France has a lot of unmarked police cars, especially in Paris where a lot of these videos are shot. Much more common than in the US, or anywhere else in Europe. Like I said in previous videos, the French sirens are very effective and they are tuned like real music. The fire truck siren is tuned in a major second, the police siren is tuned in a perfect fourth, and the rapid response ambulance at 5:05 and the ambu at 7:19 are tuned in a perfect fifth. Very rewarding to listen to. The car at 5:05 is a Mitsubishi Pajero, the police car at 6:55 is a Ford Mondeo wagon, which is indead the Fusion in the US.
You say that the fire truck at 6:33 is quite compact. Well, in a big city, this is normal size. Compared to a normal US fire truck, these EU trucks are about half the length and at least 1 meter less wide.

We missed a lot of good Sapeurs Pompiers vehicules and a lot of good Gendarmerie vehicules by the fact that everything is shot in Paris.

the Mitsubishi at 5:40 is a SMUR unit. SMUR stands for Structure Mobile Urgence et Reanimation, or Emergency and Reanimation Mobile Unit. It's also called SAMU sometimes. Usually when you see them run in SUVs or cars it's a medical team coming in as back-up to an emergency. They operate and are dispatched out of hospitals, and also have their own ambulances. The main difference between them and the ambulances of the fire department is that the fire department ambulances are dispatched out of fire stations (duh), SMUR ambulances are white or white and yellow, and SMUR teams are always composed of a trauma doctor or trauma surgeon, a nurse, a driver and sometimes a pediatrician or an anesthesist. It's often referred to as a mobile hospital reanimation team. Also, inside their ambulance it is decked out like a mobile operating room to perform emergency procedures such as a bypass, or specific procedures to liberate airways.

SAMU and SMUR aren't the same thing, SAMU answers calls and SMUR is a mobile unit sent to the spot, SAMU is often written on SMUR cars because it is often sent by them

There is no equivalent in the us but the field surgeons. Us philosophy is catch and run. They pack up the victim and try to keep them alive until they reach the hospital. France first stabilize the victim then transport them. Hence the smur

to give a bit of the context, when you see this kind of vehicule, there is a very nasty show somewhere on the road, those people are bad news, one of their task is stabilizing victims so they can survive an helicopter medevac.

    • @spebonne
      @spebonne ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@nraynaud survive any kind of medevac. They come as soon as the life is in the balance, be it trauma or simple heart attack.
In fact they are the only onsite people that can legally call to a stop cpr once started (they are doctors). Without them firefighters and other rescue personels have to keep administering all emergency technics until the victim is at the hospital. So usually they are sent as soon as such a call might be necessary.

I am an American living in Germany. Something we have here and in most European countries is an emergency doctor supporting ambulance calls. They travel in their own vehicle where needed and continue to another location afterwards if needed. They do not travel in the ambulance. Only EMTs travel in them. Paramedics are seldom seen over here as they do not fit into the structure here.

In Denmark (at least in the town where I live) the firefighters have the chief in a separate car like the ambulance services. Tho the chief usually only goes with the firefighters if they are responding to a big incident, like a major crash site, environmental site, major fire, etc.

    • @EmergencyWalter
      @EmergencyWalter ปีที่แล้ว +2

Correction: Paramedics are very frequently seen in Germany. At least the German counterpart "Notfallsanitäter". But well, I think an American paramedic is allowed to do more stuff, what is here only allowed to the emergency physician. EMT or the German Counterpart "Rettungssanitäter" are also common. A German ALS Ambulance (Rettungswagen), which is the standard type of ambulance responding to emergency calls, is staffed with at least one Notfallsanitäter and one Rettungssanitäter.
I think other European countrys might have similar levels of qualification, but I'm not an expert in this.

in France, relief for victims follows a particular "philosophy" which can be summarized as follows:
It is the emergency service which moves to the site of the accident and not the victim who is moved as quickly as possible.
With the doctors, and the equipment of an emergency service on site, absolute emergency medical acts can be considered on the spot if necessary,
after the victim is moved to hospital services.

