lot of views, they get ruined a lot faster thanks to people who don't care about them (not saying that's your case obviously). For that reason, I have decided to not share this information on my videos/blog posts, but make it available on my maps for those who want to explore them. I don't want to keep them for myself and I think others also have the right to see them but I do want to do my best to preserve them - and this was what I came up with. All of these places and many more (over 130 abandoned places) can be found on my Hungary map 😉 Hope you understand it! 🙏 I have made a map with everything I could possibly find in Hungary including over 130 abandoned places: www.danielazzip.com/product-page/hungary-map

    It's true that insistent locals are annoying but I think we shouldn't see it as a scam, we just have to put ourselves in the shoes of poor people who survive from tourism

    • @danielazziptrips
      @danielazziptrips 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I do get your point for sure. People who have no other means to survive create their own, and I did say that I could understand why this happens so much. But it can become a scam. Someone charging tourists for parking in a free parking spot it is indeed a scam. While hustlers trying to sell you a tour guide are not a scam, since they provide a true service - despite of, of course, getting tiering of dealing with it day after day, - but there are worse problems to have. We saw many people in Tunisia hustling as they could - there was a lady selling freshly baked bread on the side of the road, a man stepping in the middle of the road to invite drivers to visit his shop… it was heartbreaking but also admirable to see people fighting with all they could to make a living, but that was a different case to those trying to mislead tourists into believing in something that isn’t true so they can profit out of them.

      @@danielazziptrips I don't blame you, but I try to call on the tourist to be more tolerant with these very poor people because I see sometimes ('I don't mean you) someone being a bit arrogant towards these people who have no other source of livelihood than the tourist. Knowing that I do not agree with the way these locals make a living

    This year in the beginning of February there was a demonstration in the Buda Caste. People were almost having a picnic sitting on blankets on the ground, the weather was so mild. And it was evening. But that's rare in Budapest.
