Stop the press!!! Ok Vanessa you are the first woman that I have ever seen play the Hammond like a BOSS!!! I have a B3 and an A-102 not to mention a Nord Electro 73. I’m really a student to the organ and really covet your mojo on the greatest instrument ever made. The biggest challenge for someone like meself is finding someone to teach jazz organ. If you make an instructional video, I’ll be all over it. Thanks for the lesson!

Hi there and thank you for your message! I'm living in Rio de Janeiro and I don't have my Hammond with me at the moment, just the Nord for now ... but I do hope to do more Hammond videos when I have the setup to be able to, so I'll be sure to let you know if/when that happens. Anyway, women who are with us today who play the Hammond like a boss: Rhoda Scott (France/USA), Midori Ono & Atsuko Hashimoto (Japan), Barbara Dennerlein (Germany). Also, two greats who have passed on, but their recorded legacy lives: Shirley Scott & Trudy Pitts

Hi mojo :) Thanks for your comment! I'm mostly using 4-note voicings with either the 3rd or 7th in the bottom (ex. bottom to top: 3-5-7-9 or 7-9-3-5) ... the 5 or 9 are altered a lot of the time, or I'm playing 13 (6) instead of 5.
Sometimes on F7 I'm playing 7-3-13-1 - this sounds really good on the organ. Another voicing that sounds fantastic that Jimmy used to play a lot is 3-7-#9-5 (especially in F, with C top) but I can't reach that one very well, my hands are too small. :( try it!

Hi Vanessa, Great video! My favorite part is the comping chords you are using with your right hand on the lower manual from 2:42 to 3:34. The voicings, inversions, substitutions, and extensions are incredible. I'm going to pick off each one of those chords. I can walk bass pretty well with my left hand while comping with some generic voicings with the right, but you've got it going on! Your chord selection brings so much to the party, so to speak. You really swing, woman! Great job! Thanks, Johnny B.

Olá Leo, tudo bem? Yes crosstalk is one of the great things about the Hammond sound ... it's all of the imperfections that made it so great, and also what makes it so difficult to replicate - consequently the majority of 'clonewheel' keyboards just don't cut it.

I'm actually a guitarist - I've just bought an Electro Harmonix B9 effects pedal (there are demonstration videos of it here on TH-cam), which gives a fair representation of an organ (nine different tones, some useful, some not so). It's a good effect, but to make it sound more authentic it needs the right chord voicings, so the middle of your video, where you;re doing right hand chords, is really useful - I haven;t found any other video showing the chords and timings of them clearly.

I'm making no headway w/ Google plus, but I am getting the riffs and chord voicings from the upload. Love the way you walk the bass barefooted.

I transcribed the first two sets of 12 bars of this so that I could figure out what you are doing. Now it's practice practice practice. I have noticed that once the pattern starts to become automatic, I'm able to hear (in my head) little variations and am sometimes able to play that variation as I hear it in my head. I guess that means I just need to keep playing more. Wish you were in the states, and I would come see you perform. My daughter married a Brazilian from Campinas, so maybe someday I'll get there and can hear you. Don't worry about a "good setup" for your tutorials. Yes, that would be best, but even your most basic videos are helpful. Obrigado!

It would be great to have more videos with sheet music like this. I learned this pretty well (for me) because I could see it on the sheet music. I would not have learned it any other way, like with just video or audio alone. The second song is challenging though... I've played it 10,000 times and still mess up. I'll get it one day. Regardless, your video and sheet music made me be able to play the walking left hand bass and right hand like I never could before. Thank you, Venessa!

Hi Bill, thank you so much for your comment. Like I have mentioned in a few responses, I'm currently in a situation where I don't have access to a real Hammond organ ... as soon as I can get onto a real instrument again, I'll resume making these, complete with sheet music :) I'm glad you found this one helpful. Cheers!

Hi there, thank you for your feedback. This video wasn't intended to show exactly how to improvise exact lines over F blues, but more an overview of how to set up the instrument so it will sound good in a jazz setting using F blues as a medium to demonstrate this. However, my next Hammond organ video will explore more specific comping and soloing material ... thanks again!
    cheers

Hi Vanessa - I know it's not really in the genre of music you are highlighting, but sometime in the future could you do a lesson on how George Harrison did the intro to Blue Jay Way off the Magical Mystery Tour album. He did it on a Hammond s-6 organ apparently. The whole song has a really eeerie feel to it. No-one on You Tube has covered it yet. Could be a first!!! Thanks for your ealier reply. Love your playing!!!

Loved it ...A female jimmy smith ...is there a numeric pattern to the bass line ?? IE ...like 1 4 5 ...I'm watching the bass line and trying to associate the appropriate right hand chord(s) ....I cannot get enough of this ...fantastic !!...Curious ...ever hear Richard Grooove Holmes ? Another Hammond great !..Thank you for your great music !!

    • @vrodriguesmusic
      @vrodriguesmusic  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Rich! Hm … not so much a numeric pattern, but more like a language. The melodic language of bass lines. As I mentioned in the video I would recommend transcribing Paul Chambers, Sam Jones, Ray Brown playing over the blues to understand how the lines fit with the harmony.
      And yes, LOVE Groove Holmes!!!
      Thanks again - enjoy!!

Thanks so much! Ah yes a classic problem. I basically just recorded this with a portable zoom recorder, I'd have had to mic the lower speaker of the leslie for the bass to come out better ... though I do find I can hear it a bit better listening to this video with large headphones, see if that helps ...

Hi there! Thanks so much for your note. I do still play organ, I just don't have regular access to a real Hammond organ here in Rio so it's hard for me to make Hammond organ videos … whenever I play trio shows with Ricardo we rent one. Thanks so much for your suggestion. I will be sure to make another organ-improvisation themed video very soon (even if I have to demonstrate it on the Nord, the concepts can be applied directly to a real organ).
