    PCM? BCM? I dunno... but they flashed the vehicle and it's still working perfectly almost a year later. ;)

      Hey OFFRD - thank you very much for this video update. We just purchased a new 2019 JL, my wife drove 300 miles to meet me, long story short she had the exact same issues you described. I took it to the dealer today and he said the computer would not let him flash my vehicle with no defaults or recalls. Do you have any info from your dealer I could take to mine? We appreciate your help!

      It is a BCM reconfiguration (technically not an update). There are also some ground contacts that may have poor connection if you have low assist.

    This works but it seems as though the service department at the dealerships are not aware of this being the solution I had to memorize what you said in the video and tell them that Word for Word because if I hadn’t said anything about the BCM or getting a new configuration downloaded they were going to send me home with the car and tell me nothings wrong. So glad I found this video before I dropped the car off for service

    This is interesting. We drove a 2019 2 door Sport S. a few days ago. I could feel it as I was accelerating from pulling out of the dealer. Came back and and the salesmen seemed surprised and said I should drive a 4 door. The 4 door wasn't as bad as the 2 door but it wasn't good. I went to the dealer to buy a Jeep and left disappointed. The 2 door had 25 miles on it and the 4 door had 70 miles.

    For all those wondering... There is a service bulletin from FCA issued July 7th, 2018 on this. I have done my best to transcribe all relevant information. I have had several Jeep Wranglers, a YJ, TJ, 2 JKs and now this JL, and its the worst driving Jeep on the highway I have owned because of this steering issue. I am having the computer in my 2018 JEEP JLU Sahara flashed this coming Friday at my dealership so hopefully this fixes this issue. See below.
    NUMBER 08-092018
    GROUP: 08- Electrical
    DATE: July 7,2018
    SUBJECT:
    Low Steering Assist at Highway Speeds.
    OVERVIEW:
    This bulletin involves using wiTECH 2 to perform a Restore Vehicle Configuration routine. The reconfiguration will update the Eplectro-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS) calibrations.
    MODELS:
    2018 (JL) Jeep Wrangler
    NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built within the following markets/countries: NAFTA
    NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or after October 30, 2017 (1030XX) and on or before May 08, 2018 (0508XX) equipped with Long Wheel Base (Sales Code 595)
    SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
    A customer may describe a high steering effort occurring only during colder ambient and system operating temperatures and at speeds above 96KPH (60MPH). At lower speeds or warmer system temperatures the steering assist will feel normal.
    DIAGNOSIS:
    Using a Scan Tool (wiTECH) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify all related systems are functioning as desgined. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) or symptom conditions, other than the ones listed above are present, record the issues on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.
    If the customer describes the symptom/condition listed above, perform the Repair Procedure.
    REPAIR PROCEDURE:
    1. Using wiTECH 2, perform ""Restore Vehicle Configuration" routine. This routine can be found in Guided Diagnostics. Follow all screen prompts to complete this routine.
    2. Clear any DTCs that may have been set in any module due to performing a Restore Vehicle Reconfiguration
    TIME ALLOWANCE:
    Labor Operation No. Description Skill Category Amount
    18-19-02-DS Module, Body Control(BCM) - 6- Electrical and 0.2 Hrs.
    Restore Vehicle Configuration Body Systems
    (0 - Introduction)

    This makes more sense to me than all these people making "adjustments" to their steering box and linkage. Almost everything on these vehicles (not just Jeep) is controlled by a computer anymore. I did, however, see that a couple of people discovered their tie rod ends were extremely loose, so I would definitely check those. Good video.

    Nice to know. We were looking at purchasing my wife a new Unlimited 4 door. We went on vacation last week, and returned today to Destin Florida, and found a 2019 Wrangler Sport Unlimited 4 door at Enterprise. It was the most miserable highway trip from Ohio, Florida, and back. My first vehicle was a 1955 Ford F100, in 1994. Even with the old brass worm gear, solid I beam front end, and no power steering...... It had less "play" in the wheel than the Jeep. At time of rental, the Jeep had 1,700 miles on it. My wife was so heartbroken because she just knew she would love it, and ended up not comfortable running 80+ on interstates. She drove in town once we arrived, but still was disgusted with the amount of effort and constant back and forth motion to keep it straight. This may give her hope yet..... If I decide to tell her, shhhhh ....... Lol.