Ok so you already know me, the french graduated ambulance man… 😜
    - SMUR is the mobile service for any life emergency first aid, it’s he hospital’s service. They use either SUV or SWagon with 3 people inside: ambulance man driving (it could have been me), doctor, nurse. When they’re alone like this, another vehicle for casualty carrying the wounded person is not far or already on site.
    - the Jussieu Secours ambulance truck is a private casualty carrying service, only a graduated ambulance man (me again) and a not graduated one that has first aid certifications though.
    - the red firemen casualty carrying trucks (the first Renault one you saw) does the same as the private service ambulance, with a few more options inside though. No doctor or nurse inside, only firemen.
    So how it works now:
1- you call the SAMU: it’s a call center with doctors, ambulance men, nurses that receive your « 911 » call (in France we do the 15 on the phone), there’s one in each departement, so 95 at least in european France, there are otjers in Guadeloupe, Guyana, et ..
2- they decide what vehicle then will do the rescue, they choose if it will be the firemen, the SMUR, or the private ambulance service.
3- if it’s a vital life engaging matter, SMUR SW or SUV with doctor + truck from either firemen or SMUR truck or private ambulance service truck (Jussieu here) depending on the needs and what is available at the moment.
Hope it helps you understand 😉

Versailles is kind of small, but it was the residence of the king, just next to Paris, so it's still relatively busy. On average people living in Versailles are more on the wealthy side, plus there's the historic and touristy side of it, with the Chateau de Versailles and it's gardens, so I'm not surprised that the city is equiped with a range of efficient and well maintained vehicles. I'd say that french emergency vehicles are good, but depending on the area of the country you're in you'll find some older equipment, or less maintained ones.

5:41 It is a SMUR vehicle (EMS).
In France, in case of a medical emergency, one would call the "SAMU", a platform that receives emergency medical calls. Each département (a territorial subdivision) operates a SAMU (hence why on some vehicles you can see things like "SAMU 78", it means it is the SAMU from departement 78, Yvelines, west of Paris). The SAMU operator is a trained doctor that will assess the caller's medical situation and act accordingly. Depending on the seriousness of the situtation, the SAMU may ask SOS Médecins to send a GP, the fire department to send an ambulance or, in case of life-threatning situations the SAMU will dispatch a SMUR unit (Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Service) that is basically a fully equipped ambulance with a paramedic, a nurse and a doctor. Smaller vehicles (such as the SUV in the video) can be sent along for extra material and/or extra personel

Heuliez did most of these conversions using a DS or CX Safari as the base car (as well as making the BX and XM estate cars for Citroen). Then there were Tissier DS, CX and XM conversions with the extra long wheelbase which had six wheels with double rear axles.

Nowadays the strategy is different instead of racing car, the ambulance is more a mobile hospital where a couple of doctors can provide a wide range emergency treatments.

if there's no time (or capacities) for an ambulance or the help must arrive asap, the SMUR-units are much more narrow to pass through traffic, but also bc they may take shortcuts by driving over sidewalks and similar road issues, which a regular ambulance can't do, due to its dimensions, weight, etc.

Well, after 3 weeks I think you got a response for this, but I’ll still add mine lol
At 5:20, that SUV is a vehicle of the SMUR, or Urgent Medical Help Service (Service d'Aide Médicale Urgente) that transports a doctor to the scene of an accident to take thorough care before the transportation in the ambulance of the Sapeur Pompiers that is usually the first responders to arrive. Also, theses two types of Medical responders has different numbers to call in case of an emergency: there’s the 15, for pure medical emergency, like a heart attack, the 18, for less specific emergencies like a fire, gas leak, car accident… There’s also the 17, the Police, the 112, that I highly recommend if you’re a tourist because I gives access to all emergency services in only 1 number to memorize, all like 911 I guess, and you can get translated instructions from it. Finally there’s the 114 that is for deaf persons (you talk by text to emergency servicies), It can also be very useful for many emergency situations when you can’t talk like a kidnapping. Anyway, I hope this helped you, and congrats to whoever made it this far.

2:08 Yes, the Iveco daily are indeed "heavy duty" because they are pretty much all armored, some more heavily than others, this one was on the lighter side.
Regarding unmarked vehicles in France, it's quite different from the US, because US unmarked are still police spec vehicles that differ from the normal production ones, exhaust tips, wheels, sometimes bumpers, ground clearance, obvious lights and obvious radio equipment all give away the vehicle at a glance. In France, unmarked vehicles are just normal cars, and MUCH more difficult to spot, all they have is reduced radio equipment, because there are no visible lights (they usually use a single magnetic light on the roof when needed, like the Peugeot 207 and Renault Megane you've seen at 7:48). Some of the unmarked vehicle are also obvious because they're heavily armored, so they will have a completely different suspension setup and specific wheels with smaller rims to accommodate airless tires, but that's not the usual kind.
If you want to see a variety of police vehicles, there's a channel here on TH-cam that's called "Stephane Paris Production" that shows mostly police convoys, and it shows quite a variety of police vehicles and convoys in France mostly, from normal Police vans to super heavily armored "normal" vehicles and even some exotic stuff (i.e. non police armored stuff for VIP protection).

