  • Would you give up drinking for a million dollars? Because that just might be a fraction of what you'd make going sober 👀 In this video, we run the numbers on the money surrounding drinking, the opportunity cost of buying a beer, and how Gen Z is becoming known as the 'sober curious generation'.
Let's talk about the tension between alcohol vs your bank account, how marketing has sold us the idea that alcohol is essential for socializing, and the increasing normalization of sobriety.

Great video! From my perspective as a healthcare worker, I should add the health costs of alcohol. In the past there was research saying that one glass of wine a day is healthy for your cardiovascular system. While this might be true, new research has come out to show that one alcoholic beverage a day can increase the risk of breast cancer in women. Alcohol consumption in general increases the risk of cancer in both genders. So by choosing to not drink, you might also be saving on those hospital bills in the future.

Agreed! Interestingly, the cardiovascular health claims have been entirely debunked. Early studies failed to weed out the folks who quit drinking due to health problems; once they controlled for this, the “benefit” vanished. And France’s method for counting cardiovascular events was also skewed to heavily underreport their cases (their low numbers and high intake of red wine led to a lot correlation/causation erroneous assumptions). Really interesting public health discoveries 👍🏼 but a bummer for those who like to drink 👎🏼

At first I didn't drink alcohol because my parents didn't give me any poket money and I also had no friends to drink alcohol with. But later my close friend told me, that she made an informed decision neither to drink alcohol (even at family gatherings, like New year selebration) nor to smoke cigarettes, because it's dumb and a huge waste of money. And at that moment I realized, that she's right.
At first people are being convinced that it's cool to drink, then they drink more and more and eventually get addicted.
I can't explain why, but I developed an aversion to alcohol, and since then I began to notice alcohol propaganda in media more often. Maybe I'm too dramatic, but I wish bloggers would cover a problem of alcohol propaganda more. Because there's nothing cool in getting drunk and acting like an imbecile afterwards or not being able to walk straight. And I don't know if it's only a "russian thing" but people always try to get me drunk and assume I'm the odd one, because I refuse to do it. There are depictions of alcohol in most of the books, films and it's always portrayed as something fun and cool.
Cigarettes are the same thing. They don't help you relax, they just help you to develop an addiction. And they are so heavily romanticized, that people don't realize how stupid it is to create an addition and then to constantly spend your money when withdrawal starts.
And once again, maybe it's only me, who sees such a big problem with it, but I also think people don't realize that they are being misled and manipulated by alcohol and cigarettes companies, who just want to take advantage of them. They think it's their choice to start drinking alcohol at an early age, but I think that's just because older generations portray it as something cool and it's a vicious cycle.

Everyone has a vice. If you're not spending on alcohol, you're spending on something else. Be it gambling, fashion, shopping, food, drugs, whores, trading, cars, guns, woodworking, sports, home reno, tabletop gaming or whatever. The only way you're actually going to save is to identify your own personal money sink and cut back on _that,_ specifically.

I've never had a drink because I've just never liked the taste of any alcohol. But I also come from a family that drinks regularly who keep trying to convince me to drink whenever I see them- so I take a sip of whatever they're offering just to confirm that nope, I still don't like it. It might be an acquired taste, but if it's something I have to force myself to enjoy then I don't want it.

I think all the numbers underestimate things, as the average alcohol spends tend to include low and moderate drinkers. I'm from Ireland ( a country not known for sobriety) and a weekend drinking session for most young people would probably run to 10-15 drinks in a night (I'm not joking). With each drink at a bar being about ~$7 (beers being less, cocktails more), you're looking at 105 just on alcohol. Most such nights out end up including taxi rides home. That could add another $50. So it's not uncommon to spend $150-$200 on a session. If you do that once a week, you could easily end up spending $800-$1000 a month on drinking.
I've saved significant sums of money in my youth. I did this by not drinking, gambling, doing drugs or owning a car. Some say I'm not having any fun. Well, I'd just like to show people my hefty video game collection, or the fact that I've probably done more international travel in the last 10 years then both of my parents in their entire lifetimes COMBINED.

people associate drinking with socializing but just get a cheaper mocktail when meeting friends. going to a club with table service (around $500 each)? why? you're just getting scammed. go to clubs/bars with free entry. When you want to get drunk? Predrink and make a delicious cocktail at home before you go out and carpool with a designated driver.

I've quit mainly bc the price of a vape is too high but I'm on patches (which is still kinda expensive) now bc I literally can't function in a day without nicotine in my system (like drinking coffee doesn't help) but hopefully the finances will work out eventually :)

I drink very little, and never touch drugs/weed. When my mortgage comes due, I peel a little off the roll. I looked at my friends in my early 20s, and saw that drinking and smoking herb was the difference between struggling and living stress-free. And now i'm at the age where those same friends are starting to feel the long-term health challenges of decades of drinking.