    I’m experiencing the same issue with my Camaro. Purchased brand new and all of a sudden a year later it will not drive straight. Took it to the dealership and they cited that I needed an aliment. Got the car back and notice it drove no different than before the Alignment. Took it back 3 more times. Nothing is wrong according to them. They drive it around the block and bring it back. I get on the expressway and it’s all over the place. Took it back a 4 time now they are saying my car is Tramling? There’s no way to fix it, it’s just the way the car is made.Here I am a year later and the car still doesn’t track straight. They are now stating they have never heard of this issue and can’t help me. I’ve suspected a computer issue all along. Not sure why they refuse to find the real issue and fix my car.

Steering was pretty good on good roads but still not so good on crappy roads. Since then I lifted the JL and added 37’s. This made steering sloppy again but Jeep replaced the aluminum steering box with a steel one which greatly improved the steering. We havent had the chance to get back to Moab but maybe this fall.

    • @4-LOW
      @4-LOW  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The spec on the lower ball joints is 15 ft/lbs initial and 35 final. That's easy to achieve with a small ratchet. So, they aren't supposed to be cranked down hard. There is a cotter pin to maintain torque spec on them though.

    • @4-LOW

      Yes, the U62 recall calls for flashing the PCM. It just so happens that the PCM controls lots of other things too, one being the electronic steering. After they flashed my JL the steering is now cured too. Call it a nice side effect! :)

    Flash engine controller to fix steering issue... I think you misunderstood your dealer

  • @fiero880
    @fiero880 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So changing the tire pressure from 47 to 35 is a waste of time ? Or finding 4 loose ball joints ? Dealer even found JL’s on the lot with the above issues. The TSB address some of the issue but there is much more adding to the “loose steering issue”. Rumored the steering boxes on later JL built after April ish were built looser due to the prior being built too tight. The “waste of time” part i didn’t like. I can almost guarantee you still have a 1/4 dead spot in your steering. Go test drive a JK and you will see.

    • @4-LOW
      @4-LOW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For fixing a steering issue? Yes, utter waste of time. Excessive tire pressure can cause poor tire wear, increase fuel economy, decrease ride quality, etc. But it won't make a vehicle dart right and left repeatedly. Loose ball joints? The spec is 35 ft/lbs on the bottom ball joint. They are not supposed to be as tight as you can get them. Snug with a regular ratchet is all, and then the cotter pin for security. Too many people assume the ball joints are loose because they can turn them. As far as the steering box goes...slightly tight would be best because of course it will wear in over time. The steering box was never actually the problem, at least not on the majority of these Jeeps. I'm sure some guys had exceptions, since they sell 30,000 of these each month.

      I finally got my dealership to flash the PCM. It took a LOT of arguing to get it done. It is unbelievable what a difference it made. I still can't believe it. Too bad jeep is making it so difficult. Thank you so much for the video. I would have still been sorry I bought the Jeep. @@4-LOW

    no flash will fix this problem, it has a recall for the steering damper, THAT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM

    • @4-LOW
      @4-LOW  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The steering damper has nothing to do with it. You can run with NO steering damper and it'll drive fine. FCA is using the steering damper as a cheap excuse for an expensive problem.

    I test drove a wrangler for the first time and walked away because the steering was horrible. Good idea but how can they sell new keeps that drive so bad? Makes me think no one cares about quality at jeep or the dealerships. The salesman said that it’s normal!

    HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FLASHING THE PCM, YOU NEED TO GET THE RECALL DONE AT THE DEALER AND THEY WILL REPLACE THE STEERING DAMPER

      It's a first model year vehicle. All first model year vehicles have bugs to work out, especially FCA vehicles. I'm not too worried about it at this point. They're proactively working on fixes under warranty. No biggie.

      MEL LEV I’ve driven several on a major highway. No issues. Pretty sure the entire fleet would be halted if all JL’s were lemons... Don’t you think there are a few regulations in America to prevent unsafe vehicles and a company’s reputation is at stake?