    Bonjour, @IWrocker !
The Mitsubishi SUV at 5:50 is a SMUR = Service Mobile d'Urgence et de Réanimation = Mobile Emergency and Reanimation Service. This kind of car takes a doctor and his gear to a place where 1) there is already a FD ambulance without a doctor or 2) takes a doctor to an emergency site faster (I mean a lot !) than an ambulance.
A SMUR belongs to a SAMU = Service d'Aide Médicale d'Urgence = Emergency Medical Assistance Service.
Please note tha the emergency services « strategy » in France differs from a lot of countries, including the USA. In the US, you'll send an ambulance with paramedics, whose mission is to bring a patient back to an hospital's ER as quickly as possible.
In France, in cas of a « heavy » emergency, you'll send and ambulance _with_ a doctor on board. The mission will be to do whatever it takes on site to allow safe transport to an hospital. Thus, we often see ambulances remaining a long time on site, bringing additionnal doctors, nurses or gear, if required. Then the transport part itself, if most of the time done at a rather low speed.

In France there is distinctive 1st responders :
Marked Police cars or vans. Formerly white and black (with a comeback to that retro look) but usually white with mostly blue stripes.
Marked red firetrucks or ambulances manned by firemens. Military Sapeurs-pompiers in and around Paris, Military-Navy Marins-Pompiers in and around Marseille, just pompiers everywhere else.
White ambulances or cars marked SAMU (Service d'Aide Médicale d'Urgence / Urgent Medical Care Service) or SMUR like the one at 5:20 (Service Mobile d'Urgence et de Réanimation / Mobile ICU) sometimes with added markings for pediatric care (those are the most users of police escorts, for good reasons).
Whites ambulances with orange stripe and blue triangle marked Protection civile are analog to what FEMA does. They are always present at any big outdoors event.
    Red cross ambulances.
Unmarked police cars are used either by patrolling squad in plain clothes (la BAC) or by detectives (formely inspecteurs, today lieutenant, capitaine, commandant and still commissaires).
The philosophy is, as stated by someone else, to bring the medical team and doctors to the site.
During the 1995 terrorist attack in a RER (regional subway) station in the center of Paris, a field hospital was even set up even though one of the many hospitals was across the bridge at walking distance. The victims were then sent to the appropriate hospital for their injuries or to not overcrowed the nearest hospital.
When a temporary public stand collapsed during a football (soccer) match in Corsica, that system made it possible to transport the victims to trauma centers as far as Marseille and Paris by planes.

Keep in mind many of the vehicle manufacturer supply cab chassis vehicles and the end user gets a third party to build a custom body on the rear chassis space.

5:08 Judging by the model of the car (Renault Laguna) and the policeman's attire, I would say it was not an undercover officer's car but rather a close security officer's, here in France, close security of the president and officials is not Secret Service's jurisdiction but Police Nationale's (not to be mistaken with Police Municipale, which is more like the local cops, they are often regarded as bonified mall cops, as some of them may have guns but in most cases they won't and most of their job is giving parking fines).
Edit : 8:01 these are indeed more "undercover" cars, those are cars the anti-crime brigade, known as "BAC" here, would use. These were a Peugeot 207 (the black one) and a Renault Megane, both of them exist with 200 HPish engines, have great chassis and are easily modified because they're used in racing series notably rallye and there are a ton of them on the roads (most of them without the biggest engine available and even more without mods, as driving a modded cars here on the road is very very risky regarding your driving license and potential seizing of your car; if you mod it, it's track only ;)) which make them very good cars for those kind of endeavours. About hints giving them out, if they're parked and you can get up close there might be some cluey details, like the CB radio, blue removable gyro and Police sun blocks you can get, but in traffic you would only notice them when it's too late ^^
These were shot at Versailles, it's about 15 miles away from Paris, there's a 'small' château there, nice gardens :P

-We got a very bunch of unmarked "police" cars. They can be both Gendarmerie and Police. As well the Police unmarked car can be drived by BAC unit which are a specialized police unit.
    - Then for the Third vehicule : This is the SAMU' car with the SMUR crew. It's a a special Hospital Unit with a Medic, a nurse and an ambulance driver which are deployed for vital emergency. Now they have the same siren as the US. We mostly have Mitsubishi and Wolkswagen Amaroc for this units.
-The Ford police car is probably the Ford Mondeo III. Police can have any type of vehicule. But they mostly have Renault ones
-The Jussieu Secours ambulance is a Private ambulance (Which is not own by the State). Jussieu is the most important private Ambulance compagny in France. We do separate Ambulance and FireFighter.