I live in Russia, investing since 18 and alcohol plays a gastronomic role in my life. Usually I spend 100-150$ a month on wine and beer. Sometimes I switch to Kvass and N/A beer for a couple of weeks.
IMO not buying alcohol doesn't equal save money. The sober people I know spend a lot of money on snacks, ice cream, exotic fruits and so on. So it's financial education which should be prime to managing spendings - if you're left with 200$ by the end of the month you're more likely to spend it on some duds than invest

  • @Melissaistired

Well, in the states that have legalized weed a lot more people smoke. Coming down from a high normally is a lot easier than coming down from being blackout drunk. Also, I'm not sure if this is other people's experience, but I know a lot of people with alcoholic parents. It makes you worried that you're going to turn into an alcoholic. All coupled with the constant, don't drink campaigns when we were in middle and highschool plus just the fact that it's not that cool... It makes sense. You do not look cool when you're drunk and I think everyone knows that now. It can be fun, and sometimes I do drink when I'm with friends. But for me, my husband, and honestly most of my friends (all gen z) it's not normally a weekly or even monthly thing. It is super expensive normally and the stuff that actually tastes good seems to cost the most 🥲

I drink mainly for the appreciation of the art and socially now. I'd maybe get buzzed or more maybe once a year if that. I do enjoy having a pour of whiskey every couple of days now.
I've more so gotten into the culture of it and buying bottles to collect which has cost quite bit, but it's more of a hobby over time with somewhat of an investment potential. If I drink a bottle, it may last me a month or more.
whiskey and the entire brewing process fascinates me. Just how we extract all of these flavors into a beer or spirit and the patience required sometimes to do so.

My hubby and I don’t really drink. On special occasions with loved ones we might, but not always. No smoking or pot. We save so so so much money that way. To the point my hubby’s bosses have made fun of us, “how do you have so much? Do you not do anything?” We do plenty, just not that disposable, unhealthy stuff all the time. We save up, go on trips, pay off debt, build things, and enjoy frugal gatherings. We have a potluck every weekend with family. I love it! I don’t care if it sounds “boring” to some. Drinking gets old and loses its luster.

Your video has put me in a rare sharing mood. Firstly, our cases are so close to being similar, although my parents have always drunk alcohol with their meals or relax, naturally when I was in my single digits curiosity got the better of me, and I asked my parents who were very open to the idea of me trying it from time to time. The earliest I can remember having my first drink was a beer was at 6 or so didn't like it, sips of wine a few times didn't like it, fast-forward a bit to a celebration of my elder sibling's academic accomplishment, everyone was given a glass of champagne, and I thought given occasion, being well above 21, as I live in the USA, heck with it let's see what It tastes like; *It was so terrible* I spit it back into the glass and handed it to one of the guys at the bar.
Now as a full-grown semi-functional adult, I've no desire to drink any of the stuff or engage in the culture, for two reasons one is cost which you've only justified more so, but the second is growing up in a 'Party Town'; hearing about all the trouble people get up to and how easily people can make fools of themselves, even my own sibling that's had a few nights that didn't put them in the best of light, It's all stuff I want nothing to do with and don't understand.
Thanks for this and your other videos!

My own mother used to try push me to drink when I was a teenager and tell me I was boring because I didn't.

many people, who are cocktail and liquor enthusiasts defiantly collect liquor as a hobby. some resale it, the secondary liquor market is pretty big but illegal. some are flavor explorers of a specific liquor like whisky. others like the experience of making that cocktails. it is like cooking and exploring new flavors combination . for many it is a hobby that spending the money is worth the increase in quality of life, if you don't go over board and check in about dependence issues. also it is way cheaper to buy bottles then going out. bars cost to much

As someone who's rarely ever drank and hasn't had any alcohol in years (I just don't like it. So why drink it?), kudos to you, Cara, for not drinking. I've always had a lot of fun without drinking, and with none of the lack of control that people have when they're drunk.
I do know that I spend a lot less money than my friends who drink, and I also haven't experienced the loss of control that comes from getting drunk like a lot of people I know. I'm glad that I have nothing to regret as a result of that. I think it helps, too, that my mom wasn't a drinker at all, aside from the odd glass of wine. My dad used to drink a lot until around the time I was 12, and I remember the odd time when he was really drunk. He wasn't abusive or anything. He never passed the jolly stage. But it still scared me and I decided from an early age that I never wanted to get to that point. Also, as I said, I just don't like alcohol.
With the economy today, I don't know how many people can afford things like alcohol or cigarettes or pot or other such things. Somehow they find a way, but I certainly couldn't afford it.

I’d rather just hang out at the house, smoke some weed, and hang out with my dog

  • @1980rlquinn
    @1980rlquinn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I appreciate the topic, but there's a lot that isn't covered and is obviously missing: the size of the mark ups on drinks in restaurants and bars, whether one drinks less or more if buying the same liquor to drink at home, how alcohol use affects productivity and how much it costs employers, the effect of short and long term use on cognitive function and how that contributes to behavior and decision-making... All of these contribute to how alcohol keeps you poor.
Maybe this video in particular is only for Gen Zers who already don't drink to feel better about themselves? The "fun graphic" at 8:53 is such a wild departure from reality, it feels insulting to people who actually drink, as if the person who made it can only imagine that people who go out are either sober and perfectly manicured or slovenly wasted lushes getting rolled out the door at closing time with nothing in between.