In Portugal some unmarked cars are inpounded cars and sometimes people lend them to the police in exchange of a lower ticket, other times they become forgotten and the police keeps them... and lights are mobile and attach to the windowscreen with succion cups and they use the lighter port to get power... as for the siren, its a simple installation also. These kind of vehicles are mostly used for mobile radar camping.

    From French :
    These are mostly historical sirens...
3 tones = Non-urgent medical (White Private Ambulance)
2 tones = Urgent (Fireman and Fireman helping victims "VSAV" - SAMU or SMUR Emergency Medical, Police/Gendarmerie)
There may be private Ambulances with the authorization of SAMU or SMUR which in these specific cases may be in emergency vehicles and used 2 tones.
You should know that the 3 tones are not priority as are the 2 tones, but benefit from an ease of passage, according to the law the 3 tones vehicles cannot therefore run out of red lights and can even have controls or fines.
Do not confuse Ambulances in Summary:
Private Ambulance (White and blue) 3 tones
SAMU/SMUR ambulance (White and blue with yellow) 2 tones
Firefighter "VSAV" Ambulance (Red) 2 tones
    Thank you and you're welcome.
PS : But for some time our SAMU/SMUR
Use in experimentation an American sierne in addition to the classic 2 tone.

1: Renault Master - Renault's heavy duty van chassis
2: Iveco Daily - same class as Renault Master, used to be part of Fiat
3: Ambulance is a Renault Trafic - the smaller Renault van. And the greenkeeper flatbed is a same weight class Sevel 2nd generation. I did not see the actual brand, Sevel is not acting on its own but a joint venture between Peugeot/Citroen and Fiat for light commercial vehicles. Basically the successor of this one is sold in the US as Ram ProMaster.
    4: Renault Master again
5: Renualt Laguna, mid-size passenger car
6: Mitsubishi Pajero (Montero in the US and Spanish speaking countries due to the name being an 18+ word in Spanish). Thought at first it was a Toyota Landcruiser in the dark, but the shape of the rear side windows gave it away. Mitusbishi stopped selling the Pajero in 2021, now they only make subcompacts and crossovers.
    7: the next Renault Master
8: Mercedes Actros, Mercedes' heavy duty truck. This one is a 20 ton GVW with 310 hp (can be decrypted from the number on the door)
9: Ford Mondeo - indeed the wagon version of the European counterpart to the Fusion
10: Fiat Ducato - 3rd generation Sevel van, also Ram Promaster in the US. The EU brands just got a facelift and Ram did not. So it is acually a quite new vehicle
11: Peugeot 208 (subcompact) followed by a Renault Megane (compact)
12: Citroen Berlingo (comparable to a Ram ProMaster City). The Renault Kangoo competitor model was actually the grey one parked in front of the Renault Twingo microcar
    13: Another Renault Trafic
14: Probably Peugeot Partner (if not it's a Citroen Berlingo as well - same car) followed by a 2nd generation Peugeot Boxer (Sevel van)

I'm from France. Actually I know that for the first vehicle, some of them have so much room at the back that a whole crew can operate all around the stretcher. Like if they where working in an operating room. I know also that one of the doctrines in first aid in France is that if a patient is not transportable, you HAVE to bring the hospital to him. That's why some rescue vehicles and ambulance have so much stuff and room at the back.
In France, emergency doctors can travel and work at the back of an EMT vehicle even if they have their own vehicles. Also most of the EMTs in France are firefighters. They're always trained as rescuers and firefighters. However, they can't administrate medicaments by syringe.
The one at 5:22 is an emergency doctor service SUV. It's called SMUR (Emergency Rapid Response Unit), they are not Firefighters, they are based in hospitals.
I'm really interested about emergency services and how it is around the world. Here is a fun fact : in the U.S.A. you have one unique number to call for emergency : 911. Here in France we have more numbers, each emergency service is independent of the others.

SMUR = Emergency Medical Assistance/Service (2 Doctors or 1 with Para-medic). Secours in France = rescue in the USA.
Vehicles are more compact, they have to fit down 500 or even 1000 year old narrow streets in many cases.
As to Versailles, pre-Revolution (1789) it was pretty much the countryside, home to the Palace of the Sun King (Louis XIV).
Now, suburb/bedroom community to Paris (long commute by RER). Fire Depts. in France are highly specialised, Paris are world renowned,
they pretty much do it all: climbers, divers, NBC, you name it they have it. Ergo, in Nice & around the Med., the bulk of the firemen are all
ex-navy: combat-divers, clearance-divers and what not, for waterborne operations in general, in addition to firefighting.

I'm pretty sure using the siren without having the passenger in the back is a violation, but who are you ganna call to complain?
about the size of the fire trucks: when your streets were designed in the medieval times, you need the appropriate truck :) More in details: Paris as been heavily remodelled with larger streets, it looks quite different from the medieval times, but a number of medieval size streets have been kept, so they don't roll the dice and use small trucks everywhere, I think it's also parctical in the traffic jams.

Current RAM Promaster in the US are based on the previous generation of the Fiat Ducato/Peugeot Boxer/Citroën Jumper because even before the Stellantis merging Fiat and PSA had a long collaboration (40 years) for cargo vans with their Sevel factories subsidiary (Sevelnord in Frence and Sevel Sud in Italy).
Specific emergency vehicles are build by specific companies like Durisotti or Gruau. They add their own elements on the cargo van naked back platform.
Flatbed vans are more common in Europe than pickup vans because they mostly don't get out from the main roads and most forest roads are quite accesible for non AWD vehicles. Pickups are mainly used by people who have to drive on all terrains regularly, plus favorable tax cuts for pickups have disappeared recently due to environmental concerns.

the video you were watching is not recent, French emergency vehicles are more modern today and there are several of them, in this video we can see that there are only two types of ambulance, the fire brigade (always in red)
and the "smur" ambulance (some sound equipped with American sirens)
but there are others, and then the fire truck is no longer current, the model is different and finally to finish the color of our police vehicles we have changed since last year.

Well of course the trucks are compact! In french cities streets are on the narrower size. They already sometimes barely fit! (Cf Notre-Dame fire)

I the "SUV" is a SMUR = service mobile d'urgence et de réanimation => French for mobile emergency and resuscitation service. Because in french they're is a squad of mobile doctorswho provides first medical care directly on the road.
Here a deepl traduction of the wiki article :
The mobile emergency and resuscitation service, now called mobile emergency and resuscitation structure, often abbreviated to SMUR, is a hospital service consisting of one or more vehicles (called, depending on the country and the category, a mobile hospital unit, a radio-medical vehicle, etc.) intended to provide emergency medical assistance outside the hospital, often in conjunction with an ambulance. As well as when a patient requires medical care or monitoring. Indeed, certain patients and/or certain pathologies require emergency care at their bedside, and this, before any other mobilization. In this case, by calling 112 (formerly 100), the regulator will decide (depending on the pathology) to move an SMUR to the area, in order to provide extra-hospital care essential to the patient's survival. We can therefore affirm that the SMUR is an extension of the hospital structure to which it is attached. If the patient cannot come to the hospital, the hospital (the SMUR in this case) will go to the patient.
These vehicles are equipped in different ways depending on the country, but often contain at least a doctor, a nurse and a specialized ambulance driver.
The SMUR is not to be confused with the SAMU when it exists in some countries.
The United States and Canada do not have SMURs, but use MICUs (mobile intensive care units) for private and military transport.

2:30 They need a much more expensive and more restrictive truck license for all vehicles over 3.5 tons, and there are a lot of regulations so that trucks don't drive in cities, that's why there are many light vans in France.
5:50 In France the red ambulances are allocated to the fire stations, the firemans have no medical training, they intervene at the site of the accident and take care only of first aid and transport, if the injured cannot be transported without medication , the hospital sends a SMUR vehicle with doctors and a lot of equipment to help stabilize the injured for transport.
7:25 : The white ambulances are with private companies, they rarely intervene on the place of the accident, they deal most often with on the order of a doctor, or inter-hospital transport.
6:15 The streets are often narrow, the city firetrucks must be able to access everywhere
